Help me pick a cartridge I don't want, to go in a gun I don't like.

Old trigger write up, FWIW
.......................
The trigger spring fits into the lower trigger piece by virtue of the coils matching the hole's threads. Factory epoxy was pretty good, so during removal (simple pry from above) I messed up the factory spring a bit. Big whoop. I ran a 10-24 set screw up through the hole, keeping the bottom pretty flush and took a new same coil D spring and threaded it to the exposed bit of set screw. This made for a nice trap and the trigger was better after some spring trim- still was safe with major impact testing.

Overtravel was huge.

Checked the web and some dork said "don't make the spring post as tall as your inward post".

I looked at my trigger and went ***????

The safety slides back and forth, and when back and on "safe" the lower plastic part is over the factory safety screw. Where properly set, it comes to bear immediately against the plastic making for no trigger movement. Pushed forward to 'fire" the portion of the safety where the safety screw bears is out of the way and the screw can travel up a ways during trigger pulling. There is NOTHING over the safety screw.

Maybe Savage changed the trigger design, I dunno. But from what a guy posted on another forum.......it makes no sense. Not with the trigger mine has.

Anyway, I yanked my setscrew, put in a reg cap screw of substantial length and took it to where all overtravel was gone.

To remove the bolt one has to press the cocking indicator and trigger after firing.

With all overtravel adjusted out the sear would come back and drag/catch on the trigger piece farther back. I could have ground the offending bit away, but instead backed off my overtravel screw a smidge. The bolt comes out OK now. No biggie.

It just so happens that a button head 10-24 of standard length works fine. I grabbed one from the archery bench, stock screw, maybe .50" long, dunno, never measured it. It stuck up same as my longer one at new setting so i just cranked it in. The head being more shallow than a cap screw works good at never contacting anything on the bottom side, although a cap screw might clear, the trigger guard does sit away a bit.

75 cent spring from hardware store fit over the screw fine. It's not attached to anything, is just trapped when assembled. I should count coils and write that down, in case I monkey with it more and lose it.

Anyway, the spring I got (I should get part # from hardware store, was in a vendor vidmar type of deal) is of more coarse pitch, even when compressed, so it doesn't match the pitch of the 10-24 screw, so there's no added drag - sometimes I overthink stuff.

So yeah, a little stoning and $2 worth of stuff and the trigger is much better. Creep gone, weight lighter, and almost all overtravel removed. It now is usable.

I was messing around with a buddy's Savage Axis yesterday at the range. We put a decent Leupy scope on it and guess what, it shot great with plain 'ol green box Remington core-lokt's. I have no idea why people are so down on the Axis when in fact they should be promoting it as one of the most accurate out of the box rifles you can get for the money, if not THE most accurate for the money.

As soon as the market gives us an inexpensive, lightweight, easy to work on hunting rifle, all we do is drag it's name through the mud. LOL

We're a pretty ungrateful lot if you ask me.

To your question, because Axis' only come in long action, I'd sure be tempted to find some new old stock 6.5x55 or 7x57 barrel laying around and throw that on there!

Of the two calibers, I'd say stick with the .270. Because snooze 'O eight is about right.
The reason I dislike the axis isn't any functional reason, they just don't look or feel like an action/rifle I really want. I often recommend them for folks looking for the utmost accuracy on a budget.
For me tho I generally prefer the Ruger Americans so will offten offer those as an alternative option, just as.other guys like the TCs, and a few even like the 783s.

270 vote noted:D

Could go .458 socom or .450 BM..........but I've already seen those conversions done on Axis.
Had a .458 Socom AR I really liked, again it's one I've considered for a short action build....dunno if it could be crammed into a mini bolt. But that would be AWSOME!

55K trucks/Jeeps and shoot 300 dollar rifles and 200 dollar shotguns.
One even told me that a .22 rf that costs over 100 bucks is silly.
Well those 50k+ trucks make better status symbols than an expensive rifle only a few of us will fawn over :D:p
Nothing wrong with that tho, spend your money on what makes you happy lol

I got zero prob with folks buying whatever they want.
And taking a cheapy and making it something different sounds like fun.
Shoot whatever one wants! :)

But an Axis is an Axis and will always be an Axis.

They work.

I think some stuff works as good, for not much more money, and is nicer.
Spend your $ however you want.

I did spend my own money on an Axis, and tweaked it, and it shot good.
And I still didn't like it.

My 2K beater Jeep has deer blood in the back.
Been there for what now, 3 weeks.
Eh, I might clean it.

I'd rather use the $ I'd blow on cleaning products......put it toward another rifle ;)

Hmmm, maybe I'd get a nicer rifle sooner, if I gave up showering and shaving..........

.270WSM is now on the table.

The other thought that just popped into my head is that the WSM savages are usually large shank, the Axis is small. I wonder if there are issues there.

Google seems to think it's not a problem. If the .270 WSM is on the table, I want to change my vote from the basic Winchester to the WSM, 8 twist ( read somewhere 8.3 is the slowest recommended for the 170gr), 24" barrel loaded long.

If you're also looking at big bores, the .400 Whelen might be an option.

I don't care about impressing others.
Beater Jeeps haul deer out of the woods fine.

A nice rifle isn't going to get trashed by a JD Byrider vehicle.

A nice looking rifle may not shoot as good as a cheapy..
A nice looking gal (8 or higher on scale of 1-10) may not cook as well as a 2.
I think there some happy middle ground in each, well.............maybe one of them.

;)

I hate the Axis as well as the RAR, 783 and XPR. It has nothing to do with accuracy and value. I can’t stand the look, feel, blade triggers, DBM and tiny ejection ports. I have a hard time understanding why anyone would own one unless it was out of necessity. I also think they are great for the people who like them. It’s okay to like them and it’s okay to hate them.

Lotta truth there lol

I wouldn't take one for free but I'm not going to judge anyone. If its the best you can do and it works for you, more power too you.

In my circle of car friends the accords a classic!
Yes we were ricers........

Jus uh lil!
So McGowen wsm in an at-1.....trigger love, decent scope and your ricer will ALMOST be something you won't wanna get rid of when one of your buddies tries to take it off your hands.......;)

I like the previous suggestions for a .358 Win. Hornady still makes the brass, or just neck up 308.

Or how about a .30 BR? Get a 1:17 twist and sling 30 cal 110g bullets at 3,400 fps for fun and very little profit

That an offer? :p

And you've still got a .250AI to collect

30br sounds like a really neat option for goat plinking, liiiiiitle short for a full length 06 action tho lol.

I want a blr, or 7600 in .358. I read an old gunrag article about a (I think) 400 whelen 7600, and that's always been in the back of my mind as well lol.

Im also now the proud owner of a Savage magnum bolt head, for 15 bucks off eBay.....

I forgot about .270 Redding this morning. .308 body with that accursed .277 bore.

Something that might be fun, get it in .300 Savage or 7.62 (.308)x39 with a fast twist. Thread the muzzle...just for looks of course;). Come to think of it, .270 Redding might be a lot of fun with a fast twist, light charge of the appropriate powder and a big 'ol cruise missile of a slug too.
