I don't believe the seller lied intentionally to increase value. I believe he was uninformed. (when I asked him his opinion on shooting steel cased ammo, he said there isn't any around and no steel cased current production that he's aware of)
 
But issued or not, my main concerns were the import stamp (which it doesn't have), the condition of the rifle overall (superb), and the condition of the bore (excellent)
 
The only flaw I've found from this rifle is that i can tell the rifling in the crown is a little worn down. It doesnt seem to be as prominent as further down the barrel. Should this be a concern?

The M1 isn't a tack driver. A damaged crown will hurt accuracy.
 
Here is a test I did with a 30-06. Granted it wasn't the usgi ball round that people us, it was remington core lokt... the end of the barrel measure 1/8" to the brass
