I carry my government model with an 8rd power mag and one in pipe. 2- 10 rd power mags in a carrier. I also keep an 870 in my truck.

My P-32 is usually in the hidden pocket of my coat such that I forget about it and wind up carrying a bigger gun elsewhere as well. If I ever need it I certainly hope I remember it's there...

I think firearm retention is as important as having it to begin with. Carrying multiple guns when your unlikely to even need one just increases your chance to lose one or have multiple locations on your body that have to be guarded and watched for proper retention. If your a LEO it makes sense. If your primary gun may fail to function or is in a holster getting wet or subject to weathering sure. To just carry multiple guns just to do it is increasing your risk of loss due to a failure with a holster or the amount of places someone else can arm themselves by grabbing on your person.

I carry two firearms on and off duty. A 1911 (Colt Series MK IV 70 off duty, Kimber Warrior on duty) and a SW Model 36 J frame. The J frame is always in my pocket. I dont normally carry the Colt around the house, but if I leave the house, I have it.

I carry one spare magazine off duty and three spare mags and a Bianchi speed strip for the J frame on duty.

I have a 9mm Sig, and I think that it is reliable enough that I would never need a back-up, and that carrying a spare 15rd magazine would be a better alternative to a spare gun. However, other people may be in different situations than me(or maybe they don't carry as reliable of weapons:)

Aryfrosty- I'm not bashing at all, just curious, but why do you feel the need to carry 6 spare magazines? All I can imagine is because of the low capacity, but wouldn't a weapon with a higher mag cap be a better idea than carrying all those magazines? Like I said I'm just curious and interested, and am in no way trying to bash this practice.

Always the 3AT in the righthand front pocket. Always. Carrying at desk job, Kahr P9 IWB. Chores around the place, Ruger Mark III .22/45 in a Maverick IWB from Dillon that will also clip into the side vent of my Carhartt bib overalls. Yeah, I know, I'm from Wyoming. On the road, GLock 23 with two spare mags in Fobus paddle rigs.

Cousin Mike,

I don't think we need to go into what's reasonable and what's not. If someone really feels the need to carry all that hardware and wants to put up with the inconvenience, that's his business.

It took me a long time to come up with the combination I carry now. I tried all kinds of alternatives and found that this fits my dress and lifestyle the best. What works for me may not work for anyone else.

On duty I carry 2 less lethal force options, OC and an ASP baton. I don't carry any less lethal options off duty. I do carry a Surefire C2 Centurian off duty.

What I carry is a solution...not THE solution.

BUGs and spares

reconNinja; I don't mind the question. It's a fair one. One reason, as you thought5, is that they are 5 rounders. I separate them to carry...I generally have one in my weak side front trous pocket; 2 in my Carrhart coat left pocket, and 2 in the right pocket. Then I have two in the console of my car. I am not as likely to get in a place where I need mucho spares...but if I do all of the LE in my area carries .40S&W and I wouldn't have extra ammo except for what I have. My years in a patrol car were spent in Appalachia and I realized back about 1971 that all my back-up was on my hip if I got stuck into it at 0-dark-30. My wife sewed a couple of long watch pockets in my caot pockets so the I can carry mags without them banging the fooey out of each other every time I get out of the car.

I will carry an AMT 380 backup or Keltec P3AT in my backpocket etc. Just in case. One reason for a backpocket carry is if reaching for a regular sidearm is iffy you may be able to sneak out a little pocket gun with out notice.
I also in cold weather frequently carry a 38 snubnose in a coat pocket. I still have a large caliber semiauto on my belt but it's harder to get to in cold weather. I can walk around with my hand on the grip of the 38 and nobody will ever be the wiser. Makes it really handy for walking across a restaraunt parking lot after the sunsets. Oh yeah... and don't forget a good quality light like a surefire. They can be worth their weight in gold sometimes.

