Bad / worst firearms advice?

I just helped my cousin purchase his first shotgun and I almost felt bad for the sales kid at the sprtsmans warehouse. We were looking at 870's as I know a little bit about them. What we're looking at is your standard rack of 870 expresses with remchokes

#1
Me " can we see that 870 there with the laminate stock"
Salesman"sorry sir we only have ones with wood stocks and plastic"

#2
Salesman "your gonna wanna get the 26" barrel if your going to shoot steel, and the 28" barrel if your gonna shoot lead."

#3
Salesman "your gonna have a tighter pattern with the 28" barrel"

#4 while looking at a combo unit, Me "this 20" barrel is a improved cylinder right?"
salesman "No I don't think that barrel has a choke, it's for shooting slugs" at which point he pointed the barrel at his face to look for a choke tube elmer fudd style.

And of course the classic pump shotgun line which is already in this thread.
#5 Salesman "Sh*t, any pump can be a HD gun. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS RACK THE SLIDE AND THE CRIMINAL WILL RUN AWAY. It's the universal language"

man I hate that one

The price is the price, take it or leave it.

I just had this one again...retail of course:

Clerk - "I can't move on the price"

Me - "Sure you can"

Clerk - "No, really, that's the best offer I can make...that's about what we paid for that rifle!"

Me - "No it isn't. I know exactly how much this store paid for it and I support you making a profit, but you can't gouge me. Let's come up with a price we both feel is fair."

The kid was stunned - he must have forgotten the inventory sheet he'd just shown me to check on stock also listed retail and that dealer's prices :D

I had a college football coach teaching first aid who told the class that a rifle bullet was more dangerous at 100 yards than it was up close because it had not had time to achieve its full velocity.

I heard a California Highway Patrol officer (as a guest on a radio show) warn people not to fire their guns in the air on New Year's; he then went on to explain that firing a bullet up in the air is actually the most dangerous, because when the bullet falls back to earth, it's coming down even faster because of gravity.

Someone needs to tell that feller that terminal velocity ain't just a video game

Salesman, to a young, woman " This lightweight Smith and Wesson has the Crimson Trace laser sight on it. This is a GOOD Intimidation device, Once the BG see's the laser they will run away".
I don't recall at any time in life, that I've been taught to intimidate someone with a handgun.
Granted that laser could scare a BG and make him run away. But I don't think it's wise to tell someone this is a good way to intimidate someone. That could get you killed.
If I have to pull my pistol, it's with the intent to shoot. If the BG runs away Great!
Nobody gets hurt. But I'm not going to pull my gun, and hope the mere sight, and or waving a laser around on them will make them stop.

".380 is better than 9x19, because you can carry more rounds."
"Hitting a pistol is the best way to un-jam it."
"Cycling a shotgun will scare a bad guy away."

"firing a bullet up in the air is actually the most dangerous, because when the bullet falls back to earth, it's coming down even faster because of gravity."

Yeah, especially seeing how even free falling above the stratosphere doesn't reach the speed of sound as measured at sea level...

243 is too small for Texas Whitetail.

9mm is too small for SD/HD.

Autloaders are not accurate.

Michel Savage (talk radio) says he would never leave a round in the chamber of a semi. He said he doesnt trust the "spring" and is afraid it will go off. This was said on the radio. He is however pro gun just needs educating.

Also the whole racking a pump will save ya.

Falling bullets will kill ya. I still dont buy that one. Remember back in the first desert storm and all that AA fire going up from Bagdad? If the theory was true, the fallin AA bullets should have kilt thousands right?

No need to look, I already checked the chamber.

Yeah, I hate that one.

It seems I mostly hear it from inexperienced folks, but every now and again some misinformed gun store employee will look offended and say "hey, I just checked that" or "I told you it was unloaded".

Yeah, as if I care. I think I'll see for myself!

worst thing ive ever heard was on a hunting show on man network. show is call pennsylvania backwoods. guy on the show made comment that in snow covered ground you never look for whole deer, you just look for ear or leg. i found this a stupid comment for anyone who's ever hunting in amish community. those folks go hunting in brown pants and sometimes throw a tiny orange vest that doesnt meet the 180 degree standard, thankfully ive taught my kids better.

so far i've lost count of the bad advice given by gun store clerks...

man, if car salesman gave advice this bad they woulda be out of buisiness in a month. or in a lawsuit...

the kid who works at Mcdonalds gets some training on his job, why dosent the dude behind the counter at gun stores?

the worst one ive heard is the .308 and .30-06 can be interchanged.
i think they tested that on guns&ammo tv, it wasnt pretty...

"9mm is inadequate" - thegoodfight

Yep, I got this one over the weekend. A friend of mine who's wife loves shooting a Glock 17, but he's convinced the 9mm just won't work for self defense.

We'll see who wins that argument :D
