Good enough groups for newbie self-defense?

You should be able to hit a 10 inch pie plate at any distance with either hand, long arm or handgun, stationary, moving to cover, laying down, crouching, etc. When you can do that, you're good enough.
 
I'd actually try to get my skill level to a 6" paper plate (only because they don't make a 5" one)...as the rule of thumb is that your effectiveness (ability to hit your target) goes down by 50% under pressure
