Centerfire Rifle Match(Jan)

esheato, you still did very well. Six of your 1pt blacks were just 1/4" or less from being 3pt whites. My server is down today due to a power outage but it'll be back up tomorrow when I post my second attempt. I leave for a two week trip tomorrow night so want to have another go before that. I need to do some reloading today.

Esheato, you shot just fine. If it was easy, it wouldn't be a challenge nor fun. Having said that, I'm thinking about shooting this match tomorrow depending on weather.

JDGray, the match runs until 1/31 right? I didn't get to mount my new scope, anneal any cases or make up any ammunition. I've been too busy finishing up a presentation for next week and packing for my trip ... :( I get back on 1/22 but will try again on 1/29 or 1/30. I look forward to checking back to see more attempts. Come on!!! Someone has to give 9X23WIN's daughter a run for her money.

Your good for the month;)

Next month, maybe I'll do something for the iron sight guys, and low magnification scopes. I didn't realize how hard the target was to see, since I'm a magnification whore:D I shoot at 1" dots at 200-300yrds, so I didn't think nothing of it.

My daughter and I have a little bet going and she has given me a two point handicap. I will need to shoot at least a 43 plus an 8X to beat her. Plus I got my pride to preserve!!!

I did indeed shoot for this today, however I am too embarrassed to post my results. It's been about two months since I've shot and it showed!

However, I spent the rest of my range time refocusing and getting back my consistency, and my groups shrunk back down to that .5 range. SO, next weekend I'll have a presentable score to post!

keep up the good work everybody!

Ooo. Haven't been here for a while. I am gonna try this!

This is one of the games the guys at the range do. They call it the donut game. =)

I went to the range today and shot the match or at least tried to. Upon arriving at the range, I knew I was doomed as soon as I saw the flags blowing wildly. Pretty good excuse huh? :neener:
The day started with me shooting the rimfire version of this match at 50 yards. What the heck, it's only 50 yards and it should be easy. Yea right, I was all over the target with my shot placements and the conditions were just getting worse. I couldn't believe how bad I shot!
It was now time to move the target to the 100yd line. I brought out the Remington 40X topped with a 24X fixed power Weaver. After firing around 20 or so practice rounds, it was time for me to meet my fate. The gusty winds were present and I just hoped for the best. My shots were flying all over the place with no consistency and I was clueless on how to make adjustments. End result was a score of 17-1X. (I incorrectly added wrong in the pic.) A mighty humbling day to say the least.

Edit-Forgot to mention I was shooting a 27 inch barrel chambered in 308 Win.

9X23WIN,
Thanks for posting regardless of how bad you think you did, this match is making good shooters look bad. Plus this lifts me up to third worst shooter:neener:

Nice stick, love that stock!!

I'm in Colorado Springs for the week and I can see why some members can't get out to shoot ... it is COLD!!! It's been around 10°F today and 1°F tonight!!! :what:

1858, we have about 5-6in. of snow here...not much happens here in NC when we get that much (yeah, I know...it's nothing compared to the yanks, but around here that is quite a bit). So like a lot of folks, I think i'll be waiting for the thaw to shoot in the match (or the rimfire match for that matter).

:)

There's always a plus side in shooting in the cold....you don't have to worry about the barrel over heating! :D

Finally finished installing the Timney trigger in my Mosin Nagant 91/30. Took 'er to the range this morning and shot the match target with it after re-zeroing the scope for 100 yards.

1942 Izhevsk manufactured Mosin Nagant 91/30 with a BSA Contender 3.5-12 scope set to 12 power mounted with an Advanced Rifle Parts no-gunsmithing mount.

Ammo was handloads, Sierra 174 grain Match King, .311 diameter BTHP over 42.0 grains of Hodgdon Varget with Federal 210M match primers.

I believe my score is 40-6X but depending on the judges call, the center circle scored a zero could possibly be a 1, the lower left could be an X and the one just to the right of it could actually be a 3 as it appears that the hole is just slightly into the center white which would possible be 42-7X but I'll leave that to the match director.

Jim

HEY!
It's the only range I have available to me. There are several outdoor ranges around here, but they are all either club owned and if you aren't in the clique, you don't get a chance to be a member, or the joiner fees are too far beyond an old, retiree on a fixed income.

That being said, some of you guys can shoot beyond 100 yards where I'm limited to the 100 on the indoor range. I'd love to be able to crank that old Mosin out to 600 or so just to see what it really is capable of. Still not bad for a $99.95 POS with $200 worth of mount and optics on it plus a little elbow grease cleaning up the stock. That rifle was born in the same year I was (1942). I've got a 98K, 8mm Mauser that's 2 years older and it will perform about as well (some days better) than the Mosin.

