The dealer is not full of *crap*.

Police officers, most definitely the ones in LAPD can run a person's name and date of birth, and that is plenty of information to get the pistols/handguns the person has bought or sold, as well as the serial numbers of each one. There would be a header in front of each gun that tells the disposition of the gun as well.

This is the way it is in California, since I used to work for the LAPD. Heck, before it was available through the terminal in every LAPD squad car, I had LAPD officers calling me via their cellphone or via a payphone asking me to run such-and-such a name with a certain DOB and to save the printout or read them the serial number of the guns found in the hit.

The LAPD officers used to ask for me by name (to run QG queries) because I knew my gun makes and models and they could describe the various logos and stampmarks on the guns to me over the phone. At one point, I had LAPD officers calling me from other neighboring divisions to do the same. :what:

the law says that dealers have to retain their 4473s which are subject to inspection or collection at any time
Is it also for any reason? I guess what I'm asking is do they even have to have a warrant or can they just walk in to any gunshop and take every single 4473 just because?

I'm not an FFL 01 holder, not even an FFL 03 holder, so hopefully an FFL 01 can weigh in on this, but here's my take on how things work.

The BATFE can't -take- the 4473's, but they can look at them and copy the info down. Upon closing of a shop the FFL has to turn over all the 4473's though to the BATFE. I don't imagine it takes a warrant to run an inspection on an FFL holder though to get eyes on the 4473's... but I could be wrong. Given the BATFE's mode of operation I HIGHLY doubt it. Remember, until Bush II got into office the BATFE was part of the Treasury department and NOT part of the Justice deparment like it is now. They're tax collectors, or at least they were. They haven't operated like tax collectors in a long time though.

We'll never know what goes on behind closed doors in West byGawd Virginny, now will we? I mean, there's only so much data that 90 people can input per shift/day, right? Are ALL traces used only for crime guns? Or did I mis-read something somewhere about X thousands number of ATF traces proving some Brady Bunch point, where people cried out, "But they're not ALL crime guns!"

Gee Wally, who really cares?
I dunno Beave, but if Mom and Dad find out... you're gonna be in a lot of hot water :D
"No such rule or regulation prescribed after the date of the enactment of the Firearms Owners' Protection Act may require that records required to be maintained under this chapter or any portion of the contents of such records, be recorded at or transferred to a facility owned, managed, or controlled by the United States or any State or any political subdivision thereof, nor that any system of registration of firearms, firearms owners, or firearms transactions or dispositions be established." Firearms Owners' Protection Act, signed into law in 1986, 18 U.S.C. 926
I guess Clark County Nevada kinda missed this one, huh?

No way can they know what firearms I own. All private sales. Even with my Concealed permit no firearm was registered. Now if you buy one and fill out the forms -----I'm not sure.

Baba Louie,

I mean, there's only so much data that 90 people can input per shift/day, right? Are ALL traces used only for crime guns?

I have worked for FFL's for ten years.

In that time, I have recieved three (Count 'em: "3") calls for traces from the BATF.

I can assure you that in those ten years we sold significantly more than three guns.

I'll leave you to do the math. :)

It can't happen in Indiana either. No weapon or permit information is available through IDACS.

They'd have to raid the FFL boxes to know what guns I own.

Twenty years ago I called in an incident and requested the PD hustle or I would deal with it. When the dispatcher called units out they mentioned there were firearms at my residence. They came quickly and I was not contacted.