To thexrayboy;
You are absolutely right about having a good light close to hand. Mine started as a Surefire G-2Z and I added a 3 watt LED head and a click on/ off talicap. Made one up just like it for my Marine son. I also have a Benchmade "big-black-ugly" folding knife. I used to wrry over if I was paranoid...but the uses for such gear are many.

I voted one gun,but do sometimes carry a J frame 357 as well as the G19.

I only carry a snub......
for now.
I want a full size 1911 for iwb, and snub for my pocket - I like the idea of having my hand on my gun with no recourse to my action.

I just carry a titanium snub-nose .38 and frankly feel a little silly carrying that sometimes. I am not an LEO and in the extremely unlikely scenario that I would actually have to draw my weapon, it is even more unlikely that I will have to fire it, and even MORE unlikely that the revolver would jam or I would for any other reason need a BUG! I would bet that it is statistically as likely that something from space would fall on my head and I don't see everyone walking around with hardhats! I think that guys (non LEO's) who pack "3 guns and a tactical knife" are enjoying the packing/macho feeling and are trying to rationalize it so that they don't feel silly. Whatever floats your boat though!

Border,
Why do you carry a gun at all?

For me, I rather enjoy the super concealability of a snub (scandium/titanium),
but I love the accuracy/capacity of a full size 1911. Just me, but I would like the best of BOTH worlds...
And, I completely agree with you, probably would never use it, like i would never use my seatbelt....

BUGs and spares

Border; I also really like my little Scandium/ Titanium .38spl. But I want to share a story with you. when I got mine I immediately bought some Ajax Pearlite grips...found the lightest .38spls I could and went to the range. With 95 gr bullets it was a royal monster. The first round shattered the grips and cut the fooey out of my thumb. I went rapidly back to the rubber grips it came with. It's still a monster, but now it's a manageable one. I also have a
2" Titanium Taurus in .45 Colt. It still has the factory rubber "Grippers" and it will always have them. They're the best in the world to carry, but they're rough on the ego when touched off. And, don't ever feel silly for carrying. I'D feel silly if one of the street monsters came calling and I didn't have something to greet them with.:D
Regards

If we could carry I would probably carry a BUG if I felt the need. I would use my P2000 as a primary and my P2000sk as a BUG.

I feel that having the ability to use the same magazines in both guns is a huge advantage. Similiar to the Glock 17 and Glock 26. It just makes sense to me.

Tecumseh,
Good luck using the P2000SK mag in your P2000 :p (Isn't it too short???)

I carry H&K P2000 .40S&W, 1 in chamber + 12 in mag. That's it. I put A LOT of ammo through it, and not a single mulfunction (excepth one time wolf cartridge cracked... bad ammo, never hapened with anything else). I just feel like 13 rounds should be enough.

ALTHOUGH...

I'm about to get KAHR MK9 for front/back pocket carry. So that brings me down to 6+1, at what point I will probably start to carry a second mag. Also, I will probably not carry the P2000 anymore, unless weather permits I put on a long jacket or something simillar... which, frankly, i don't see happening anytime soon given the Ft. Lauderdale weather :D :D :D

BUGs and spares

armedpolak;
About a year back I bought a Kahr 8mm. IMHO it's one of the highest quality pistols I've handled, but I kept it a week and went back and traded it. It was just too bulky/heavy for a pocket holster. As a suggestion only: If you get a Kahe get the polymer framed one. Having said that the steel framed Kahr is a joy to shoot.:)

Back in the days when I wore a badge & uniform, my primary came out of it's holster landing at the feet of the three suspects with their hands up, I did not carry a BUG back then but had a partner that looked as mean (and ugly) as Frankenstein. Lucky me. That's when I got into the habit of a BUG and do so today even though I am just a civilian, or especially since I am a civillian; since there is no backup officer to keep me covered in case Father Murphy comes a'visitin. Just a quick reply to those who believe that LEO's have more need of a BUG than civillians.

I sometimes carry a NAA .22 revolver as a bug, or even as primary when nothing else will do... but carrying a BUG is extremely rare for me.