Next trip to the range, I'm taking the .17Mach2 and the 8mm. I load 205 grain cast, gas checked bullets in the 8mm that I make myself (including the gas checks) and it groups almost as tight as the 91/30. I'll try it on this very challenging target and see how it goes.

Maverick223 is using the same target in this month's rimfire match so I'll shoot it with both the rescued Savage Mark II I cleaned up and the Mauser before the month's out and see how they do. The rimfire match is at 50 yards.

Thanks for the advertisement, Jim; we sure could use a few more dedicated shooters (especially in the colder months).

BTW, irons are set for 25yds for anyone interested (optics at 50yds).

:)

KSCCHTrainer,
Great shooting! Looks like a 43-7X to me...You have a miss that looks like a 1, and a 1 that looks like a 3, and a 3 that looks like a 3-X, I'll enter your target as a 43-7X unless I'm seeing things, and you correct me:)

Thanks JD,
Your take is what it looked like to me, but I wanted to err on the conservative side and let you make the call. I tried to post as high a resolution target image as the forum would let me to make it easier for you guys to judge.

Regarding that Timney trigger on the 91/30, I had originally balked at spending 90 bucks on a trigger for a $99.95 rifle, but with all the other work I'd done on it, when Midway came out with an $80 sale on that thing, I bit the bullet and got one. It wasn't a "drop-in" as there was quite a bit of inletting necessary on the stock to get it to fit properly, but that target bears out the fact it was well worth the money and effort. Now I gotta get busy and load up a bunch more ammo to get ready for next month's match!

Jim

If I'm not mistaken is that not the same rifle you used to win one of my matches awhile back?

That thing was a freak of nature in terms of accuracy!!

RW,
Yes, it's the same one and it's even better now. I had done quite a bit of trigger work on it using the data from the Finnlanders about what they did to their M39's and actually put an M39 trigger in it. There was a Finnish guy over on surplusrifleforum.com that was selling them for $20 US and that included shipping. Never could get all the creep out of it though and it was still around 4.5 pounds. I really had to clamp my cheek down tight on it and squeeze the heck out of the sandbag, almost to the point of getting shaky to keep it from moving as I squeezed the trigger.

I also free floated the barrel, but that opened the groups up, so I got some .050 cork sheet and put a strip of cork about 2" long under the barrel right at the front of the forend. That damped out the harmonics and really made 'er shoot. Same kind of things the Finns did with their captured 91's and 91/30's to make 'em more accurate. Sure seems like they knew what they were doing.

All that has gone away now that I put the Timney trigger in it. I've got far more money in accessories on that thing now than I paid for the rifle 3 years ago this past November. It would take an awful lot of money to make me part with it now for sure!

While I was at the range today, there was a guy there with his son. The boy was in the Marine ROTC at his school (he was maybe 18 or 19) and they were shooting a Ruger M77 in .223. I offered to let the boy shoot the 91/30 (told him it was old enough to be his Great Grandfather's - it was made in 1942, same year I was born). Kid hadn't shot anything bigger than that .223 before. I warned him to "suck it up tight" and he shot a 5 ragged hole target just a bit larger than a nickel with it right out of the box! His old man had taught him right in the shooting department. Then I let the dad put 5 downrange with it and he did almost as good but it took a quarter to cover his group. Gave 'em the targets or I'd have scanned 'em and posted them along with this blurb. Neither had seen a 91/30 before and were headed for the gun shop when they left to get themselves one to play with. (Range's gunshop had one on the rack.) I been good at getting in other people's pockets lately - :D

I went to range today for load development and I brought a target just in cast I had extra rounds leftover to shoot the match. I had enough, but the loads were not all the same. There were difference of up to 3 grains of powder, so I just estimated and held over or under slightly. I did better today even with the NW winds blowing from the bay. My score was 40-3x.
Gun was a custom; caliber, a variant of the 300 Weatherby pushing a Sierra 240gr HPBT. Powder, Norma MRP 67-70gr.

9x23WIN,

Ain't nothin' wrong with that shootin' at all! I imagine if I hadn't had the luxury of shooting indoors, I'd have had a lot lower score. Ya get spoiled after a while having that 100 yarder indoors. Especially for load development. If they aren't busy (usually at opening time on Mondays) I can shoot as long as I want for only an hour's worth of range time.

Made it nice when I was forced to shoot really wimp Trail Boss loads just after the pacemaker implant a bit over a year ago. Dr. finally gave me an unconditional release last March.

I've got a couple Trail Boss loads for my 205 grain Cast gas check bullets in the 8mm Mauser that shoot MOA or just under at 100 yards. They have the trajectory of a mortar, but are very consistent if I do my part.

BTW, I LOVE THAT STOCK COLOR!

Jim
