I understand the AK74 drums are converted AK47 drums, but why is there such a MASSIVE price gap between the two? Do they really put roughly $100 worth of work into them to convert them?

Simple supply v demand economics.
Not many people do the conversion, therefore they can charge more for parts/labor.
It's interesting to note that due to the unreliability, weight and noise of the drum magazines, the Soviets opted to forgo producing drum magazines for the RPK-74 and issued 45 round & 30 round magazines for it. The Soviets did experiment with a polymer 100 round drum magazine, but opted not to produce it. Years later, the Russians developed a 60 round quad stack magazine for the RPK-74M/AK-74M.

Krebs Custom & a few other people convert 7.62x39 drum mags into 5.45x39 drums.

The 45 round mags are pricey too. You can get 30 rounders for $13 and the 45 rounder jumps up to $65. I just ordered 4 of the 30 mags for less than that including shipping.
