Looking for any knowledgeable member on Drillings.
I'm finally in a position to potentially purchase one...prefer12/12/30-06
What should I be looking for in regards to condition and function.
I'll have to do this long distance.

Im far from knowledgeable, but being a European style of gun, most are in European calibers. Rimmed cartridges are more prevalent, due to the nature of break action guns. Things like 8x57JRS will most likely be more common.

Ive read of many being chambered for 5.6x52mmR (22 savage HP) due to it being popular for the small deer species in Europe.

And lets not forget that many European countries forbid the use of any military calibers by civilians. Another strike against finding one in 30-06. Not saying you wont find one, but it'll be tough.

If i were to custom make a drilling, I would want 16Ga, 22 sav HP, and a big rifle bore like 375 H&H.

I agree with DM-he knows his drillings! I will be looking for a Sauer 16x16/9.3x74R in a few years-got a couple more guns to get yet.

That would be a Vierling- 4 barrels, and very $$$$. I've only seen one in my life, and it was 16x16/.22 HP/9.3x74R. The price had 5 numbers in it, (the first one wasn't '1') and that was over 20 years ago.
The .22 HP was in the rib.

Guns international has 5 pages of Drillings, and a few are 12/30-06.
I'm leaning towards 12 due to the abundance of shells out there. 16 ga is a bit harder to get, and the assortment is nothing near to 12.

Whoa. I guess I have expensive taste! Does it come with a carriage to move it around!?

Not that it adds anything to the discussion but kinda on topic....

About 3-4 weeks ago backyard neighbors 70 some year old wife knocks on my front door. I walk to the door, open it and there she is holding a bockbüchsflinte pattern rifle. I really don’t know her that well but we’ve (her husband and I) have spoken through the fence a few times. Believing she was there to offer it for sale I’m thinking...’Frulk, the gods have smiled on you this day’. They didn’t :( She knew I and her husband had spoken about guns and she brought the gun over to ask me what kind of rings/scope she needed to buy for it as the original set and glass was lost some years ago. She was trying to buy them as a Christmas gift.

16 gauge over a .308. Beautiful, deep relief engraving wherever you could put it. A few handling marks and some light blueing wear but otherwise very well taken care of. Her father had it built (commissioned) for him while he was stationed in Germany and on his passing her husband inherited it. Took down some info and told her I’ll do some research and get back to her.

Late afternoon they both stop by and he’s holding the gun. Explained to him that the replacement rings were a quick release style and still available. Would run anywhere from $200 on up used and there was a high probability his originals were engraved in the style of the gun and that would be problematic at best to find a set like that. Also told him that his gun came out of the historic Austrian town of Ferlach. Builder was a Franz Sodia. Franz no longer produces guns and that the going rate for his rifles appears to be $4800-$10K depending on configuration. Also clarified for him the meaning of a guild gun and that the term is frequently misapplied.

Without a doubt in terms of quality, fit and finish it was in the top three guns I’ve ever held. He has no plans to sell it and I was happy to hear that. Should stay with the family it was commissioned for.

Lot of steel there, what do these things weigh?
Personally, I prefer Krieghoff's over Sauer's, and the Krieghoff I hunt with all the time, weighs in right at 7 pounds...

It's 16ga., so it's lighter than a 12ga. by quite a bit.

I don't find 16ga. to be a problem at all, you can buy about any load you can think of in 16ga. on line, but I find plenty of 16ga. ammo at Walmart and other places that sell ammo. Maybe not near as much variety, but like I said, I can get that on line.

Lastly, I made a set of these sleeves,

and they slide right in my 16ga. allowing me to shoot any 20ga. ammo I want, including 3" shells...

As early as 1939 the A.F. Stoeger house brand shotguns and combination guns could be had with Dural receivers along with their Krupp steel barrels. Weights 6.5-7.5 lbs.

I bought a new Krieghoff with a Dural receiver 16ga, 30-06,

standard.jpg

It was very accurate and weighed just under 7 pounds,

but if you are going to put a lot of rounds through the gun, you don't want Dural. And buying used, you don't know what someone else has fired through it, especially in 30-06.

BTW, so much for some here, claiming NP's aren't accurate!

Ve don't do dose in Deutschland, Amerikaner dummkopf.

I looked in Alfa with page after page of combination guns and no sign of a rifle over shot except the doppelbuchsdrilling with two rifle barrels over one shot.
