I think that the downfall of the 260 is mostly time of when it was introduced. there are so many people like myself that already had a 243 and 7mm-08 it isnt worth getting another gun that is so close in performance.I think the 260 is a great round but i dont see myself buying one anytime soon.I think the 280 kinda has the same problem with the 270 and the 30-06
Remington screwed the .280 with the initial factory ammo that they released that was way low in pressure and thus way behind the fairly well accepted and established .270 in performance. It would have still faced an uphill struggle against the .270 but it might have had a better chance if Rem had given it legs from the beginning.

I have been hunting for nearly 20 years now and to be honest I got tired of the same old '06 and 270 everybody else uses.
I have two mausers that I built myself, both small ring and both are hard hitting and accurate. My go to rifle is 6.5 Swede using Norma ammo and the other is in 7mm Mauser using PPU ammo. The swede is also my betting rifle.

Yeah, I know. My problem was that I wanted a left hand bolt 6.5 Swede. Don't try holding yer breath till ya finds one. Therefore I built one & damn glad I did. It too is a "bettin' gun".
The 6.5x55 is just a remarkably accurate cartrage, never shot one that would not touch those tiny holes.

Not a Tikka, but a very fine rifle nonetheless. Last time I was there, about two weeks ago, there was a new CZ550 in 6.5 Swede at Bob Ward & Sons in Helena MT. (406)443-2138. That gun will have the single-set trigger also. Nice but not exceptional wood, and the bolt's on the wrong side of course (understand that I'm a lefty).

I've lately wondered why the .358 Winchester isn't more popular. It seems like a great, flexible medium range cartridge suitable for everything from deer to moose, yet as far as I know there is only one manufactuer currently making a gun chambered in .358 Win and only limited range of pre-loaded ammo being sold for it.
Thanks, I'm aware CZ makes a 6.5x55, I'm sure it's a fine rifle.

You apparently haven't owned one of the "bad" batch of howa's in this caliber.

Nope, but I can vouch for the Winchester 70, Tikka T3 and the original Mauser
Never owned a Howa I don't like their stock, does not fit me right.haywoodhunter

I'll spout up and give my opinion on my 6.5x55mm Howa. It shoots 1 bullet I reload MOA (140gr Hornady Interlock) and with three other bullets/loads it is a 3moa+ rifle. I have ordered 4 different boxes of factory ammunition to try out so I always have some just in case ammo while my reloading supplies are in storage. I have read quite a few post of people getting results like mine, minus the one good shooting load of course.

I wonder what the twist rate is on the Howa? The CZ 550 for example is a 1:9 twist. That's certainly not going to stabilize the 160 RN bullets and some 140gr designs may be too long for it as well. I can't imagine the Howa would have a slower twist than 1:9 though...

Howa is 1:8. Mine stabilizes 140gr bullets just fine, at least the ones I have tried. I believe the longest was the Hornady 140gr SST. I've got no problem ringing a 12x12 steel plate at 300 yards with the 3+ moa loads, so my guess it those are just more inaccurate than under spun.

I don't remember the particulars about the "bad" howas other than they dropped the caliber offering shortly afterwards.
I didn't mess with the 6.5x55 very long to ever find a load it liked.

@ post #47 -I believe that's the thread i started on another forum you're talking about. It definitely got out of control lol.
