  • More than 14. I am one lucky SOB to have so many guns stuck in the back of my safe.

What are the most guns you have purchased in a year for personal use, not including guns inherited or given to you?

The gun journey thread had me recall the chronological order of my gun purchases (not inherited) and it was somewhat interesting. I joined online gun forums in 2017 and the THR in 2019. I know that gun forums have influenced and informed some of my purchases - mostly for the better.

I certainly have all the guns I need and more and I am really close to having all the guns I want (that are within my budget). I don't ever anticipate getting past 7 in a year like the great Wallyworld buying spree of 2020. I have about 3 more guns on my "list". I may sell a couple after completing my list, or I may go off in a different direction. Here's my chronological history.

1982 - 1 (First rifle)
1983 - 1 (First shotgun)
1990 - 1 (First pistol)
1998 - 1
2008 - 1
2009 - 1
2015 - 1 (First AR)
2016 - 1
2017 - 1
2018 - 1
2019 - 3
2020 - 7 (My "Year of the Gun" great Wallyworld giveaway :))
2022 - 3

Mine was 2020 as well. Which I think is interesting because that's when prices started to spike, but I got some of my best deals that year (including my $2 walmart closeout).

2019-2022 saw between 13-14 guns per year. Mostly handguns, but several rifles and a few shotguns appeared as well.

So far this year it has been two, a Springfield SA -35 and a Rem Arms 20 ga 870.

If you counted inheritance, add three rifles and a shotgun to 2022 as well. :)

Stay safe.

Yeah, there were a few good deals to be had. The 2 guns in 2020 that were not Wallyworld clearance were a Beretta 92x at a good price with $100 rebate and a DPMS A-15 clearance from the DPMS bankruptcy.

I think it was 2019 but it may have been 2018. Before covid but not long before. I ran across a few “as-is” multiple gun buys and snagged some good deals, especially on antiques sold as junk/parts guns.

Nope, nothing to do with automatic transmission fluid or my anterior talo-fibular ligament :). Is that what a transmission mechanic looks like? Or is that an orthopedic surgeon wearing an oversized mask with a brick pattern?

I was just a bit curious to see how much of a hobby problem I have (note, I won't mention the word addiction in certain company). Put another way, if my volume of purchases on, of all places, a gun forum exceed the average, I might have a hobby problem. If I'm below average, MAYBE I don't have a hobby problem and have to get busy buying more to keep up.

If someone is on a gun forum, it is probably safe to assume that they have a gun. It's also probably safe to assume that there are a high percentage of gun owners on a gun forum have more guns than the average American. I don't think posting this will give me too many problems, except finding out I have a problem.:uhoh:

ETA: It's also become apparent after perusing gun forums, that gun owners are the least safe boaters in the world. Advice - I'll never go boating with a gun owner.:)

Rookie numbers for sure...

You have members here that can tell you they bought a gun for x amount on this day in 1951.
I am not that person. Did I buy the gun this year? Last Year? 10 years ago? :ninja: close approximations is my best guess.

Not being paranoid but I prefer not to answer these types o questions in this day and age especially with all the different agencies looking over our shoulders. I've probably mentioned too many "things" I have aleady.
I don't play the Faceplace games where they ask "have you ever..."
I have been liquidating stuff I bought on a whim thinking "cool, I could .....". Bad retirement job, working in a gun store.
When asked how many guns I have, the standard answer these days is, " Three. My bird gun, my deer gun and my closet gun."

Dang, made me go create a lookup table in my firearms spreadsheet :)
Peak number of purchases was 5, in 1996.
Funny, I don't remember that being a banner year. But, that was in the middle of the "Happy Time" for milsurps, too.
Memory can be a fickle thing.

Now, for the "I'm not answering in public" objections, please note that I'm not including mean (nor average) purchases per year, nor total owned nor disposed of. I know those values, but that's for my inventory use, and mine alone.

I'm still waiting for my gun year ... One a month sounds like an excellent target to aim for

Realistically, my budget is 1 per year (I know, rookie numbers). For some reason I thought 6 was enough - until 2015. I hope to do 1 per year for the next 3 years. After that, it will slow down and the pace will be like the early years, if I buy any more at all. Would I be happier with 1 a month for the next 3 months? Yes. Yes I would.

I'm not sure why the wife didn't raise her eyebrows too much about the 2019-2022 spending spree, other than the prices weren't too unreasonable. I'm sure my wife has more shoes and purses now that I didn't notice.

Could firearms buying frequency and purchase date ranges be used to establish patterns of state of mind in a red flag situation?

Until that answer is known, perhaps some of us might prefer not to publicly disclose this type of personal information.

1. You're not under oath or being held to the requirement to be truthful here, so it isn't really something that can be used against you.
2. How would buying several guns a year lead to a problematic state of mind?
3. No one is asking how many illegal guns you buy each year. The assumption is that you would only be purchasing - or discussing - firearms that you are legally able to buy and possess. If you buy dozens of illegal guns a month, do not tell us. That is between you and the po-po, and I don't wanna know.

This is more of a "keeping up with the Joneses" sort of thing. What is '"normal" gun buying behavior?

No worries! If someone doesn't want to answer, that's fine by me. Maybe I'll look more normal by the numbers if someone who is an outlier doesn't post and make my buying habits stray from the average norm.

That said, I'm comfortable posting what I posted. So far, I'm looking pretty average here.:scrutiny:

About 20 years ago when so many inexpensive milsurps (both firearms & ammo) were flooding the market, a lot here participated in the subsequent years-long feeding frenzy and ended up with a beaucoup "guns". That served to skew such annual numbers for many.

... I hope to do 1 per year for the next 3 years. ...

FWIW, that sounds like an excellent guideline to me. IMO, one of the good things about not dialing up the acquisition speed too high is that you have more time to actually become comfortable & accomplished with each firearm before you add the next.

Enjoy! :)

Wait—

—now that the govt. realizes that out of about 300 Million guns in America, they know that (vast majority of) people with multiple posts on gun boards …actually…Also own guns!

Say it isn’t so ! :what:

The biggest year for my guns was 2008. Don't ask me what they were—-because the Black Helicopters will come “ chip “ me .

Don’t remember exactly but probably in the mid-‘90’s during my Golden Age of the Gun Show. Wouldn’t be surprised if I bought 15 or 20 in one year during that period.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the only guns I still have from that time are my SMLE and a Taurus 85CH. Funny that those two ended up on my Absolute Keepers list.
