Magazine disconnect stories. Anyone have any?

Kano,

Just to make you feel even better about the whole thing.......A was promoted in two months to Sargeant E5 and put incharge of four other guys. B was so well liked that some folks insisted I teach A better pistol marksmanship skills. I failed to see the humor then.

These were nuke security troops BTW, not run of the mill Infantry, hand picked at that time for smarts and abilities.

We are all human.

I have magazine disconnect on my M&P 40, M&P 45 and M&P Shield 9.

I think grip safety, external safety, loaded chamber indicator, magazine disconnect all exist because we are human. As much as I want to claim I am perfect, I am not and have made my share of gun related oops during my lifetime.

20 years ago, I was at a friend's house who was not new to firearms. He was cleaning his 45 caliber pistol and after he removed the magazine, I heard a loud BANG and saw a hole in his apartment wall. The bullet went through his building's drywall/stucco exterior and another building's stucco exterior/drywall 40 feet away and embedded in the wood frame of the couch. The occupant of that building happened to be my friend's friend. Since we were all shooting buddies, we were initially fascinated by the penetration power of Hydra-Shok JHP then grilled my friend for being careless.

A magazine disconnect could have prevented that unintentional discharge.

When I could only buy M&P pistols with magazine disconnect for California, I hated it. Then while doing trigger jobs on M&P40/45 using Burwell pdf, I learned the magazine disconnect really did not affect the trigger pull and started not hating it. Same thing with M&P Shield 9 with magazine disconnect and pop up loaded chamber indicator.

How many of us questioned airbags in cars when they first came out? Do all drivers always wear seat belts? ;)

I always believed them to be a poor substitute for good training. I believe the primary purpose is to avoid accidents from the most incompetent of us who can't properly clear a pistol. People cycle the slide and eject the round in the chamber (placing a new round in chamber) failing to the 3 point inspection, remove the mag, and fire into the clearing barrel (you would be surprised to find out how often this happens in the military). When I was training police in Panama (they use the BHP) in order to do dry fire practice we had to remove the guts out of mags.

No, and I think they should. But I wouldn't necessarily advocate for cars that won't start unless your seatbelt is on.

None the less, thanks for sharing that story. I guess I still just see it as poor weapons handling that is inexcusable, but like you said, we are all human.

Again, distraction is a killer.

I have a story on where a magazine safety would have saved a life. My father told me of a someone who was killed because he was showing off his fathers pistol to a friend. He pulled the magazine out of the gun and told his friend that it's now safe but didn't clear the chamber. The friend points it at the son's head and pulled the trigger and killed him. I myself don't like magazine safeties and remove them when possible like on my S&W 39-2.

In the 1960s, my dad bought my older sister a convertible Mustang (aka rag top). For what ever reason, he required us to wear seat belts when seat belt laws weren't a glimmer in any politician's eye. As a result, wearing seat belts is no big thing for me when in a car. It does not bother me to wear a nomex fire resistant suit, helmet, 5 point harness and a Hans device in my race car.

On the other hand, my mother would not wear a seat belt in the car until it was made a law. And then, she constantly complained about it.

Back on subject. I'm not a fan of magazine disconnects and the pistol that I carry does not have one. But, I do have pistols in the gun safe with magazine disconnects and I have no intentions of disabling them. If they ever get pressed into carry service, I'll train to deal with the disconnect and then it will be a non-issue.

(P.S. I will not carry a striker fired pistol that does not have a manual safety. They are not safe to carry in my opinion.)
