CCW as President of USA?

If I were running any country I would most certainly carry, actually more of a statement than anything else. Also I would be more than willing to make it a rotating thing amongst the US gun makers. One day carrying one gun the next something different.

That works great politically (which carrying would mainly be anyway), but would screw you up training-wise. Think about it, the president is one of the busiest men in the world, he doesn't have the time to familiarize himself with every handgun made in America. Just pick one and carry it. Sorry to rain on your parade.

Beat me to it.... Avoid the "gun of the month club".... Everything either has to have essentially the same controls, or be (or emulate) a revolver. The revolver and most TDA or DAO guns are essentially "point and pull the trigger" if you carry with the safety (if any) off, and most of them are safe to carry that way.

I switch between a couple 1911's, a TDA, and a "no buttons" DAO Tuppergun. Flipping the safety lever and not finding one is only a little disconcerting :)....

(For the lurkers: "TDA" is "Traditional Double Action", or what's otherwise called "DA/SA" - "Double Action on the first shot, Single Action on the rest".)

Regards,

What a pointless thread. I am sorry but I don't see the POTUS as a hypocrite because the Secret Service carry guns.

You do realize that they have a great deal of leeway in enforcing the security of the first family.

Did the original poster just start this thread to rally up some anti-Obama sentiment? It seems that way.

Oldskoolfan:

My comment about the SS carrying was directed against the current occupant of the White House's view that nobody but "he and other important people" should be permitted personal safety.

At the current rate of progress, his safety may be of greater importance to us than we may have considered - he may manage to alienate enough people in the Legislature to become a lame duck before he can do too much further damage. Talk about mucking with Social Security may do it....

However, that doesn't change the Rosie O'Donnell mindset: "You can't have guns, but my kids bodyguards can." :(

Probably is pointless, but it's also a clear definition of the "but not you" attitude we get from politicians like Fineswine....

Regards,

If I was president I would definitely carry, with several exceptions: ;)
I would carry into all the places I can't now: post offices, airlines, court houses, amusement parks:neener: ect... It would be like a "to do" list:).

I could be on the cover of the Glock yearly magazine.

I would also wear body armor everywhere but the shower and bed.

Well since the thread was started on March 22nd, 2004 (unless the timestamp has been altered - conspiracy?)would mean make the OP amazingly prescient. That was before Obama was even elected to the US Senate.

Yes this is a old Zombie thread. No time stamp adjusting foolery.

The thread originally was about what some past president's might have carried on their person as CCW pistols, (remember the Secret service wasn't around or wasn't very good for Teddy Roosevelt's Predecessor) and later was expanded to be "If you were President what would you CCW or have around."

I am not anti-Obama or anti-president or any nutty thing like that. Hoping he mellows out on Anti-firearms laws, socialism and other stupidity though. We should get Tom Selleck to talk to him at some event. (Hint hint NRA!!!)

If you want to look at weird coincidences involving Obama being elected to office in Illinois and then later President. Simply look up Jeri Ryan (yes the one from Star Trek Voyager) and her very, very stupid first husband and his Political career. She has a great singing voice too.

I highly doubt any Democrat carried (sorry personal feeelings)
but im sure that at least some have i wouldnt put it past any president that was a soldier
i cant say for sure but id bet my milk and cookies that Teddy Roosevelt carried

and if i were president id carry a big US made 1911 maybe even a pair with a BUG 38/357 snub at the ankle just because i could

Does that briefcase that can initiate a nuclear launch count as a CCW?

I haven't read this whole thread, but I can't imagine the Secret Service would allow him too, POTUS or not. He's The President, not The King or God. He's essentially the top employee of the US Government, not above the law by any means.

In a shooting situation, the SS agents swarm all over the POTUS, I seriously doubt they'd want him waving a piece around trying to get some of the bad guy too.

I actually met the guy that grabbed Reagan and threw him in the limo, then leaped in on top of him and broke his rib. Guy's name was Sully, he's working for a telecom manufacturer now and taught a class in our office. I looked up the shooting on YouTube, and sure enough, there he was.

