.41 Mag Association

Well, I did a "thing" tonight. Shows what happens when you turn some folks loose on an online auction site! The seller is just a few miles from me, though, so that's my excuse. No shipping fees.....
It's a model 58 no-dash, somewhat of a grail gun for me to go with my 57's, 657, Redhawk and Blackhawks. Now only to find that ever elusive Marlin 1894S!!

Got to the range today for a second session with the Model 57. Earlier in the week I ran some test loads with AA#9 under MBC 215-grain LSWCs and wasn't thrilled with the results. Today was 2400's turn and I was much happier. 15.3 grains seems to be the ticket, 1.5" group at 25 yards. I'll try another dozen with that recipe and if it repeats that will be my hunting load. Next I'll try a ladder with Unique to come up with a target load.

I used a similar load of 2400 with reasonable results. Then, during the pandemic, I ran out of 2400 and couldn't get any.
So tried LongShot, 10 grains with the 215 gr yields approx 1200 fps from a 6.5" Ruger with good accuracy.

I've never had good luck with 2400... I don't know why. I actually wanted to like it... I'm an old Hercules fan for pistol powders... but I could never get it to shoot well in the .41 pistols. W296 is my go-to powder for full Magnum handloads, although I've been known to use IMR4227 as well. It's very hard to beat the 210grn XTP over W296...

I have a dozen 210-grain XTPs (thanks again, @blackd24 !) that I'll load with H110 just out of curiosity, but if I can find accuracy for targets and hunting with the same cast bullet I think I'll opt for the added simplicity.

FYI if you want something that shoots more like a .41 Special this might do it. I bought several boxes of this a while ago but have not had a chance to try it out, but at 510 fps i would think is should be soft shooting.
That's a little too soft-shooting for my tastes, but thanks for the info.

Yep, well if it works out to shoot like a .41 Special it will also have the advantage of not fouling the chamber for the .41 Magnums since it aleady is in a .41 Magnum case. But you handloaders have big advantage. Handload is just not something that is going to work for me at this time and situation in life, but perhaps someday.

I bought this one in 1966 NIB with a box of shells for $81.00. I was a LEO and stopped at the Gun Shop everyday just to warm up and visit.
I had expressed interest in the Model 58 and I am sure the LGS obtained it with me in mind and sold it to me at his cost.

A Model 19 Combat Magnum retailed back then for $125.00.

The only available ammo at the time was the hunting load and that was brutal with PC magna grips. S&W Target grips cost $12.00 back then and that was too expensive for a brand new cop.
I destroyed the magnas for the hardware and made my one and only set of grips for the gun. I call them PC Targets.

I fired that box of factory ammo for the brass and never fired another factory round.
I hand-loaded my ammo to Elmer Keith's recommendations and they worked just fine.

I carried the gun as a LEO sidearm for 13 years. I drew and dry fired it 10 times everyday before going on duty and it shows.

We were in a couple of serious social encounters and the 41 magnum cartridge did what it was designed to do. We got to go home at the end of the shift.
I can thank for an afternoon of shooting with Bill Jordan for fast draw and hip shooting for my survival in those two incidents.

A 1970 Ford Bronco came through a wreck scene, hit another car and I managed to jump on the hood and roll off the side rather go under it.

I fired a round which we later recovered after another Patrolman caught the guy.
My 210 grain JHP round had gone through the tail gate, the back of the front seat and lodged in the radio in the dash.

I dug it out and made a tie tack out of it and still wear it when I'm forced to dress up.

I still have that Military & Police 41 Magnum, and it will go to my Son when I go toes up.

That is exactly how I feel about having to get dressed up. Something to avoid as much as possible. I don't even wear a tie (noose) to church.

The rest of your post is remarkable and sure glad you knew how to roll with the punches, especially that Bronco punch.

Awesome tie tack!

Finally got to bring home the model 58 a couple of days ago. Pretty stoked to finally have one of these to compliment my model 57's, 657 and Blackhawks.

That’s a beauty, I would be proud to own that one. Is it an S serial gun? It has diamond magnas, but those sharp shoulder stocks are late 1940’s early 1950’s and not the unique PC Magnas that would have shipped on a Model 58. You should pull the grips and see if right panel has a serial number stamped on it.

Yes sir, it's an "S" serial and it shipped in Jan/'66. It came with newer (non-diamond) Magnas installed, and while I didn't have any PC Magnas to put on it there were a couple pair of regular Diamond Magnas stashed away in my grip box. So no, while it's not quite fully original it looks much better than it did with the newer grips. Hopefully someday I'll run across some PC Magnas but I'm not holding my breath.
