New Remington R51 - 3913 killer?

Those same "blind/mute workers in SC" produce M16s, M249s, M240s, FN pistols, Winchester 70s, and other high-quality firearms (at FN Manufacturing in Columbia, SC). We would be fortunate indeed if Remington would use SC workers to produce the R51.

Instead, we have to settle for Charlotte, NC workers at Remington's new facility there. Which isn't so bad- at least it's not in a freedom-hating state like New York, Conn., or Mass.
Thank you sir.

After what they did to Marlin they will have to show me. I can't imagine why anybody would give big green a free pass.
I don't know why anyone would give any company a free pass, whatever that even means. But this is a handgun, so it would make sense to compare it to other Remington handguns. It turns out that in a large company there are different groups who work on different things. The R1911 is a great 1911 - perhaps the best one that you can buy for under $1000, and it is just $700.

I got my stainless R1 for $640 OTD. I can't think of any 1911 I could have gotten for that price that would be any better

I bought a Remington 1911 off a friend. He got it new for $600 and I got it nearly new for $550, and it's BRILLIANT. The fit and finish is nearly as nice as a Kimber 1911 he has that cost twice as much, and it's far better than I expect for a 1911 at that price range.

1911's have gotten ridiculously over priced for the utility they provide. Must be a great amount of money being spent for the equivalent of what a jeweler would call a "mind clean" diamond that cannot be distinguished from a well cut lesser quality diamond. One of the funniest things I ever saw was a bunch of IPSC Class A guys using the latest 1911 superzapper technology get their clocks cleaned by a guy using a Ballester Molina. Another was seeing Leatham and Enos lose a six shot stage to a guy with a .45AR Webley and it was not because they screwed up. Just another reminder that on any given day the mediocre can have an exceptional day and defeat the best people and equipment in the World. I hope the new R51 is a huge success and results in a full size model in .40 and .45. It would be really ironic, if almost a hundred years after Remmington lost out on a contract for a pistol that some thought at the time better than a 1911, the 1911 started to lose its dominance as "the SA gun" in the gun games.

I got an R1 when it first got released I traded a guy who wanted an AK that was a cheapo Century. That R1 was one of the most accurate 1911's I ever shot. Now Remington is price gouging those guns with a dozen different models over a thousand bucks for. They were great at 5-600, but not at 1200 for the "enhanced" or "carry". For what? It can't be that much better than the 500 dollar model.

they still offer the basic $600 model. Nothing wrong with more options, it not like they did away with the oruginal

The previously-quoted price of $379 always seemed impossibly low given what you get...particularly because this design took some real engineering work by Remington to revive and modernize a long-dead design instead of simply being a well-established design (1911, AR-15, etc). There's R&D to recoup in addition to the normal costs of midrange manufacturing quality, marketing, etc.

I have no problems with the eventual . . . official . . . MSRP being higher than what had been reported. I'll still get one. It would be rather unlikely if Remington DIDN'T have a social media employee.

Yes but R&D is a one-time cost. Production/materials cost is per unit. Spread out amongst all examples of a product ever produced R&D is usually not that much.

I'll probably still end up with one but it does seem a bit like a bit of a bait-and-switch. A lot of the publicity they had attained lately was largely effected by their previously announced MSRP.

If Remington is able to keep the cost to $379.00 S&W would probably throw their hands up in despair and just discontinue the 3913.

I agree-Every forum I am a member of has had threads about this pistol. There seems to be a tremendous amount of interest in it. I believe prices will be above MSRP for a while then the should settle down later on. I am interested but I am the kind of guy that will wait & bide my time while others test it out. Then I'll decide whether to buy or not.

Here is the R1 on top of a 3913,

Years ago I had a 3913 and just loved it. I had it up to the time that the Kahr K9 came out and traded it for the smaller 9mm. Seeing the size comparison to the R51, I can tell you that I can't wait until the R51 is available.

One of our other instructors recently told me he'd been given a price from a LE dealer of $299 for this new gun. That puts it right at the price range for a couple of the newer .380's (LE pricing) on the market. That alone may make it attractive to some cops as an off-duty weapon. Time will tell.

I wouldn't be surprised to see one of them appear at the range in the near future, and will keep an eye out to see how it does, if & when one or more appear.

I'll be more interested if they get around to putting together an armorer class for it, as that would indicate some interest in competing for the secondary/off-duty market (and let me see what it's like inside and for extended maintenance/service).
