Do you know how many firearms you own?

I am directing this question at those who have more substantial collections/accumulations ... and not asking for anyone to actually post numbers.

For a long time I have been thinking doing an inventory of my ammo, but have been putting this off because it is going to take quite a while and be a bit of a PITA.

While thinking about this, I realized that it has a long time since I knew how many firearms I own ... so I did an inventory on those, instead ... which only took ~5 minutes.

I was very surprised by the result ... I had no idea I had anywhere near that many.

Decided to pose this question for those who may have also lost track of their count.

Enjoy. :)

I am the owner of twenty firearms, fourteen handguns, four rifles and two shotguns.
And I enjoy shooting each and everyone of them!

PS: Oops, I didn't see where I was not supposed to give an actual number! It did
take a while to see if I could remember every gun I am the owner of, finally I had
to resort to my serial number list to figure that out.

Yes I sure do. Also have all their pertinent information written down for insurance purposes. I did have an exact count of all my ammo a few years ago (was really bored at the time), but I need to do it again as I have purchased, used, and or sold some since then.

Started years ago with an inexpensive blank book and started recording my serial numbers. While I did this more for insurance purposes (in case of theft) and ability to provide the serial numbers to the police, I'm sure I could use it for inventory control. If I sell a gun, I do use it to record who purchased it.

I also have a record book where I record the gun's basic information along with acquisition date/source, price paid, and when applicable, sale date and payment received (if any).

And I don't have enough to wonder how many there are. I may have to stop and do a quick count, based on memory, but it'll probably be some number of decades before I have enough to not be sure.

Now, ammo...I'm not really sure how much ammo I have, for the most part. Too much turnover and too many different cartridges, brands, styles, etc.

Currently, I have over a dozen functioning (1 permanently retired) firearms but less than 2 dozen. I do not have as many as I would like to have (you knew that was coming ;) ).

I'm also like Warp in that some of my ammo is in sealed containers and I don't get to shoot as much as I would like (no range locally). The largest quantity is a variety of 2 3/4" & 3" shotshells with 7.62x39 & .22LR just about tied for 2nd place.

Of course I know.
I keep a detailed inventory including serial numbers on an Excel spreadsheet.

So I know exactly how many I own.

And I will know the exact serial number, date purchased, price paid, current value, physical description, and anything else about them if any of them are ever are stolen.

Every gun owner should do the same thing, if not on a spread sheet, at least in a note-book.

See this about that:

Many answers along these lines, but do you actually know, right now, w/out looking at the spreadsheet?

Exact number? No...

I could tell someone every gun I own and they could keep track of the total, if that's important. It would be in the range of a couple dozen or so.

Good for you.

Most of mine are documented in a bound book but the multiple Incomings & Outgoings leaves me with no real sense of the outstanding total ... which is why I was so surprised.

For non-bound-book purchases made in the past 30 years, or so, I have the detailed receipts, although there are a few that predate this period or came with no receipt.

A single, all-encompassing Excel file is good idea and will go on my To Do List.

unmade ammo equals how many primers i have; i balance bullets/powder & primes so i can assemble what i want, when i want it. add a couple hundred self-defense by caliber.

guns i can guess to within 10
of course that number is a guess also.

--->like beatledog7 everything is carefully logged
but i only take it out to update it and seldom look
further than is necessary.

Depends on point of view, I reckon. If I'm loving on them, I don't have enough. If I'm schlepping them from the basement, up the stairs, and out to the truck for a range trip - then I have too damn many. And I'll NEVER let my wife see them all together at one time!

my wife has but to look at her jewelery to know how many we have--
one for her, one for me

I have mine inventoried in 2 different books along with pictures of each firearm, they are kept in 2 different locations, 1 in a safe location.

Do I know how many I have at the moment? No, but the number is somewhere around 3 digits plus.

Yes my wife knows where my records are kept, and its a non issue for either of us. As is my extensive watch collection.

There was a time that I had enough that I used a spreadsheet to keep track of them, especially since I tended to buy and trade more often. Nowadays it's fairly static and I don't have nearly as many.

I wish I had so many guns I could not keep track of exactly how many. :D

Unfortunatly, barring a winning lotto ticket I do in fact know exactly how many guns I own.

After thinking about it, I would have to go through them all and count them. Sold/Traded/Bought to many in recent years to know exactly without looking at my insurance cheat sheet.
