I just returned from a visit to my neighborhood Wal-Mart and noticed that the shelf normally full of .40 S&W ammo was completely bare. I guess this is in reaction to the announcement of the IQC (Indefinite Quantity Contact) for 450,000,000 rounds of .40 S&W.

I'm really glad I reload .40 S&W.

Steve

One by me is fine. Threads like this just spur people on to buy more than usual.

Actually the 2 WalMarts near me are pretty much out also. I heard on the radio last week that the Dept. of Homeland Security has or will be buying 450 million rounds of pistol ammo. Actually they have been buying tons of it for about 5 years now from what I understand.

It is going to atke about that long just to make that order complete - in the meantime ATK will motor along, but 40 might be tight from them as they make all of their other cartridges

I love it when people read things, get what they think is the main point of it, and fail to read further.
It was a contract over the course of several years and is UP TO, not a bulk 450 million rounds.

This is how panic buys start.

Too late, thats been going on for months already, wait till around july/august when things really begin to heat up.

This is how panic buys start.
yep

people panic, then they buy, then they panic some other gomer into a panic buy

If the last shortage didn't teach you to keep stocked up, panic buying from WallyWorld now won't solve your problems. Perhaps a massive bulk order online/catalog could catch you up, but the local department store? Not set up for "stocking up all at once", notice how a minor panic in one caliber has dried up some shelves.

I've been gradually increasing my supplies and diversifying ever since the last shortage started winding down, and choosing which cartridges to stock in mass quantities (most of them, although I didn't feel much of a need to amass a pile of 30-30 and .32acp).
If I had the room and the free time, I'd reload ... but as it is reloading would eat my shooting (or some other hobby) time up with a task.

At this point, I've been buying 3 and shooting 1 for so long I could make a throne out of .22lr bulk packs and another out of combined centerfire, or a couple nice footrests, one rifle and one pistol. Another shortage will mean I shoot less centerfire and less "social work" ammo at water jugs.

Walmart back in town had a good supply of 40s&w while I was there today. I'm just glad I reload 40s&w myself.

I was at a walmart over here in MN, and it looked normal. Even more ammo than last time I was in. But they still have those value pack of 12ga for $19.95, they upped the price to $22.95 over here. Any they don't have the Federal 9mm 100rd packs either. Gotta stock up a few of each every time I drive down to the cities for the good prices.

i just pick up an extra thousand primers here and there

I was in the local Turner's last week & they had primers @ $36/1K. Not too bad. Not my favorite brand tho. LGS has some coming soon & plan on buying those. Other than LPP I'm pretty much set for a year or so. Actually, I could probably not load another round of .45ACP & be set for a year or more. ;)

WalMart in northern Oklahoma still fully stocked with ammo and reloading components as of yesterday.

No panic.

That contract to buy ammo over the next five or so ears is old news. The Wally World here is stocked pretty well. Sales are good, but plenty of ammo on the shelves.

WalMarts carries reloading components?
not around here they don't...

the other thing that gets me about the DHS contract.. that's going to be ammo built to their specs...
It's not like they're gonna buy up every round of .40S&W they can get their hands on...

When the government contracts for items such as ammo, gasoline etc they use a contracting vehicle/process referred to as Indefinite Quantity/Indefinite Delivery. Basically they tell the perspective vendor the they want to purchase X number of widgets over the next five or ten years delivered in quantities of X. The details of the contract will specify how much of the products is to be delivered and where and when. Contracts are done this way to eliminate the need to negotiate with a vendor every year.

Bare shelves at Wally-world are nothing unusual. They buy a bunch of something and when they run out they're out until someone reorders, weeks, maybe months later. It could, and does, happen with any item in any department. I've come to expect that when shopping there and, being in the procurement business, I think WM does a pixx-poor job of stock management.
OR, they could have made the decison at store level to not carry that item any longer for various reasons.

I do not believe an empty slot on a WM shelf is a reliable indication of any shortage.
NOw,if every LGS in the area is out also, that could be something to think about.

Yep, my WalMart has mostly RCBS products/tools, Hornady bullets of numerous sizes/shapes, a half dozen powder types in 1# containers, CCI and Winchester primers, and a half dozen bags of new brass for sale.
