Starting a new thread to not bogart the .358 Ocelot one. I'll let Sam1911's quote start it off:

Actually, I am curious about the 9x39mm. In looking around the 'web I've not been able to find out whether the Soviets blew the case out to .356" like the western style of 9mm, or up to the .365" diameter of the 9x18 makarov round.

One is technically smaller than a .358, and one is slightly larger, obviously.

I am also curious about the 9x39. Seems like it would be a neat answer to a lot of questions.

Small Arms Review (which I no longer subscribe to or read... longer and different story there) had an article in the December 2009 issue about two of the rifles chambered in 9x39. Quite a bit of information about the round itself is included, although not a detailed drawing.

To answer questions posed above:

From a clear photograph of several rounds next to a 7.62x39, it appears to have less taper although it still has some.

From a disassembled SP-6 AP round, bullet diameter was given as .363 inches and weight 245 grains. Charge weight was 9.3 grains of an unidentified powder. From the non-suppressed rifle velocity was ~961 fps and 924 fps from the suppressed.

The bullet is obviously not 9mm Mak diameter, but with a little fudging (say an undersized round and/or some uncalibrated calipers) I can easily get to .366 inches, that is to say standard diameter for 9.3mm rifles.

I say this cartridge looks interesting. Anyone have more information or some experience with it?
