I'm a huge fan of the Ruger PC carbines. Both the old models and the new models. I have one of each of the old models, 9mm and 40 S&W. I have numerous of the new Takedown models in 9mm, but I missed out on the 40 S&W Takedown during the short time it was produced. I've been keeping an eye out for one ever since. They occasionally show up on Gunbroker, but seem to always go for well over $1k.

I travel a lot for work and have a list of pawn shops I stop in and check when passing through. This week I'm in Montana (Woooo. No sales tax.) and I stop by one of the shops on my list. Going in, I scan the used gun rack. I see some deals, but nothing I'm really looking for. At the end I see a pair of Ruger PC Takedowns. Not expecting much, I ask the clerk if either of them were 40 S&W.

Clerk: "Yea, this one is a 40."
Me: "Oh, could I take a look at it please?" (The expression I'm hiding from the clerk =)

Looking it over, it's basically brand new. No box, but it has the mag adapter, several glock mags, and a backpack takedown case. Plus a cheesey flashlight on a loose mount.

The best part? It was priced similar to a PC-9 ! :what: There must have been no PC-40s on gunbroker when they priced it, so they just slapped on a similar price as a used PC-9, charging slightly more for the case and mags.

Needless to say, that PC-40 now belongs to me. I can't wait to take it out this weekend. Serial number search says it was made in 2019.

So yea. Still excited and decided to show off. :D

Very cool deal!

I am not trying to raise any grief here but I didn't think it was legal to buy a gun in a different state and drive it across the border into your state of residence??? If it is not I am not going to tell anyone I am more curious for personal interests. I live in OR close to the border with ID.

P.S. I love my PC9 and PC9 charger! I don't really have a need for a PC carbine in .40 S&W but I would imagine that the higher pressure of the 40 S&W will make a lot better use of the longer barrel length than 9mm ever could. I imaging the PC 40 should pack quite a punch!

Nice! Out of that carbine barrel you likely have 10mm performance out of the .40, not to mention larger wound diameter and heavier bullet weight.

Nope, use the Google.

Nope. It's a rifle and I'm a ND resident. ND doesn't care where you buy a rifle from and Montana it's okay to sell to anyone who lives in a neighboring state.

Wow, I didn't know that Ruger had stopped production of the PC40! Good thing I bought mine when they first came out. At that time they were the same price as the PC9 but since I already had a Ruger .40 caliber pistol and a number of magazines the PC40 was a good fit.

Don't you love unsolicited legal advice from people who have no idea what they're talking about?

Yea, I figured I'd wait till supply caught up. Turns out supply never did.

The Takedown PC-9 is so incredibly popular I imagine that Ruger decided to just keep pumping out PC-9s. Why go through the trouble of swapping between 9mm and 40 production runs when 9mm sells as soon as you have it in the box?

Someday I imagine the market will get saturated and making some PC-40s will be a way to keep production capacity busy.

Your right! It's not legal under federal law. Montana and ND might not give a damn about federal law. Good for them.

You're incorrect.

18 USC 922 (b)(3)
(3)
any firearm to any person who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe does not reside in (or if the person is a corporation or other business entity, does not maintain a place of business in) the State in which the licensee’s place of business is located, except that this paragraph (A) shall not apply to the sale or delivery of any rifle or shotgun to a resident of a State other than a State in which the licensee’s place of business is located if the transferee meets in person with the transferor to accomplish the transfer, and the sale, delivery, and receipt fully comply with the legal conditions of sale in both such States (and any licensed manufacturer, importer or dealer shall be presumed, for purposes of this subparagraph, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, to have had actual knowledge of the State laws and published ordinances of both States), and (B) shall not apply to the loan or rental of a firearm to any person for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes;

@tarosean beat me too it.

It is completely 100%. legal to buy, sell or otherwise transfer a long gun from any FFL holder in any state regardless of where the transferee lives. Again this is per federal law and ONLY if the firearm is transferred through a FFL. tarosean posted the correct federal law explaining this.

Handgun must stilll transfer through aa FFL in the transferee's state of residence.

Now state laws can be different. As always check YOUR state laws and the state laws where the transfer takes place. One must follow both states laws in this instance. I know Missouri use to have a law that only allowed transfers of long guns in states that border it. But that was changed about 20 years ago when CCW was passed.

There are enough wackadoo real gun laws, that almost anything becomes believable.
Haven't ever warmed up to the new Ruger PCs, though they certainly make perfect sense, for many reasons.
Had an original some years ago, and got another recently. Really prefer the aperture sight on the receiver, where God intended. ;)
For the OP, glad you like .40s, and that you found a carbine for it. PCCs are simply great.

Excellent! The .40 S&W PC40 would certainly be my next Ruger rifle buy…if I could ever find one. :(

Stay safe.

I can only imagine the gun shop drama.
- Pawn shop boss,, "What the heck, you took in a 40, nobody wants those anymore."
- Trusted employee! "You'll see, it's like used cars, there's a butt for every seat! I'll list it at a premium and the buyer won't bargain."
- Pawn shop boss, "OK, you're smart feller, edjumacte me....."
OP shows up....

Congrats. Jealous. I had an original PC4 many years ago and sold it because I didn't like having to use Ruger's proprietary magazines. I bought one of the new 9mm PCC's as soon as it was evident they took Glock mags and planned to pick up a 40 when they came out. Got distracted by life and never got around to it. Oh well. I'd jump on one if it crossed my path at a reasonable price.

Nothing wrong with a 40 cal carbine. As ugly as the Hi Point carbines are, my 4095 is super reliable and pretty accurate too.

I even thought about a 40 upper for my Colt style AR lower, magazine availability is what stopped me.
