a) .38 Special
b) 2 inch (pinned barrel)
c) Round butt
d) 5 shot
e) Fixed sights
f) R1618##
g) Model 60 (no dash)

R100000-190000 produced from 1974-1977
I would guess yours is from somewhere in 1976
That's as close as I can get with the S&W Catalog 4th edition

Didn't see where ArchAngelCD had already posed the date. Apology for the double post

a) .22 LR
b) 4"
c) square
d) 6
e) adjustable
f) 230xxx
g) No model number under the crane. This is a 5-screw K-frame, pre-18 K22 Combat Masterpiece.

Just bought this. Based on some initial research, I believe it is a 1954 model. Sure would like someone to confirm or let me know if I'm wrong on that.

If there is a "K" in front the numbers you are correct, 1954.

Checking on two old ones.

S&W M1917, commercial, V269175

and

S&W Heavy Duty, (pre model 20), S78132

Thank you

Kevin

The Heavy Duty left S&W in 1950

The M1917 is a little more difficult. My sources do not run them by each year. Here is what I have:
1942 - 1945 V1 - V811119 so a good guess would be 1943 but since we have no way of knowing how many were produced each year it's only a guess. Sorry.

UPDATE

The serial # for the 1917 is 178748. Sorry for the confusion. I believe the answer will be similar, not enough data to pin down a year?

This going to be a thread for those who are looking for a date of manufacture for their S&W revolvers.

We'd need to know :

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

A picture or two is worth A LOT of words in this case...

I have a S&W 38 spl model 64-2 I was told it was a round butt it has different grips now. it was a 2" barrel but was changed out to a 4" by S&W I have paper work for that and still have 2" barrel the serial No. Is AYD1690 fixed sights 6 shot I am uploading some pics can you tell me what year it was manufactured and anything else you know about this gun. I was told it is a California Department of Corrections issue the guy I bought it from claimed to work for them for 35 years.

Thanks
Gary

The 3 Letter prefix can be tricky but yours is probably 1988. It shows AYC and AYE both shipping in 1988 so I suspect yours was too

Actually that revolver was shipped in 1977. The M64-2 was only produced in 1977 even if it wasn't made for the California DOC. The serial number on the side of the revolver is the correct serial # for your revolver. It supersedes the one on the butt from what I'm told. The CDC prefix is for California Dept. of Corrections.

Like I said above, the Model 64-2 was only shipped in 1977. You actually got lucky because in 1977 they also produced the M64-3 without a pinned barrel. Nice revolver.

Wow that is great to know everyone else said it was late 80s so they made it with a threaded barrel in 1977? everyone says they were pinned up to 1982.

Can you tell me your source on that I would love to research that some more.
Have a great day &
Thanks for the info,
GW

I'm guessing the serial number on the Butt of the Gun is BDR and not BOR prefix? If so, your gun was shipped in 1989.
I can find no reference for the prefix of BOR. I don't think Smith ever used O in a prefix as it would be easy to mix up with zero

That is not always true, the serial numbers for guns from a special run are not in the list of factory revolvers.

Any additional info on your gun will help. Product Code?
