I've never carried more than one gun. That doesn't mean I don't have other weapons on me. I always carry two knives (one in each front pocket) and a surefire flashlight.

I haven't carried two guns regularly since I worked the streets of Boston and Providence. Usually two gov45's at that time. Never without the one SA I have had since 82.

One with reloads is sufficient 99% of the time as civilians. My bug would be a P32 or Jframe 5 shot, neither of which is going to be as fast into action as a reload for me.

Nowadays its a SA Champion LW, the SA gov from 82, or a glock 17, glock 26, all dependant on the heat out here. Toady it's the SA LW Champion with two reloads for a total of 23 rds available.

I carry a P226 9mm with 2 reloads. I've tried carrying 2 guns at a time (p220 .45 and a Browning BDA380), but it really wasn't for me. I don't remember what article it was I read this in, but I once heard that it's not good to have too many options. When a situation arrises that requires deadly force, the article said that it was best to instantly know what to reach for, not to take an extra half a second choosing which gun would be best suited for the job. Now I don't know if I completely agree with that article, but I figure it's good food for thought.

I have, however, been considering getting a very small backup piece. I think it would be nice to have a little keltec P3AT or something like that, just in case. It makes a nice little pistol for a few things. I read a post on this forum once about how the writer had encountered a drug dealer and almost had a situation, but kept his cool, because unbeknownst to the dealer, one of his his hands in his jacket pockets was holding a beretta tomcat. It would be nice to have the comfort of knowing I had some firepower in my hand, and that isn't really possible (without it being obvious) with a P226.

Another thing that got me thinking about getting a small pistol is an article I read once in a gun magazine that pointed out the fact that a pistol worn on your hip is very hard to get to when buckled into a car. The article noted that while it is very difficult to get to a boot gun when standing, it is relatively easy to get to one when seated in a car. I was sold. So as soon as I have a few hundred laying around (can't spend that much money without explaining it to the girlfriend) I'll probably pick up a little pocket pistol.

Last thing I just thought of is this: what if the "SHTF" and you need your friend to cover you? (kind of a wild "what if" situation, but bear with me) Wouldn't it be nice to be able to hand them a weapon to do so with? Just a thought. I'm not big on other people touching my guns so this would probably not happen, but it would be really nice to have someone covering my back. Let's say for example (again, weird hypothetical, but hear me out) I'm in my room and I hear someone kicking down the front door. I can hand my backup gun to my girlfriend and tell her to protect herself if anyone but me comes through the bedroom door, and then go out to investigate. No trip to the safe, no having to leave guns laying around, it's right there, and ready to use.

Just a thought.

Two ways to think about this. If one bad thing can happen, (you have to actually use your gun,) TWO bad things can happen. (You could need another.) But the likelihood of needing one is remote. Two is truly redundant. Rule number one of surviving a gunfight is to have a gun.

I'm not superstitious about kids and guns, but I have four kids, and it's a full-time job to maintain accountability of one gun. Two or more would make life even more complicated.

As the kids get older, I could see keeping more guns in fixed places in the home and car, but not while I still have kids crawling around in the home and car.

2 at minimum

I prefer 2 of the same make and caliber (i.e G17 & G19C), plus 1 or 2 bugs.

BUGs and spares

mljdeckard;
I agree with your analysis of safety issues. All of ours are grown now, but we still have to tighten up because of grandkids coming around. One solution I've used is to keep a pair of the small handgun safes...the steel boxes with touchpad locks...in the house. You can pick a place and fasten them in place. Diligence is the price we have to pay for security...and it's worth it.

I have never attempted to carry two handguns at once.
I like guns. I like shooting them, reading about them, BSing about them, and owning them.
Carrying them, however, can sometimes be a chore.
When I carry it is something like my P9 or the Makarov in a jacket pocket. If I needed to carry two guns I would just grab a semiautomatic rifle and ventilate the whole area before I decided to go there.

Normaly i carry two usualy a kahr p9 and a kahr pm9 . I farm and ranch so it works out that the p9 is normaly stoked with cheap ball practice ammo to plink and shoot vermin with , and the pm 9 is stoked with +p corbons to shoot bigger vermin with . For me packing two small guns is easyer than shuffeling loadings before i head back to town , and with the two kahrs i get mag interchangability should i need to reload .

