Kel Tec SU-16CA

Accuracy: 20 out of 20 on 6" at 50 yards. Iron sights, NO SIGHTING IN, just straight out of the box.
Ammo used: 5 year old Wolf .223 HP, Hornady TAP (just to get a group on paper, none were used on 6" swinger), S&B Green Tip.
Weight: Superlight
Recoil: Friendly
Jams: 4x Wolf steel case got caught between bolt and end of ejection port. This is probably caused by the spring being still VERY strong? Nothing bad, just standard rack & tap to clear. WARNING: DO NOT LET HOT ROUNDS TOUCH THE PLASTIC FOR TOO LONG, IT -WILL- BEGIN TO MELT IT.

THOUGHTS: Best thing we've got here in CA in terms of a lightweight intermediate rifle that can do multiple duties. SHTF, Survival, Plinking, Posing in the Mirror

Current config:
SU-16CA $525
Compact Fore-end $45
Compact sling swivel, rings $25
K-T sling $15
20rnd AR15 COLT mag: Grandfathered
20rnd CProducts / OKAY INDUS. mag: Rebuilt from damaged grandfathered magazine
Weaver (R) Rings: $20
Barska SKS Rangefinding 4x25 scope: $80
DPMS Whisper Compensator: $25
DPMS Crush Washer $2

I love this rifle!

Nice rifle, I've had much improved accuracy with mine using 52gr. Black Hills Moly HP ammo, but it doesn't seem to be available any more, picked up some of their 67 gr. Moly to give it a try.

They are nice guns, but for the price, the AR15 is still king. I just can't get used to the "hardware store" look of the nuts, bolts and screw heads on the Kel-Tec's. However, this is coming from a guy living in a non-commie occupied state. In Cali, I bet the Kel Tec's are king.:)

I wish Kel-Tec would make a "Deluxe" version (or something) with wood furniture and steel receiver. It'd be expensive as hell, though. :(

as much as i love the Su-16 as it is, some more stock options would be nice. maybe even different colors.

well

I owned from 1998 - 2005 (RIP ar15.. sob*) an xm15e2s bushie.

I now own an su16.

To compare the two is unfair to both. One is solid, accurate, and heavy.

The other is tough, accurate, and lightweight.

I love both guns.

Now if Kel-Tec made an SU-16CA with mil-spec aluminum receiver and a military polymer stock?

I can tell you right away that I would pay $1500 for that rifle.

I never knew U could take off the front part with that folding bipod and replace it - that looks pretty kewl.

mosin

The Mosin FP gage / tool is bar none the best gunsmithing screwdriver I've ever owned in my life. Unlike american flat tips the Mosin flat tip is VERY narrow and fits into even the most commie of screws.

Running a close second is its bayonet. Seriously. It's hard to beat that kind of torque.

Thanks for the kudos on the SU-16, I like it a lot myself. The Barska SKS Electro Rangefinding 4x is REALLY nice too; I feel like I got a 300$ scope for the 80 I spent. The reticle is glass etched, and really really feels good.

Now I need to figure out how to use a military rangefinding scope... =P

^^
Is it a mil-dot?

One mil (milliradian) translates to almost exactly 3.6" at 100yd.

More usefully (and this is probably why so many scopes have 5mil spacing), 5mil translations to 18" at 100yd.

I just got mine on Saturday- I'm quite pleased with it as well. It's lightweight, handles well, and has been a great shooter so far. I would have taken an AR-15 if I had the option, but for California, the Kel-Tec is an excellent choice.

I like the CA model. May get one and paint the black plastic stocks and foreend to brown for that even less evil look. Sarah Brady would be so proud!

I know, I may be able to find an AR for a few hundred or so more, but I don't want or even particularly like ARs and don't really want the ubertactical look. A mini would be ok except that I hate Ruger and have never heard much good about the rifle anywya.

Beside, I would like to have something that would eat my .223 from my AR mags that I have lying around.

A friend, a weapons instructor, has a Keltec that eats from Beretta mags and he thinks it's the bees knees even though he typically uses much more pricey H&K toys.

When you say "mil-spec" that implies a military specification for the rifle. I can however find a milspec for almost any material you choose. MIM alumninum, yep, injection molded polymers, yep.

You won't see military build plans which detail mil-spec materials for the KelTec as it's not a procurable item.

I wish Kel-Tec would make a "Deluxe" version (or something) with wood furniture and steel receiver. It'd be expensive as hell, though.

Oh tell me about it. I like the light weight and low production cost of the polymer model, but I much prefer metal to tupperware on my firearms. A wood and metal version would be quite sweet indeed. Even though I live in a free state now, if they came out with a wood furniture, metal receiver version of the CA model, I might just have to buy it.

A nice bone to throw to us in the mean time would be FDE/Coyote or OD Green Furniture.

About the only thing I don't like about the design is the lack of ability to do breech side cleaning with a rod.

If you were to pay for the set up fees and ship a firearm to them Boyds may be willing to make one for you. They have machines that can turn out just about anything.

It would probably make it a very expensive rifle but work a deal so that you get some recompense for every stock they make until the set up fees are paid and you might cover the setup fee if there's demand for them.
