Bad / worst firearms advice?

Being new to the hobby I was checked out as many gun shops in my area as I could find. I think the worst advice I got was when the guy behind the counter told my anything under a 45 is for women, kids and people over 75. I laughed a little and he looked at me straight faced and told me he wasn't kidding. I asked to see a .22 and he wouldn't let me see it and keeped talking about 45s. Needless to say I won't be spending any money there.

I stood and listened to a clerk at Dick's sporting goods explain to a shooter(who was new to handguns) how you will likely be prosecuted if you don't use "personal protection/self defense" labeled ammo in a self defense shooting.
Said that it was just the opposite of the geneva convention he was required to follow while in the military. You couldn't claim it was a justifiable shooting if you didn't use "the most deadly ammo available", and therefore could be put in jail for using "target/range" labeled ammo. Went into detail about how in the military you had to avoid undue suffering and excessive wounding, while in civilian life you were required to kill.
He then proceeded to try and sell the poor guy a box of .40S&W for his 9mm, at which point I felt compelled to step in and at least get the guy the right caliber :banghead:

"It's safe to carry the SIG Sauer P-220 .45acp with the hammer cocked back."

Err, well, it is. There are two safeties at work inside the gun that would prevent any accidental firing until the trigger is depressed fully to the rear.

I had gone into a gander Mountain in Mentor, OH one time just to browse back in '04, IIRC. I had heard of good reports of the CZ452s up to then and noticed one on the shelf and asked to examine it (a .22 lr 452 American). It was the first American I had examined and read a few posts about a limited run with a Varmint action in an American stock or an Amercian action in a Varmint stock, couldn't remember. Asked about it and the clerk wasn't too sure but he did tout the CZ stating (paraphrase), 'The trigger is as good as an Anschütz's.' Already having a 54.18 MSR, I just smiled and said, "That's a pretty steep claim."

(I didn't pick it up at the time as it was my lunch hour but eventually got a few CZ452s and 453s a couple years later. And no, the triggers are NOT as good as an Anschütz's, not even the 453's. But, the rest of the gun more than makes up for that shortcoming.

Just heard this a few minutes ago when the MP(army) pistol instructor was walking by, He told another Mp that accuracey in pistol shooting is all in the wrist, the grip does not matter...............and we count of people like that to defend the country?

Forgot about this one...

I was at Dick's and asked if they had any 7.62x39 for my SKS. The guy behind the counter said that was a military caliber so they don't sell it. I ALMOST informed him that .223, .308, .30-06, 9mm, .45, 12g, etc are also are/were military calibers. I keep my mouth closed more than I should .

From Future Weapons:

The new open bolt (on some new M4 type weapon) will have less chance of getting how. With an M4, because the bolt is closed, the barrel could get hot enough to cook off a round in the chamber.

I was once at the NRA range, and one of the folks at the desk had sold a guy a box of .380 for his pistol marked "7.65 Browning," because "that's what .380 goes by in Europe. Two people who should have known better, and if they didn't, they should've done some research. That kind of nonsense and false "knowledge" can get people killed.

You can shoot 7mm mauser in a 7mm mag guns as it has less pressure so you wil have no problems. Heard that at a walmart when i was a mear 16 had to step in and say something about that before the pimply faced kid behind the counter got some one killed.

Heard this one while flying from Texas to California on leave and taking guns back home. "You can't carry them (Bolts out of my riles) because you coud put a bullet on them and make them fire and kill people on the plane." Though the same lady didn't have a problem with the 9" double edge knife in my carry on. This was 1998 I think so way before all this stupid 9/11 crap we have to deal with today.

From mythbusters "tracers are illegal"
From mythbusters ".50's are illegal"
From ATF "a shoestring is a MG"
From the range "you can't load an AR with a full mag when the bolt is closed"
From the range "Your S12 is a DD"

anything that anybody says that women can not shoot.

I've found that the ladies tend to outshoot the fellas. Then again, no one I've ever introduced to shooting has wanted to shoot my .45 and more than absolutely necessary. I could pay my tuition if I operated a .22 range with rentals near my school, though!

Overheard a couple of "thugs" at the range.

"hold the gun sideways cuz it's more accurate"

"What! what! men, dodging this way for single bullets! What will you do when they open fire along the whole line? I am ashamed of you. They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance."
-Union Major General John Sedgewick, last words before being shot in the head by a Confederate sharpshooter

The 9 vs 45 debate. The whole thing.
If you open carry you will get arrested, robbed, and most likely killed.
That there aren't lots of anti (s) on boards, pretending to be pro. This one is a real pain. They will throw every staw man argument out there, and then pretend they have made a point.

Well I preface this to say that my father is one of the smartest people I know, and I think because he is very smart and knowledgeable he thinks he is knowledgeable about firearms as well.

I remember being told that the M16 was inaccurate but devastating because the bullets came out the barrel and began to tumble.

I see nothing wrong with that statment, i say let thugs not know how to shoot
I second that and I raise you...how about we don't let thugs shoot at all.

Look at it this way, if you ever find yourself in the middle of a drive-by or a mugging.... just stand still, you'll be fine.

Not every "thug" has a criminal record so how are we going to go about that? Revoke second amendment rights from young, minority males?:neener:
