Can someone help out a writer who's clueless about guns?

Hi jp,

Great idea! I didn't take time to real all the posts but some were pretty interesting. Hopefully I'm not about to regurgitate something that's been said already.

Of course the real world issue here would be human nerve impulse speed, or nerve conduction velocity compared to rifle or pistol bullet velocity and distance traveled. So you could cook up a real world solution to it, as nearly every good lie, and absolutely every great fiction, has many elements of truth.

Nerve conduction velocity in normal humans runs from about 3 to 390 feet per second. The important signals, "your finger is being burnt, move it" are the fastest types. The fastest conducting fibers have the fatty substance myelin for insulation, providing up to 20 times increase of electrical signal speeds. In the disease ms, most people know the myelin insulation around the axons breaks down so the nerves can no longer efficiently carry the electrical signals. What they don't know is a properly engineered virus could be used to go in and splice the genes that make the myelin with new genetic code for a super insulator 2000 times faster instead of the normal 20. That would take the nerve impulses from the normal max velocity of 390 fps to 780,000 fps, over 250 times faster than a high speed rifle bullet. Drugs would actually be required to slow heartbeat and other processes down or they'd likely over-speed. Sex, unfortunately, might be out of the question. The hyperaxon individual would either need great restraint, or decide if the act would be good enough to die for. Everything else, senses, perception, muscle activity and thought process would be greatly enhanced.

When you get it figured out, sign me up for the program. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

God and country.

So while I was out gene-splicing my myelin, I started thinking about other parts of the human genome. Now that it has been completely sequenced, it's been reported that many researchers are not surprised by how different we humans are from other animals, but by how much genetic material we actually share. In fact, some well respected sources report just 2.5% of DNA differentiates a mouse from a man. Mice and men share about 97.5 per cent of their working DNA. Fascinating! There are many elements of truth on various subjects at genome.gov, The National Human Genome Research Institute. Here's a little backgrounder: http://www.genome.gov/10001345. Some of their research is classified. Wonder why? As a federal civilian with (some level of) clearance, all I can say is that with all the federal budget cuts, some of the programs there dodged a bullet.

So then, many animals, like pigeons, whales, fish, dogs and even monarch butterflies all are able to sense and align with the earth's and other magnetic fields for various purposes, mainly navigational but also detecting prey and predators. Humans share the genes for this. They just need to be identified and switched on. It's actually only a matter of time, if they haven't done it already.

Once my myelin is up to speed and I'm able to sense and align with the earth's and other electro-magnetic fields, like from power lines, I'll also be able to detect disturbances within those fields. For navigation and other purposes. I'll be able to judge distance, speed and direction for navigation. Disturbances like those caused by a conductors (lead and/or copper or other metallic substance) moving through and disturbing those magnetic fields. Basic electro-magnetic theorey states that the faster those conductors move through those magnetic lines of force, the higher the voltage and consequent counter electro-motive force (EMF) generated. Disturbances like a bullet, rapidly spinning like a little generator, producing and inducing it's own precise field. Since those real world fields travel at the speed of light in a vacuum, I'll have all the time in the world to simply step aside.

Rather than enhancing the character's senses, per se, you could enhance his ability to read body language, letting him move just before the shot is fired. This would be similar to how a fighter reacts to the preparation to throw a punch by noticing a dipping shoulder or shift in body weight to avoid it. It could also be useful for profiling people similar to the abilities of the main character of Lie to Me (or the female lead, who does it more instinctively, actually). It's an ability that's actually within the realm of human capability, so easy enough to say that the drug helps him tap into it.

Well, somebody has to say it:

Phased Plasma rifle in 40 mega-watt range.
"Just what you see, pal."

Sorry I'm late to this thread. Evil population control officers of the future will carry Glocks because Glock will aggressively court their business to gain market share.

As one whose attempted to write myself. One thing I try to keep in mind is that you can go with 2 directions with for example a firearm in a story.

1. You can dig deep into it and take up a passion to learn the terminology, usage, and practical physics of whatever you are choosing to use - it will lend realism to your story and keep it believable.

- the downside is to avoid getting too technical in the description which is tempting because of your newfound knowledge - detracting from your story.

2. You can learn the basic knowledge of what it is, without going into extreme detail in it, and then tailor it's use as a more general description to add depth to a character without spending long hours learning a subject that may or may not further your ability to write the story. IE it may simply be a tool to your character and not a critical part of her interaction.

- the downside is a potential to misuse said object (if it's something your readers may be familiar with) and invoke negative responses.

Examples of both. Larry Corriea and Morgan Blayde both use firearms, and other weapons in their books and describe them in detail, as well as their usage - in both cases the kind of firearm and it's usage are central to the various arcs in the respective story.

Tolkien, on the other hand describes several swords and weapons and armor in his books, but the actual use, construction, and detail of them (other than their heritage and the level of craftsmanship) is largely vague as the storyline revolves more around the people and the events than the equipment. Armor and weapons are de-facto staples of life.

Both cases work well

This was a great thread for the first couple of pages!

To the OP-
1. Write what you know, and know what you write. Go to the library and internet and read! Don't let THR do your homework for you. However, this website can be a great start or part of a greater volume of research.

2. Don't worry too much about technical gun stuff. You should read the Simpsons comic where they took all the plot holes and continuity errors out of a Star Wars like space movie. The space ships did not explode, they just crumpled up and drifted off course and it took 12 years to fly from one planet to the other. The comic book guy loved it, but it was a crummy flick. Make it fun, engaging, and entertaining. Suspension of disbelief aloows you to bend the rules quite a bit.

3. Your heroine should carry an M-1 Garand, AND MAKE SURE YOU SAY CLIP AND NOT MAGAZINE!!

Good Luck.

"A huge majority of the Jews and others whose existence offended the Germans might dispute that. Except they didn't dispute anything, did they?"

Not sure the numbers would represent a significant majority(nor, for that matter, even a significant MINority),but the Nazis' combat experiences in the Warsaw ghetto would seem to make your second statement...well...OPEN to dispute? Additionally, Is suspect there were Jews among the ranks of the Polish, Czech, French, British, Belgian, Dutch and other forces who tried to stop them early on.
The Jews were actually heavily overrepresented in the Czechoslovak foreign army during the WW2.

They comprised 32% of Czechoslovak foreign army soldiers in UK,
35% in USSR,
50% at the Middle East/North Africa.

As it happens, the Czech Republic has shall issue concealed carry, and there are no gun free zones in the country apart from the courthouses (there you can leave gun with judicial guard upon entry).

So technically, a Czech Jew can relatively easily CC (gun test, clean criminal history, stamp from general practitioner) and can carry to synagogue. That is something Jews can forget about in most of US.

jp68112, why wouldn't they use a more effiecent weapon to cure overpopulation than small arms, say TLAM-N's or W82 free-fall nukes? If the systems are off line, OK, how about building 10 small devicesfrom a MIRV? Why risk your peoples' lives 'collecting' people, just to administer Lethal Injection? The premise makes no sense. What is the criteria for collection selection? And why wouldn't those not selected for death be recruited into said organization?

Au Contraire. Many do. Some of us Christians do, too.
