I'm in Florida and while we don't have Open Carry, more and more Floridians are starting to come around to the idea. It may be another ten or twenty years but it's still fun to think about.
There are number of guns I'd like to make that one on my hip when I'm out in public, granted I'll still keep my concealed permit so I can keep a snubby .357 in my pocket but there are a lot of guns to ponder on.
There's the 1911 .45 ACP, now while the standard 7+1 carry is certainly a beautiful piece of effective and reliable technology...I'm a Magnum Dweeb, I love controlling those .357 and 44 Magnum hand cannons like they're nothing but tame kittens I can double tap inside a playing card at fifteen yards. Trouble is .44 Magnums might be a bit of overkill given their habit of being good deer killers nad firing one off in a public setting even in a good shoot might still lead to innocent bystanders getting hurt, unless the math for .357s being loaded low grain and high velocity equals incredible stopping power with little over-penetration, then maybe I could reliably consider it. Yeah I could shoot .44 spcl out of the .44 Magnum but... I'm of the understanding(perhaps mistaken) that they don't really out peform the .45 ACP unless in Corbon loads and other such hot loads.
Now onto .357s, there's the six-shooter, but with the S&W 627 and Taurus 608 eight shots, a model in a six inch or four inch barrel would be quite nice. I'm sorry but 9mm's and .40s just don't come into the equation. Now granted there's the Sigs but I can't find a love for them and having fired a friend of mine's 220 a half-dozen times I can't get into them.
Now there are Glocks and the .45s but I just don't care for a .45 in a Glock, feels almost unnatural in some strange sense I can't explain. Now the 10mm, somehow seems almost natural and I've shot some of the hotter loads out of the Glock 20 and fell in love with it. If I could get a 6" slide and 6" barrel, that'd be some good cooking in the performance department...just something to ponder.
Granted I could just slap a Ruger Black Hawk on my hip and get the effect I want, being a proud patriot not afraid to be a patron of the 2nd Amendment. One of my pet fears is worrying about some hood, wanna-be-thug fool trying to grab off my hip. I realize you have to be situationally aware but from experience I had one run up and try to grab my car keys out of my hands as I was looking for the key in the dark night, he caught a surprise when all 250 pounds of me stuffed into 5'9" with a 40" chest and 26" biceps was right behind him grabbing ahold of him and "politely" asking for my keys back. I'd always carry a concealed piece so long as the law allows and since this is Florida where the concealed carry revival movement was in part started, I'd guess I then have to make that my primary protector then. A .44 Magnum SA on the hip and a snubby .357 in the pocket, not too shabby I'd think but for now it's all in harmless pointless grinning fun.
