.41 Mag Association

Why did the guy bother putting the gun on the table with a price tag if he wasn't interested in selling?

No Sale??

Well I've put a gun on a table a time or two...that I really didn't want to sell. What is called eye candy. I have a pair of 29-3 44 mags in 3 inch round butt. Kinda hard to find and I put them on the table this spring. Sure drew attention. I didn't put a high nuff price on 'em. After I removed 'em from the table had 3 people who offered me full price(1200) for one. Only thing I wanted to do was generate interest in my stuff....but primers and lots of pistol powders sold well anyway. BTW...I had a LH 657. it shot fine but I really don't like stainless guns all that much..so sold it

I had the impression he really was trying to sell it. The more we talked about 41's, and how well the Lou Horton shot and handled, he had second thoughts about selling.

I sold a 3" 657. It just wasn't "fun" to shoot. I eventually replaced it with the 57 No Dash I have now. Plus I have my .41 Redhawk, so except for the fact I would like a 58, I'm good.

Ruger Redhawk with a 7 1/2" barrel. My favorite load is 240 gr Carbon HC. Got to messing with it one day at the range and the RSO set up a pie plate at 100 yds. I was able to hit it consistently after making the adjustment off the first shot with iron sights. I can't see the irons as well as I used to.

I didn't read the 30+pages of this thread so I don't know if anyone mentioned this. Watch out for Colt Pythons in .41 mag. They are Bubba Specials.

Ky Larry

I'd have some doubts that a Python frame could handle a full house .41 Mag.
I think Colt tried & abandoned the idea?

Now the S&W Mod. 58 is a sweet gun!

Been too long since any bullet photos.
Have been playing with these in FA 97 recently.
Building a load for western cougar trip.
Anyone else using CEB's?

Wow, I wonder what the velocity on those are?

Frank V- at 36K pressure they get mid 1800's from 7.5" barrel.
Almost scary (but you have to smile even still) what they'll do from 18" rifle.
I shoulda made a picture showing just the bullets themselves...these are not sold as loaded rounds.

Davidsons came through with another of their .41 Magnum exclusives. This time it is a stainless steel Ruger Redhawk with a 4.2 inch barrel.
Here it is on the right in the photos with its 7.5" and 5.5" siblings.
I swapped out the Hogue Bantam grips for a set of Nills.

Dang that's purty! I only have one Redhawk in .41 Mag. I bet they sell a bunch of those 4.2" .41 Redhawks.

The .41mag. is a nice cartridge in most any platform.
They can get too big & heavy, but it's still a nice ctg.
Thanks for sharing everyone, I was beginning to think this thread was dead?

nice looking grips on it too. I just found a pair of diamond N frame Magna grips at a local gun show. Like new..gonna try 'em on my old S serialed 57. Got 3 sets of grips for 10 bucks each. 2 diamond magna and a later 70s K frame . I done good for a change

Hopefully this thread will never die, there is just to much good info that has been contributed by everyone. Here is a nice place for any one looking for some affordable replacement stocks for those factory cheese graters. I got some rose wood stocks and they are much better than the skinny factory torture devices.

It also takes the guess work out of the equation of whether or not they will work with the grip frames that have the internal lock.

With the FBI and other law enforcement agencies heading back to 9mm, is the .41 MAG really relevant today for self defense?

.41 Magnum relevant?

Relevant to what?

Relevant to the hobby shooter who doesn't feel like crawling around on the ground to recover auto-pistol brass?

I'd say its very relevant.

I doubt many animate things shot with a .41 magnum ever needed to be shot a second time.
So, "capacity" arguments are a non-starter.

I want a NEW Marlin 1894 in .41 magnum in the worst way.
Gunborker prices for older guns are not even worthy of a look unless you want to be made angry.

I have a .44 magnum.
Don't want another one.

I have two .41 magnums.
Want more.

Just because.

W.E.G. - " ... I'd say its very relevant.

I agree. For example, several years ago two of my buddies and I drew bull elk tags in Idaho's Pashimeroi River Valley area. We were camped waaaaay back up in the mountains. My around-camp revolver was my S&W 57, 6". One of my buddies had a S&W 57 4" revolver. (The other carried a Ruger .45 Colt.) We were camped in Black bear, Mountain lion, and wolf country.

One morning my buddy with the 4" 57 went to the creek to get a couple buckets of water. As he was sitting on a log behind some willow bushes waiting for the buckets to fill, down the creek about 45 or 50 yards, out stepped a five point bull elk who began watering. My buddy slowly pulled out his .41 Magnum, aimed across the log and fired one round into the bull's lungs. The bullet passed completely through and the bull took a couple of steps and fell. He'd filled his tag and "made meat" with the .41 Magnum.

He was using some 215 or 220 grains hard cast SWC, but I do not remember his powder load. Probably H110 or WW296.

I knew a man in Calif. who had killed two nice Black bears with his .41 Mag. I know other .41 Mag. users who've killed quite a few large game animals, also. I've killed a deer and several coyotes with my 57 and 1894S Marlin .41 Magnum.

In a pinch, a .41 Magnum will do just fine. :D

This belongs as a separate thread. Deserves it anyway. It'll be buried in here.

First off...what do you mean as relevant?

Second, I'll be so bold as to say that for those relative few shooters that have used and still do, the 41 Mag as their main carry and self defense piece, the 9mm never called to them to begin with. So what goofy mess the FBI does makes no difference. Will those who choose the .41 mag for self defense make the switch to semis in 9mm because the FBI returned to the 9mm?

The FBI went from the 38 Special +P+ to the 9mm, to the 10mm, to the 40 S&W and now back to the 9mm. All since 1985. (The 40 S&W, since 85' lasted the longest and had the best run.) How is any of that relevant to me as an individual shooter and not an agency?

The 41 Mag has not ever been used by most general shooters for self defense at any time. Only a few agencies ever used it. It's always been a niche cartridge. For those who use it as a primary for self defense they have already made two "oddball" choices: They chose a revolver and they chose the .41 Mag.

For those who use it in the wild places for defense against wild critters and wild people, well the 9mm is not on the table in that discussion. That discussion usually begins with the 357 Magnum and 10mm and goes up from there.

41 Relevant?

Any other caliber other than the 9mm is relevant as long as it is larger and more powerful. The 41 mag I currently carry was used to dispatch a fairly irate grizzly. It was chewing on the shooters arm when he shot it. Sounds relevant to me. Happened many moons ago. Hopefully I never have to use it in the same manner...for either 2 legged or 4 legged predators...But I'll still carry it..JIC. Hate to say it..but if I really need it...I doubt the FBI will be around to help me with their relevant calibered firearm.
