Picked up some of this Czech surplus ammo for my recently purchased 1942 M38.
After first firing 20 rounds of 148gr light ball through it, this Czech 46gr ammo is awesome. Seemed to be about as accurate, still produces a loud bang and fireball.

http://www.sgammo.com/product/surpl...-surplus-46-grain-hollow-core-low-recoil-ammo

Out of the short barrel of the M38 (which has been counterbored), 10' from the muzzle:
46gr Czech Hollow Core RN: 3212 fps, 1054 ft-lbs
148gr Russian light ball, 2612 fps, 2242 ft-lbs.
174gr Silver Bear FMJ, 2427 fps, 2276 ft-lbs.

I did have one failure to fire out of 30 fired. 2 solid primer strikes. Still, much more pleasant and fun to shoot, and not much more expensive than spam cans of ball. Check it out.

Yep, that stuff is plain awesome fun. I bought a can way back, and then another can when it got scarce, and I've got an order in for two boxes from sgammo after a friend mentioned they had it. Get it while you can!

Feels like getting punched in the shouldet over and over when I shoot mh mosin. Might have to try this stuff!

Have you guys looked at this website's selection? If you can deal with the hogepoge surplus, you can get some great deals. And there customer service is great. I'm looking forward to buying some ammo from them.

I bought a case of the practice ammo when it was cheap. It has been known that I will load one practice round in the mag with regular ball to show shooters how they flinch.......chris3

I bought a bunch of Czech in these blue-green boxes real cheap, about 2.75, three years ago. It worked real good.

Any of you Mosin guys had trouble with steel case ammo hanging in the chamber with your rifles?

Mine will only tolerate about 3 shots before I have to bang the bolt on something like a tree to get it freed up and pull out the empty. It does great with brass cases; but steel case is pretty bad.

Brass case 7.62x54r. You must have some money or reload. Chamber cleaning is a fine fix. This might sound stupid and I have not tried it, but some people wash down the ammo they are going to use with silicone spray first. I never had binding problems so I never tried it.

I stand corrected. Could you please tell me or anyone else reading this who the vendors are? I'm sort of new to this and and any ammo sales sources with that described ammo would be appreciated.

Wish I could justify spending money on that ammo right now. I have a friend whose kid would love to shoot my MN but his dad says he isn't capable of the rifle yet(he shoots other rifles just hasn't worked up to the MN in his dads opinion). This would be great for him.

Sam Cade; Sir, none of the sites you mentioned have anything like the brass ammo you mentioned before. you need to update. copper washed is not brass, and the surplus ammo is running out fast in 7.62x54r. uh,"buy cheap and stack deep."

The supply is volatile. It comes and goes, so keep checking.

Update what?

copper washed is not brass,

Well yeah.

Define fast. Probably more 7.62x54r lying around in arsenals than anything else and its still in use as a primary cartridge by all the former warsaw pact nations.

uh,"buy cheap and stack deep."

Always good advice.

It is the laquer on the steel cases that gets soft as the rifle heats up and makes the chamber sticky. I KNOW my chambers are clean but if I shoot the green steel cased ammo, the bolt gets sticky. chris3

The Yugo 762x54R 'repacked ammo' is pretty neat to for those who need brass case or non-magnetic ammo if you do not mind cleaning some greasy rounds.

I absolutely love the Czech SRTA ammo, my 7 year old son shot some last weekend and when he got done with 5 rounds he said "that hurt a little bit, I want to shoot my 10-22". I wonder what he would have said If he had shot standard ball? probably would have been his last trip to the range for a while. One thing to consider when trying to get youngsters involved in this sport is that if shooting hurts then it looses its fun and in turn the interest to the child.

Ive cured about 20 cases of "sticky bolt" with a 20ga bore brush chucked into a drill, with or without winding a bit of steel wool into the brush.

Ive never seen an instance in which it wasn't a chamber related issue
(cosmo,rough chamber,dirty chamber)
or a user related issue.

For an interesting experiment, take a fired lacquer coated cartridge and apply a lighters flame to it.
Hold it with pliers ;)

Once again. The7.62x54r is still used in some sniper rifles and machine guns and is in fact the oldest round of it's type still in common use. But it is not in primary use by any former warsaw pact countries. You gave four sites, none of which have brass ammo, then narrowed it down to two, which are doubtful. The copper washed ammo will usually work better in hot guns than the paint coated stuff. I think aim had some russian? last time I looked for about 90 bucks for 440. Probably not a bad deal. If you want brass norma or hornady? for reload or notare about all you can get.

...lol

The PK series machine gun, the primary GPMG of the former warsaw pact and in current production in half a dozen countries is in 7.62x54.

...and the SVD, the primary marksmans weapon is in 7.62x54.

What are you talking about?

Dude. THis is the internet. Use it.

Norma,Hornady,Lapua,Privi/Wolf Gold and S&B are all sources of reloadable 7.62x54 or brass.

Sorry, I disagree. The ammo is causing the sticking cases, not the chamber in any of my rifles. I can shoot Albanian, Russian, Polish, or commercial ammo all day long and they all extract like butter. I shoot the green steel cased stuff and after about 6 rounds, I need a hammer to open the bolt. I have an extensive collection of Mosin Nagants and they all are that way......chris3
