Do you KNOW what guns you own?

I have a pretty good memory, I know all makes and models, and the first few serial numbers of some of my guns.

I also know not only mine, but my wifes' social security number, my license plate number, her license plate number, my drivers license number, my health insurance policy number, and my primary credit card number. Pretty sad, I know.

CZ 75B SP-01
Sig P226R
Bushmaster AR
Kahr/Auto Ordnance Thompson
Marlin 1894C in .44Mag
Ruger New Vaquero
Para-Ordnance PXT45E (they need snappier names)
Walther P22
Browning Buck Mark Hunter

I think that's all of them. Maybe. Sure.

I keep an inventory solely due to the potential of theft. I don't keep it in the safe with the guns though.

I don't own enough not to know what and where every single one of them is. I only have 6 at the moment.

let's just say when we moved, I found another shipping crate with 15-20 milsurps I had forgotten all about......

Don't know

I don't know for sure. I once could, but that was when I only had two gun cabinets full. Just tried to mentally list them all and missed a couple.

I keep records, but I don't commit them to memory. To quote Albert Einstein - "Why would I memorize something I can easily look up?"

I don't have so many that it's a problem. Can't honestly say I have all my serial #'s memorized, though.

I know what I have and given just a few minutes I can write the inventory from memory.

What I do need to do though is document every gun, with full serial numbers, descriptions, and pictures for my wife if anything happens to me any time soon. I hate to think about her trying to liquidate the collection without that info. I'll also need to include current values and update that annually.

I have this info for most of my guns, but probably not all of them, and it's definately not all in one place right now. I think I've probably been putting it off out of some irrational fear that as soon as I finish it, hand her the list and CD and say, "Here's the list," I'll suddenly drop dead on the spot.

Can I list them by the pound? Example
110 lbs of 22 cal long guns
300 lbs of 223 cal long guns
200 lbs of 45 cal hand guns
2000 lbs of 105mm um... long gun LOL

Thanks for this thread.

It caused me to actually take the time to do an inventory.

I'd have told you yes... I knew everything I had... BUT I just stepped into the gun vault and looked around a bit...

there are 5 or 6 TC Contender barrels I forgot I had, in a box in the corner, underneath at least 3 MORE Remington Nylon series rifles that aren't racked with the other ones, that I don't remember acquiring...

then there's this darned Pattern 17 Enfield "Eddystone" that from OUTWARD appearance is pristine and original, but has "300 H&H Magnum" stamped on the barrel... I VAGUELY remember this gun, but I'll be darned if I know for sure where it came from...

then there's this Winchester "Black Shadow"... not a flippin CLUE where it came from... I'm SURE I didn't spend any of MY hard earned money on it... and there ain't NO way my 5'-1" Girlfriend bought a 7MM Rem. Mag... if it was Dad's, it'd be in HIS collection of Winchesters...

I checked my spreadsheet... ALL these guns are listed, but I don't remember any of them...

I have a small number of guns so:

Purchase date, location, price, serial #, etc. is in my head.

...and somewhere's I have pics of all guns I've ever owned. Serial #s included. At least they're not all in the same place like a single list though.

That is a problem my wife has, she doesn't know how many I have, and I'm not going to help her out.

I could get most of them....but I have over 40 and some would slip thru the cracks.

I keep a paper inventory with value, where they came from, serials etc....

Then I use a program called GunSafe (its a great and FREE program) to keep all that information as well. Two copies.....one on my home PC and one on my USB memory drive.

Anyone that may want to try out GunSafe check it out.

Heres a screenshot of the main screen....you can keep track of pictures, maintenance etc...

I know all mine, but not their serial numbers (I have a list serial numbers, just don't keep it in my head). I've been known to forget a model number and have to look it up. But I didn't forget the gun itself. I tend to sort them mentally by caliber.

Of course

I have them organized by caliber on respective shelves, etc. and I inventory them daily. I also have a detailed list including make, model, caliber, serial number, when and where purchased, purchase price and replacement price. Beside that information is a .jpg picture. Yes, I know precisely what I have. In Michigan, you have to report a firearm stolen ASAP. I would not want the officials to be the ones to alert me that they were missing.

Yes I can list every gun I own and I have no desire to ever get to the point where I cant. In fact I plan on making two more purchases to add to my collection and then I shall have all that I want. Figure that will be good for a few years before new/neat stuff comes out that I dont have ;) .

I know the types and serial #'s of all my guns. Except for a few that don't have serial numbers. At least, I think I do...

In fact I plan on making two more purchases to add to my collection and then I shall have all that I want.

I am only ONE gun away from completing my collection. Have been for the last several gun purchases, and probably always will be.

Remington 597 bull barrel. :barf: on the magazine issues.
