Hey guys.

I have a bad case of Rifle Itch, since I have a few handguns. I had the pleasure of shoooting an AR-15 this weekend, and I love the .223 round.

Since I live in CA, I cannot have an ar-15. Bummer.

While walking out of the range, I spotted a Kel-Tec SU-16CA. I instantly liked the looks of the gun. I picked it up, it felt good in my hands.

After reading a few reviews, I think I want (need) to buy this rifle.

But, of course, I wanted the opinions of the members here first.

Alternative suggestions? Problems? Absolute hate?

I have one, and it friggin rawks. Search for my review!
SU-16C(A) .223, 100 yards, 55gr Winchester supreme.

well, as far as a "black rifle" is concerned, that's pretty much all you can have out here. unless you spring for an AR with the fixed magazine...those don't really float my boat though.

alternatives:
SKS
M1A
M1 Carbine
Mini 14 or Mini 30

I'm happy with mine. Thanks to Kel-tec for their great ingenuity. This rifle slaps the CA assault weapons ban in the face. Course the pre-ban mags help me have twenty extra rounds of fun. So what, no pistol grip. Rifle is light, manueverable, cool mods, good accuracy, folds for transport, integral rail, etc.

Check 'er out.

Oooooooo....what mag is that? Daddy liiiiikes..

Kace, that's a very nice group - wish you hadn't posted that; now I want one more. Only thing I don't like about them is the general 'flimsiness' of the rifle, and particularly the bipod.

Keep the bipod in then, it feels just as solid as my AK when its all "zipped up".

right now i'm torn between a su-16ca and a usgi underwood m1 carbine. of course .223 is a far better round and cheaper to feed, but i can't get myself over the beautiful combo of wood and steel, as well as the legacy and overall cool factor of the m1 carbine.

Now I want one more. Thank pete for christmas bonuses.

Where do I find accessories for it?

The weaver rail accepts pretty much anything you want, it takes AR magazines, some(not all versions) have a threaded barrel to accept any AR muzzlebrakes or flash supressors.

I'm debating if I wanna try and turn my trunk/coyote/hiking/fun SU into a trunk/coyote/hiking/fun/urban sniper platform. Its accurate enough for sure.

I have long pondered the "EBR/Battle rifle in CA" dilemma.

After several years of considering my options (I've mostly been into handguns) I now have an M1A Scout Squad (shorter bbl than standard) on its way to me. :)

I recommend you do the same and here's why:

- More powerful round

- The M1A is a war-proven, real honest-to-God War/Battle Rifle.

- It is also a great range toy, in addition to being a real war weapon.

- Spare parts, accessories, etc. are very plentiful, as is general knowledge, armorer's manuals, etc. Highly doubt an armorer's manual exists for the Kel-Tec.

- The history of the M1A as a real battle rifle.

- M1A is much more customizable. Want a wood stock? Done. Synthetic? Here you go. Paint it any way you want? Go for it! Want to accurize it for competitions? Ok! Standard barrel length? Great! Shorter bbl for easier handling? Done! Mount a scope/optic on it? Sure! Want a REAL bipod? Slap on a Harris!

Don't think you can do any of that with the Kel-Tec.

From all I've read the KelTec seems to be a fine gun, though it seems prudent to limit it to "range toy" status seeing as how its never been proven in any sort of a combat situation and is such a new firearm.

If you are OK with that and don't care much whether you own a true SHTF/battle rifle, get the Kel-Tec.

Otherwise, definitely get the M1A. It is the best of both worlds: a real weapon that also happens to be fun on the range.

Surplus ammo is about the same cost for .308 and .223. .223 is probably going to be what, $20-40 cheaper per 1K rounds? Big deal......

That's my opinion, since you asked for it. :)

Keep us posted on what you decide and enjoy it!:D

The problem with the M1 and it's variants is the price. At least that's what keeps me away from it.

But I think the benefits of the M1A over the Kel-Tec easily justifies the extra cost.

The M1A is definitely a fine rifle, however at $1600 it's also three times the price. I'd recommend the SU-16 as well, it would be a nice way of getting your feet wet in the rifle world and still have a very capable weapon.

I'm looking into one myself, but thankfully where I live I can get the folding stock SU-16C!

That is full retail. Hopefully nobody pays that!

I can get a NIB Scout Squad from my FFL here in CA for $1400.00 out the door, tax, fees, everything.

I just got one 99% new for $1135 shipped, going to be $1180 or so out the door.

here in Texas

in Austin, try Cost Plus 10% gun shop for the kel tec. He was able awhile back to order some for around $415. 512-302-3826

Justified or not sometimes people just flat out don't have that kind of money and it's either a KT, Mini14, SKS or nothing. The M1 is not an option for some.

I got my C for 390 bucks. The cheapest I've seen a NIB M1A for is 1100.

Its unfair, and darn near unethical to compare a 400 dollar rifle with one that costs over a grand.

How much do you need to spend on an M1A to get sub moa groups? Most M1As I've seen are like 2.5+ which aint bad for a battle rifle.

Thats -A GRAND- ontop of the cost of an SU-16. If I spent a THOUSAND DOLLARS on an SU-16 it'd do everything a M1A could do and it'd make me coffee too!

True that it is not a fair comparison, but the author asked for ideas/opinions on rifles in CA.

I simply offered my opinion. :)

That was one of my points: I don't think that you can make a Kel-Tec do half the stuff an M1A can do.