75% of the time, a Steyr 9mm on the belt. 75% of the time, a Rohrbaugh 9mm in my pocket. Obviously, there's some overlap. Usually have one reload for whatever I'm carrying.

Why? Well, an autoloader can jam. I can be in a situation where I can reach one inconspicously, but not the other. The R9 is more or less forgotten in my pocket, so it is almost always there (probably more like 90% of the time, come to think of it). But I like having the extra rounds of the Steyr (not to mention sights), so carry that when I can do so easily.

I'm not expecting to be in WWIII. But I figure if I'm in a situation where I need a gun, having an extra would be a good thing.

Normally one handgun and two reloads on my person, with two more mags in the vehicle. Occasionally another gun in the car, and two mags to go with it.

Its not often that I carry a BUG in addition to my primary sidearm, but it does happen on occasoin. I dont normally carry reloads for my BUG.

I feel pretty good with one gun, if I can carry it IWB or OWB in a reasonably fast access way.

In the summer however, my primary carry, 3" 1911, has to go tucked in under my shirt. I think this is too slow a draw for a lot of situations, so I will drop a j-frame in the front pocket. So I have big firepower if I have time to access it, and I have lesser firepower in a big hurry. So in the summer, it's almost always two guns, unless I'm feeling really lazy, in which case it's just the j-frame.

I'll carry a reload if carrying a sinlge gun, but no reloads when carrying two.

What I currently carry is

A G23 on right hip IWB and a spare mag for that on left hip. I always have a skeletonized Buck knife clipped in right front pocket. I practice getting that out and ready more often than I practice drawing my gun. If I am wearing a Jacket I have small, bright flaslight in left pocket. My cell phone is on a belt clip just right of center in a horizontal position so that it is comfortable when sitting. Again, when wearing a jacket my right hand pocket is available for a spare like my S&W 36 or I could switch the flashlight to the right pocket, thus allowing for a weak hand draw. I want to carry a second gun for a couple of reasons. The first, and best I think, is for a weak hand draw. I have become quite comfortable shooting with my left hand as a result of a lot of Cowboy action shooting and I can see a real world use for this skill. I was thinking of buying a G27 and an allessi rig for my left ankle and may well do that yet but I would rather have my bug on my waist. In addition to my my G23 I own a 32 in 357 sig as well and I was thinking about putting that in an SOB holster or maybe in an OWB on my left side. If I do that I will more than likely get a 40 barrel for it.

I'm not surprised that some carry only one gun, I myself do it about half the time, but I'm really surprised to hear that some carry just one gun, but carry no reloads. I know we all fantacize that if the SHTF, we'll place our rounds with precision exactly where we are aiming, but gunfight accounts I've read involving real situations tell me otherwise.

I'm really surprised to hear that some carry just one gun, but carry no reloads.

That surprises me too... I figured everyone carried a reload or two...

Someone told me that the reason he carried a spare is because not only might he need a reload, but that over half of all gun failures are magazine-related failures. Since then I figure carrying a reload is not only "tactically sound," but probably a good idea incase of a failure of some sort. To each his own.

Since starting this thread, my carry setup has changed. I'm no longer lugging around the SIGs. The day after Christmas I bought a Glock 33 (.357SIG), a Fobus (kydex) mag holder, and an el-cheapo ambidextrous Glock brand holster until I find a nice IWB setup for warmer weather. Glock on the right hip, mag holder on the left hip... I've never known such CCW-bliss. :D

Carrying a small Glock (or any small gun) is a whole different ball game from carrying a full-sized 1911 or SIG. I don't see how I did it for all this time. Even with the mag holder and reloads, it almost feels like I'm wearing nothing. With the SIG, I always knew I was carrying, even if it wasn't extraordinarily uncomfortable. With the Glock setup, I don't even need a gun belt. A plain old leather belt is more than enough. With the gun being so light, the 2 mags on my opposite hip provide a balance I've never had before... Life is good. :)

Oh, BTW, I still carry 2 reloads, for a total of 28 rounds of .357SIG 125gr. Speer Gold Dot HP's.
