I'm not sure if you're soliciting advice from guides or what?
I'm not a guide, but I think the .300 is a niche rifle for long range shooting - goats, sheep, perhaps caribou. For anything else, the 30.06 will do it with less recoil.

There is no reason for a guide to carry a gun for "back up" shooting in the lower 48 of the USA. In fact it's illegal in most circumstances. I carried a hand gun when I was guiding just in case I had to shoot a horse or maybe signal and of course when hunting bear and lion in case I had to shoot a bear or a lion off of a client (which never happened BTW).
If I was hunting big game and my guide showed up with a CF rifle to back me up on an elk or a deer or a sheep or whatever hunt. I'd fire him on the spot. He had better not be shooting at my critter not to mention that he'd be hunting without a license if he did.
So if you are asking what is the better choice for a back up gun I'd have to say none of the above. A guide in the lower 48 should not be carrying a rifle at all.
Now if you are asking what is the best rifle to shoot a hunting guide with; if it was me you were going to shoot I'd recommend the .300 WM . Because you are going to need to be a LOOOOOONG way away if you don't kill me on the first shot!

Just my opinion. The 30-06 does anything you need a 30 cal. bullet to do. The 300 mags only give you about 50 more yards of usable range. I think there are better long range options. If you need more power than the 30-06 offers for larger game, you need something in a much larger caliber.

I'm not sure he meant a backup in the sense one thinks of for dangerous game. He may have meant backup in the sense of extra, i.e. a an extra rifle taken to camp lest some ill fortune render the someones weapon inoperable in the back country, two days horse ride from where another could be found.
I do not know what he meant but that was what struck me as his probable meaning.

Yeah I kinda thought he meant extra as well, like if he dropped his scope or something he'd have another rifle at camp. Or I guess he could make the guide mule it around for him, though I'm not sure the guide would be up for it. I know if I paid money for a guided hunt and the guide shot my animal I would be PISSED!
As far as advice, not sure what to say. You have both, like both, they'll both kill stuff... use whichever one you want. I'd bring them both as well.

.Well you are on the money MR H and H I carry them I case of a malfunction I would never deprive a hunter of a good hunt I am like you in the sense that I was having fun with this I think both cartridges work well. I personally favor the 30-06 just personal preference than you all for the feedback

Okay since we are just having fun let's just give er hell. I have been a guide for over ten yrs not one year and then decide that one year of guiding and reading books and magazine articles suddenly makes me an expert on all hunting and shooting the reality is that most of the know it allls in here are more likely to have read the info they post in some magazine be leary of the *******s that can quote you all the info you need probably some fat ass that sits behind a desk all day long reading hunting info and passing it off as his own
I am very glad and able to say that I have actually done the hunting and lived it I own from a 22 LR through 375 ruger and I can proudly say I have used them all and by. The grace of god and practice I have been successful so before you open your big mouth let it be known there are folks out there that actually do the hunting for a living. They didnlt read it in some bbok

I worked up an '06 which shot sub-moa and didn't seem to have any trouble with one-shot Bambi kills at 350 and 450, dropped in their tracks. That's only two out of somewhere around fifty deer, but if an '06 will work at those distances, I have little interest in any .30 magnum in the lower US.
Nothing at all wrong with a .300 Win Mag, but I don't see anything to excite me and get my little old heart to palpitating uncontrollably.
Out of curiosity, if I take newbies out and show them where to go and walk or sit and all that and they catch deer, does that make me a guide? I can do camp-cooking and mess with horses and all that. If longevity counts, that's somewhere around forty-five years. (Gotta watch out for those Olde Pharts.)
Never got paid, though.

I think you have to love the guide game I have made many new friends and yes the pay could be better and like you I do a lot more cooking and helping out hunters but I really enjoy the experience
