For everyone else's benefit, it's been pointed out that the gun has a huge advantage over knives and swords and spears at distance. All of them are deadly weapons when they are used within their effective ranges. The discussion is valuable when you put them in the same effective range.
Will a .22 kill you? Will a small knife? Both will with the right "placement".
Things get interesting when you pit a determined individual against a slightly less determined individual. If the guy with the gun is slightly taken aback by a vicious attack by someone with a knife there may not come the chance to shoot the guy with the knife. If the guy with the knife is taken aback by a vicious attack by someone with a gun there may not come the chance to stab/slash the guy with the gun. Much depends on the determination of the attacker, viciousness of the attack, who hesitates first/most, the size of the weapon and the skill with the weapon. A hotshot punk with a knife may be taken out by a skilled person with a broomstick who is determined and ruthless to the point of viciousness. A hotshot with a gun may fall prey to the same.
Immediate, commited, vicious force applied with skill regardless of weapon will more likely lead to survival than dependance on a single "superior" weapon.
