.41 Mag Association

I just stumbled on to this thread and thought I'd jump in. My .41 is a stainless Ruger Redhawk with a 5 1/2" bbl. I put a Hogue Mono grip on it and just yesterday put on a set of Williams Fire sights. I'm hoping these sights will help these aging eyes see them better.

I have one nice 41 but I'm thinking about passing it on to someone else. I've never even fired it yet since I don't want to get sucked into reloading for yet another caliber. It's a well built custom based on a 1917 frame with a model 58 cylinder and barrel.

I have lately acquired a used S&W Model 657 in .41 Mag with 8 3/8" barrel. I have other calibers to satisfy needs of shorter barrel length. I wanted a hunting and accuracy gun and one to carry a scope.

Yeah, I blew $500+ in new reloading supplies and equipment for another caliber. The ammo is pricey or can be, and the bullets and brass are scarce. I did find or realistically backorder everything on my list, except I now am working on the shoulder holster (to include a scope).

My 657 8 3/8" did not arrive and is two days overdue. The PO is tracing it. We'll see if it shows up on the first day after holidays. I hate it when guns are shipped postal. The pros are UPS.

So I now have all the reloading supplies, the lead bullet molds, the gas checks, the initial defensive/hunting ammo supply, the speed strips, two speed loaders with a double case, a scope, and a very expensive holster on the way. The gun is lost in the mail, so it's all pretty depressing. The challenge is finding someone who thinks it's their job to look for it. It was insured, but the gun is too rare for me to be cavalier about a replacement.

I am told that insurance over $200 requires change of custody signature along the way, so they should be able to tell who is accountable (had it last). Grrr!

My gun (Model 657 8 3/8") showed up today. Apparently the official investigation initiated yesterday shook it loose from the postal system.

Nice gun. Has a square butt grip frame, so I now know what to order in a Pachmayr, covered backstrap grip.

Picture as received, before grip change to Pachmayr and scope installation.

1987 Smith & Wesson model 657 8 3/8 barrel. Can't do better until I get the gun back from the gunsmith.

Gun show find

On Friday I managed to leave my office in time to be one of the first thru the door at a nearby gun show. About 10 minutes in I spotted a Marlin lever and did a double and then triple take, the tag said .41 magnum. The owner said go ahead and pick-up the gun and asked me if I knew what I was actually holding. It's all I could do to contain my excitement. The rifle was the Cowboy Carbine version with octagon barrel. The guy selling the gun said it had been his personal rifle and he was selling it because he rarely shot it and his wife was trying to get him to trim down his collection. Bottom line? The gun was 95% plus, had gorgeous wood and ended up leaving with me for $575.00.

In 25 years I'd never seen a .41 Marlin for sale at a show or dealer. Yes, I am one happy "cowboy" today.
