Name some movies in which guns have been banned

Hence, it re-enforces the idea that a private citizen should not be armed because the Gov't will come to the rescue, and only Gov't troops should have guns because they are the only ones professional enough to handle them..

I took it the other way. That private citizens, if untrained to protect themselves, will be helpless if/when the day comes, and will have to hope the government comes to rescue them.

(which jives better with the message from Hot Fuzz, that guns are awesome)

Excellent movie.

Haven't seen V for Vendetta yet (I am one of the three or four people in the USA who haven't) but plan to rent it.

Of course, I've never seen Red Dawn either (need to rent that too, I suppose).

Wow, you are behind. Simply buy them, they're both pretty cheap, and you'll probably want them anyway. Red Dawn is a classic, and V for Vendetta is certainly destined to be. It's one of few English movies I have watched several times. Though you can't even tell it's him, it is probably Hugo Weaving's finest role and certainly Natalie Portman's.
