That is not always true, the serial numbers for guns from a special run are not in the list of factory revolvers.

Any additional info on your gun will help. Product Code?
The serial # is definitely BOR. If I knew how, I would send a picture.
I think the product code is on the box, right? And I don’t have the box. I bought the gun used and it didn’t have a box.

Thanks for your help and the information. You gentlemen provide a great service.

You can write S&W and they will provide the date but not much more unless it's part of a special run. Then they will tell you who contracted the run.

I wish I could be more of a help, sorry.

I just emailed S&W and they got back with me in about 4 days with the date on mine.

Don't see AJZ listed, but would guess late 1985 or early 1986. AJs, AJT and AJW all show 1986. Dash 1 was introduced in 1986 so that should get you close.

Thanks Eddietruett for your time, this web forum is a great resource.
I've owned it since new, but, couldn't remember the exact year.
Gettin' old :-|

Model 48. Couldn't find AAN but AAM was 1983 so I would say 1983
Model 19 1980
The serial numbers don't work like that. It's possible similar serial numbers were released near the same dates but most times not. Like I said befire, if that series of numbers were issued to a special run of guns they will not be listed in the factory numbers. Luckily this revolver is a factory gun so I can help.
S&W48-4
6" barrel
sq butt
AAN16xx

Your M48 left S&W in 1987, not 1983.

According to the SW Catalog 4th edition, the Model 48 was discontinued in 1986

Since you have the SCSW #4 I checked in that book. My mistake, I mixed up ANN with AAN and came up with 1987. That brings us back to the possibility of a special run but there doesn't seem to be any reference to a special run.

And sometimes even using the Catalog, it is a guess. I've found the Catalog wrong before as well. I had a gun that lettered and by using the catalog, I would have been off by at least a year. Smith shipped in such a confusing pattern, that serial numbers are a guess

Thank you, one more

B)4"
C)Square
D)6 shot

1993 and there is no way that I know of to find out what organization used it. Even if you were to get a Factory letter, it would only tell you which distributor it was shipped to. Only way back, did S&W ship directly to Police Agencies. All Agencies now days and for a long time have purchased their guns through a distributor. It the agency is not stamped on the gun frame, then it is only a guess
