I impulsively purchased a new Savage Tactical .308 package from Cabela's on sale for $649 = $705 OTD. The salesman told me that Cabela's buys them directly from Savage and are the only retailer selling this combo with the new Choate Tactical stock. I felt it was a good deal considering the stock sells for $160+ online. I has the 24" heavy bbl and retains the removable barrel nut and floorplate. :D

Money is tight right now so I've have to sell a couple of nice milsurps off at the next fun show to pay for it. :(

So for now it has inexpensive Weaver bases with a "loaner" Centerpoint scope & rings.

Range day is Sunday...here's a picture of the rig.

That actually sounds like one heck of a good price on a NICE rifle. Did the bi-pod come with the stock? If so makes it even a sweeter deal. Will be interested to see a range report.

No, the bipod was borrowed from another rifle I have it's the $39 bipod from Wal-Mart (they work good!)

Very nice rifle! I've got a 10FP, originally with the Choate Folder:barf: I replaced the stock with a Choate Ultimate Varminter, but wished I'd seen the Tactical first. My stubby 20" heavy barrel will shoot .5 MOA all day at 100yrds, with tuned handloads. You'll be very happy with yours, come Sunday;)

Be sure to post your first target!

Thank you very much for posting that today jpwilly!

I just happened to be near a Cabela's and have been wanting to get a 10FP. So I followed in your tracks and grabbed one up myself.

Many thanks!

Nice lookin' rifle, but you know this thread is worthless without pics...of targets. :p I have heard good things from this rifle, looks like a great deal.

Hmm, I wonder if that stock would accomidate the new 10FP's with detachable magazines?

Here is the one I like...

A lot of good features for the money.

Domino, I'd like to get that fluted bbl with muzzle brake on my rig...maybe after mine is shot out! ;)

It will fit if you widen the trigger guard recess/cut out on the Choate Tactical A5 stock. The trigger guard on the AccuStock rifles is wider and he bolt release is different so a trigger guard off of a standard DBM rifle won't work.

No 4-16 is just about right. More power won't hurt but the FOV is limited if you to too high. 6-24 is pretty common too. Most "Tactical" bolt rifle shooters use something in the neighborhood of 10x

I think 6-24 is a little excessive for a .308, though it won't hurt if you don't plan on having to quickly find and track targets. It won't make the rifle any more accurate, and USMC Scout/Snipers used to use 10x Unertles to get consistent hits at 1000 meters. They since upgraded to 3-12 S&B's because they are more versatile, especially in an urban environment, where the ability to "quickly find and track targets" comes in handy.

how small of groups are you expecting? 1" at 100yards equals 10" at 1000 yards, Many Savage's will hold 1" and smaller at 100.

This is all mechanically of course. You still have to pull the trigger at the right moment with the right dope and sight picture

i think 4-16 is more than what i will need ...how far out do u think this thing is acc. to?

Short Range 0-300 only requires you to hold still and squeeze the trigger and use decent ammo for MOA accuracy. Medium Range 300-600 requires all the same plus some compesation for bullet drop and doping the wind. 600+ is all of the above and knowing how to dope the wind and keeping the bullet supersonic.

well ... i don't evan know wnhat "dope" eans...... to be honest i duck hunt have a few hand guns and an AR... i decieded that i wanted to learn how to "really shoot" so i bought this gun and am doing as much reading as i can... i have yet to buy a scope, ring, or bases. I'm open to sugestions...and is there anywhere you guys recomend to do some reading up on this?.....do ya thik this is a good first distance rifle... i bought it over a REM 700 VTR... i havn't picked it up yet so i could change my mind no problem

It's a good platform for first long range rifle. "Doping the wind" is reading the wind and compensating for the effects of wind to get your bullet on target aka "Kentucky windage". At long ranges this is vital to one shot hits. At short ranges where the bullet travels in a very flat trajectory and not long enough for the wind to push it off target it's not as vital to first shot hits.

Optics are up to your budget and tastes. Lots of good feed back on Nikon Buckmaster or Monarch scopes, Bushnell 3200, 4200 & 6500 Elite, Luepold VX-3 or MK 4, Falcon Menace, Millett TRS-1, SWFA SS 10x42, Burris Fulfield II, etc etc.

i can't decide on a scope... think i'm just going to buy a cheap barska to toss on it till i figer out what i want
