That's the question. I honestly don't think there is a way other than making sure they don't the get power to enact it. For those in office, the trick is to show them it would be politically suicidal. That isn't likely to happen in places like NYC, but maybe in some places where they are still listening to the electorate. (Blue incumbent, red state.)
The good news is that they are already backing down from the mag and AW bans. The problem now is the background check silliness.
The solution to this is that the government can't fix the problem. We have people who are either mentally ill, or just plain ole evil. There is no way to make sure bad\crazy people don't do bad things. If we want to fix the problem of addiction, violence, or anything else, we need to change the heart\mind, not the hardware. At this point, we are SO woefully behind, we've got plenty of trouble coming.
