Good this turned out well. Police depts that are shifting cops from CCW backgroun units to the street shouldn't be able to do that as it is creating a huge backlog in places like NY and they use that as an excuse to allow backgrounds to either take forever or not grant especially in this time of extreme violence across the nation and not enough police to handle it.

Think this is a great story of the value of having a CCW but not sure why the part about 'shifting cops from CCW background checks to the street', is accurate and if it is, is this a bad thing? More police on the street? So there are 'enough police to handle it'...
I think the delays is the 21 million guns sold in 2020, 7 million new gun owners, many who want a CCW...
And...'time of extreme violence across the nation'...??

Someone in Chiraq with a concealed carry permit? Remarkable. Has to be a relative of a senior Cook County or Chitown municipal official. It’s not like John Q law-abiding Public can get one. Seriously, it would be interesting to know more about the permit holder.

Government outfits that don't want to issue permits... can block them with the simple expedient of deliberately not assigning enough personnel to deal with the volume of requests...(surprise, surprise...) . Then when challenged, they can say that they're not preventing folks from having a license when in fact they are.... Unfortunately that's just bureaucracy 101. Not hard to recognize the signs when you're a former bureaucrat yourself (22 years in law enforcement...).

In every state and sub-division of government all of us need to identify elected officials that approve these sorts of tactics and work to retire them (good luck if you live in a big state controlled by these kinds of folks...).

I agree that civilians could be doing the gun background checks but they aren't. Cops are doing it and when you takes cops out of that unit onto the street and don't process background checks for gun permits you are in a way preventing people from exercising their Constitutional rights. Also, some believe that they are using this as an excuse to not process CCW applications.

Chicago, though I would not live there, is part of Illinois, a "shall issue" (But slow) state. A permit in Chi Town is the same as in Peoria, though a few burbs may have a few additional problems.

This happened right down the street from my brother in laws house while I was there. West end of Humbolt park is a pretty bad part of town. He’s on the east end. State is backlogged on issuing ccw permits. I’ve been waiting 100 days so far. Probably another 60-90 days to wait. Not difficult to get one but I did have to take 16 hours of class and range time, submit finger prints (not required but speeds up the process), and fill out an online form.

I agree totally. In states that are not shall issue you can get stuck in whatever delaying tactics they use to slow roll the process.

22 years ago I applied for my NYC handgun target permit (which I don't think exists anymore and is just a permit to possess but not carry). A process that should have taken 90 days took over a year.

During that time I discovered the first of the officers reviewing my permit retired, so all of his reviews ended up on the bottom of the pile of the next guy. The next guy eventually went on disability, so it started all over again.

At One Police Plaza where the pistol permit division was located you could actually see into the big room from the counter. During the year that I was waiting there was never a sense of urgency from the people working there.

Now to be fair, the process for the NYC rifle and shotgun permit was as fast as possible and I was noticed immediately after the morally waiting period. That permit was issued from a totally different location however.

I get what you are saying about NY but the shooting was in Chcago. In CO, the BGC, for a simple buy or CCWP is done by CBI, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, CCWP is started by a civilian at the County Sheriff(Boulder) and my last purchase took almost a week to get done.
The gent in Chicago HAD a CCWP, used it and the outcome was great...Just seems like a way to point out a problem elsewhere(not that it may not be a problem). Lots of issues elsewhere with buying guns, getting a CCWP and buying guns and ammo..

BTW-"A NYPD source familiar with the situation"..un-named and not identified source..In other conversations on other topics this would be labeled as 'fake news'..just sayin...

Anti-gunners will intentionally and incorrectly include that as a death by gun violence.