Who needs it when you've got a team of highly trained secret service agents armed to the teeth? Unless he just likes to carry, IMHO unnecessary but im not against it.

Well, I'm not going to be elected president any time soon. But if I was, my first executive order would be that the 2A means what it says, and after signing, I'd buckle on a 1st gen Colt SAA in 45LC. With wood grips, and no engraving.

"My fellow Americans, it is time for us to take a hands-on approach to reducing crime..."

Then I'd go to the range and qualify with the SS staff.

The posts are off that talk about the Secret Service "not allowing" the President to carry. The Secret Service doesn't have that type of authority. As another poster mentioned, the Secret Service can urge, advise and highly recommend. However, the Secret Service does not have the authority to "not allow" the President to carry.

If it were up to the Secret Service, they'd have the President traveling around in a bomb proof shelter 24/7. Note that the Secret Service did not want President Obama to exit the tank/limo during the 2009 Inauguration Parade. Obama did anyway. The Secret Service had to adapt, and I'm sure the Secret Service was on pins and needles the whole time.

I wouldn't feel the need to CCW if I had my own personal security force like the Prez does. However, not all of us can afford such luxuries. Its much more affordable for serf's like me to buy a $500 Glock.

This is from the other side of the pond, but Winston Churchill is known to have carried a Colt .45 auto that he originally bought to take to France after being deposed as First Lord of the Admiralty in WW I. In WW II, he carried under his coat. The outline of the gun is obvious in a famous photo in which he was wearing a white suit to a meering in the Middle East.

"Man at Arms" did a feature on his handguns some years ago, and the present Lord Churchill allowed the writer to photograph his grandfather's pistols. Good story.

I'm sure that he was the last Prime Minister to go armed.

Were I president I'd go through procedure and have myself issued either an M14 or a Thompson. Public address? I'd lean it on the podium. I'd also guarantee that anyone legally qualified to own a gun would be issued one. God knows we've captured sufficient AKs by now to arm everyone who wants one.

When I was a child my class visited the boise airport. this was back in the '80s. we were all walked up on a thing that looked like an armored lectern with a slot in the angled face. When you looked through the slot, there was a semi-auto of some kind on a white background. We were told that the pistol was confiscated from President Regan when he tried to board a plane carrying it. I was also told the pistol was actually in the box. I can't say how much of what I was told was true, and how much was propaganda intended for children. Gosh we're bad about lying to children, or at least saying things that puzzle them long into adulthood...

If I was #1.gov I'd pump up the ability to teach master metal work, and with the tools I inspired the schools to buy, I'd take a trip one day and be like..

#1.gov has an idea for a beltfed 45ACP on a frame that feels and looks a lot like a 1911. I'd also make a very nice turret system for it, and keep it on my desk.

After my presidency, I'd sell that thing for millions...

I bet the SS would be very reluctant to let the President near a range. It would have to be cleared from all but SS personnel.

Unless there is a range buried in the bowels of the White House, which is something I've wondered about.

I think Camp David has a range, but it's pretty exclusive to President and guests only. Many Presidents have done skeet and trap shooting there. Safe enough for the secret service I'm sure. Forget public ranges though or Camp Perry events. That would be awesome to see a (past, present, or future) US President competing at Camp Perry but some shooters might feel weird competing against the President.

Also, I bet most of the posters here as President would have a lot of firearms stored at Camp David. Like Bert's rec room full of collectable firearms in the movie Tremors. The neighbors would not be too eager to vote for you after shooting a few thousand .50 cal rounds through a M2 Browning at targets all day. Heck I'd have a quad .50 turret there to shoot for fun and just in case. The secret service agents would love you if you let them all have a turn shooting a quad .50 at the range.

As far as foreign leaders go, some years ago Arrafat addressed the UN and when he raised his arms during a speach, a photog snapped a pic which clearly showed the bottom of a holster below the level of the raised jacket.

I'd REALLY like to see that pic!
