I'll shoot this match with my .308 Win on Sunday, or maybe tomorrow afternoon if the range is open. I'll shoot it in 15 minutes which will be good practice for an F-Class match.

The dots look huge on the screen! The centers are .5", total bull is 1"

I just printed out the target with scaling set to "none". The black circle is 1" (O.D.) but the inner circle is 9/16". With a .308" caliber bullet, a perfect score will require shooting inside .850" to be "safe". Doesn't sound quite so bad now does it. :D

Our local range is open tomorrow so I'll be out there giving this my best effort.

You are right, the center bull measures .565", but a perfect score(45-15X) with a .308, would require a perfectly centered .257" group:eek: A bit out of my league:D
Good luck to you guys!!

I haven't been on much lately, so I just noticed the match. Anywho count me in!

Is there any way we could set up a couple of different classes?...i'd like to try out the new front sight on the 1885 Highwall (though I don't know if i'll even be able to see those wee dots), but I don't think it'll compare to something...well something with a bullet diameter smaller than the bulls. :uhoh:

BTW, you know you are on the hook for hosting a recurring match EVERY SINGLE MONTH...right? :D

Here is my entry.

Not my best day for sure...haven't shot that gun in a long time and it shows.

Shot with my Cooper 21 in 223 Ackley with a handload (40 gr Blitzking over 28.1 H335 and a Fed Gold Medal Match primer). Standard front and rear bag...nothing fancy.

I was running out of light pretty quick too...I'm going to try it again when I have more time.

I also shot it with the 260 Rem but it was too embarrassing to post! Haven't shot that gun in a while either.

Here are my first two attempts shot this afternoon. I oriented the target with five circles in the horizontal direction and shot both targets in just under 15 minutes each which is good practice for F-Class matches. I even put a video camera out at the 100 yard line to film each string. I've looked at both targets carefully and feel that I've scored them accurately but feel free to challenge any of the targets. Heck, this is a very tough assignment and I'll readily admit that I struggled. I'm going to do this regularly from now on and feel that it will make me a better shooter. Thanks JDGray for getting this match going and for getting me to move out of my comfort zone. Did I mention that I struggled. I can't explain the miss on the first target but I missed by a mile!! It was windy today but I think it was my nerves or just poor technique.

esheato, I think you did better than you realized. Isn't your score 34-1X rather than 33-1X?

1858, I think you're right.

I'll always accept an extra point. ;)

34-1X.

It was quite challenging for me too.

1858,
Great job! This is a lot harder than I thought it would be, thats for sure. I also learned a bit about scoring targets, and give you more experianced target shooters the benifit of the doubt. I have a perfect edge shot that I scored 1pt on my target, but looks like it should have been scored a 3, but my score is so low, I'm not gonna sweat it:D I may get out with my Savage 10FP .308 today, if the rain holds off...... Sorry I said Savage 1858:fire: I'd like to see what that custom barreled rig will do when you get a base on it!! Hope it works out for you:)

esheato,
Added a point for you on my 3 person score list:)

24-0X
Heres todays attempt, I dug a nice couple of holes with my bipod in the soft ground under my shooting mat.....Wondered why I continually had to adjust my rear bag lower and lower. Shot with my 10FP, Leupold VXIII 8.5-25x50 set on 25, a balmy 40F with 20mph tail wind up my 5 OClock:D

The serious competitors use bullet scoring gauges to score targets (for some disciplines) but I just look at the "grease" ring. If the ring breaks the line then it counts. I think this kind of shooting is very addictive because it's challenging. I find myself sitting here wishing I were at the range trying to improve on my first two attempts. Does anyone else here find it hard to hit precisely what they're aiming at? It sounds odd to say, but shooting groups is easier than shooting this kind of target ... that's my experience anyway. The difference between 3 points for a white and 0 points for a miss is about 0.375" if you're using a .308 Win. As for Savage, no need to apologize. I reinstalled and lapped the Talley rings and shot it last weekend and will start working up a load for it tomorrow but doubt I'll be able to use it for this match. It has a Zeiss 3-9x40mm scope which is less than ideal for this kind of target.

I mentioned that I had a camera at the 100 yard line to film my 15 minute strings. Here's my second attempt shot prone using the AI bipod. This is probably the most boring and annoying video ever made with the grass blowing in front of the camera but you can see that it was windy.

1858, Private range or do you go through a lot of cameras?

Public range and this is the first time I've ever taken a camera to the range. It's an old camera from work that no one uses anymore so I've recently "commandeered" it. I thought it'd be interesting to put it out at 100 yards. There's no way I'd hit it ... it's low to the ground (grass needs cutting for sure) and about 8 feet in front (but to the left) of the target. I'm uploading the first target string video as I type.

I wasn't insinuating that you would hit it...as for the other folks (BTW, I hear a good many ricochets in the background)... ;)

HA! You never know, but I'd probably be more concerned if it were my camera ... sad but true. But seriously, I shoot at the far end of the range so the chance of a direct hit is very remote.

We have some seriously good marksmen here! Any of these shots would have decapitated, skinned, gutted and buried Woodrow Woodchuck with a single trigger-pull.

One of these days I'll get the energy up to get out and try these myself. I have some targets printed. Seeing these posts serves as nice motivation.

Congrats and thanks!

1858,
Liked the video! You would have probably scored even better if your target and backer, wasn't moving about in the wind:D
I find this type of shooting way harder than shooting groups, like you said!!

Thanks ... here's the video for the first target. Not the best quality video I'm afraid. As I mentioned, I used a PRH 3-15X scope set on 15X. I wish my PRH 5-25x56mm was here ... I'd really like to have more magnification for this. My scope has 0.1 mil adjustments which is about 0.36" at 100 yards. I was holding off when using the bipod and found that a 2 o'clock hold on the black circle gave the best results.

I think it's psychologically more difficult too. If you miss the X-ring in F-Class, you score a 10, if you miss the 10 ring you score a 9, if you miss the 9 ring you score an 8 and so on. With this, you miss the white or the black by 0.001" you score a 1 or a 0 ... it's intimidating but it sure is good practice. Also, 15 shots may be more than many are used to.

Looks like a good challenge. Maybe my daughter and I will shoot the match this week.

My PRH 5-25x56mm arrived today. I'll try again this weekend (Saturday) shooting off a front rest and bipod and see if the scope makes any difference. I have an IPSC match on Sunday and then leave for a two-week trip but will be back in time to have another go.
