PRS/NRL22 rifle

I guess I'm just a slow learner, it took until my mid 60s to try higher rings:)

As a hunter that is all I've ever heard as low as possible. I've never gotten too picky about it and never had issues.

On my 22 built I went with Medium rings that were .920 on top of the rail that was .4ish. To be honest I could use a smidge more. I think it's more about how your body is built and how you get into the rifle, good cheek weld and all that.

:) FWIW I preached as low as possible too for a long time until I started shooting more and reading more. I'm slow too I was well into my 50's :)

I still tend towards lower scope mounts, but I don't shoot precision rifle (yet) and I don't shoot at distances longer than about 100 yards (yet).

Prone guns get higher rings. Run Burris low zee on my 35 rem 760. 2-7x Leupold. But that stock is old style, for irons usage, not a high comb.

So w lows its proly like a higher comb stock w mediums LOL.

It is reflexive, just pull it up and ths image/ target are there. No fiddlin w head movement or nuthin. Its like a magic wand in the deer woods.

Ran Ruger mediums on my Ruger #1s.
Even on the B models where I shot chucks off bipods.

People have different builds and face shapes. Im just an ugly average all around LOL

On my NRL22 junker Savage the EGW mediums are plenty high enough ( for me ).
Could go higher, but then would need to pad the comb ( stock not adjustable ).
Running reg 40mm objective scope w zero cant base. Our local matches are 100 yards or so max.

Scope came in today. Mail lady heard about it and found out it was delivered about 1/4mi away, it was across the street and they have long driveway, she doubled back on her route and found me in the back yard:):), Now to get everything else in and start installation. All this makes me feel 60yrs younger like a kid at Christmas time

Base arrived BUT it is for a long action, description was for a short action, will return and look for correct item.:(. 34mm Wheeler scope mounting kit arrived so getting closer. Went by the LGS and picked up some Fiocchi 22lr (I didn't have any of these and owner said his 1022 likes them) and a couple boxes of Blazer and CCI. IF I ever can get to a range I should have enough different ammo to get an idea of accuracy. Scope looks like new, I don't think it has ever been mounted.

Most hunting rifle stocks are designed for use with iron sights. Manufacturers stopped installing iron sight on most rifles but never bothered to update the stocks. And adding optics was not a thought when the AR15/M16 was designed. Most rifles will benefit from either an adjustable cheek rest or higher comb height.

After shooting the PRS22 match last weekend I've been looking at purchasing a rifle, and I have LOTS of questions..

Price spread is tremendous..$200 to $3000, I'm retired so the $3000 rifles are out. What about these lower cost options?
1; Howa 1100, I own several Howa 1500s 2 30-06s and a 6.5cm in a MDT Oryx chassis, they run smooth and are accurate
2; Ruger; American or RPR22? they both run a little more than the Howa but Ruger has a quality product
3; Savage MKII FV, FVSR or BTV; I own several Savage Axis rifles and a 110 wood stocked 30-06 and they all are good shooters.
Those are the ones I've found that I liked that are in the lower end of the price range, there are others I like that are hitting the border of more than I want to spend, Should I save more money and buy a CZ, Tikka, Bergara etc. up front to save being frustrated later?

looking around I've noticed there is a spread from 16-24in barrels, my thoughts are
1: The 24" barrel would be harder to move in and out of obstacles 2; Are the longer barrels more accurate? Where is the middle ground? Accuracy verses ease of movement?

20" Barrel might be just the ticket for you.

I have an 18 & a 20”.

A 24” would not be enough hindrance to not get if it balanced better.

In many stocks it would.

But he bought a Bergara, so 18” it is, go from there.

Looking at 22lr ammo, I'm seeing the "target" loads and most premium brands have a muzzle velocity between 1050 and 1080, Is that because of sound barrier? I have multiple boxes of CCI with a listed muzzle velocity of 1235, Is that a no-go? Are the premium brands worth 2,3 or more times the price of Aquila, CCI (Blazer) and Fiocchi?

I read something about torque settings of stock affecting accuracy, Is this a thing or just internet BS? I've always just set to mfg specs and ran with it.

Reasonable torque and you’ll be fine.

Yes, stick with target velocity lubed lead.

You might get lucky, but in general the expensive target stuff shoots better. The better stuff not only tends to shoot tighter groups, you have less……whoa, where did that shot go/dang that sure blew that group kind of shots.

I looked at my ammo cans yesterday and found 24 boxes of CCI 1235fps, (mini mags), I guess I should keep that for my other 22s.
I found torque specs from 25 to 55ft lbs on the net, I'll contact Bergara and see what they suggest, I looked on their site and d/l the owners manual but couldn't locate their torque specs

Yeah, I haven't found that .22LR doesn't generate enough barrel vibration to seriously affect accuracy, but if you had an extremely thin barrel and it were insufficiently pressure-pad damped, it could be a group-screwer. Pressure pads are often pretty good if the barrel diameter isn't extremely thin, but I'm a big "epoxy-bed the action, free-float the barrel" proponent...because it's often more important to have the rifle hit the same POI from season-to-season than to have the rifle group 1 1/8" or less at 100 yards. After all, what good is a rifle that groups 3/4" at 100 yards, if at times it prints 2" from where it was zeroed? JP

These are nice rings that won't break the bank.

I put this Nightforce rail on my Bergara, 20 MOA, so you need more elevation in the scope than if you use a 30 MOA rail.
Depends on how far you shoot too, at West GA Precision it doesn't look like we'll shoot past 250 yards.

Bergara with Nightforce rail, TPS rings, PST Gen II scope, put an arca rail on it as well.

How do you like the B14R with PST2 combo?

I ask because I've found a PST GEN 2 5-25 MRAD with EBR-2D reticle on sale for a decent price. It and the B14R wouldn't break the bank so to speak.

M friend after seeing pictures of my B14r ordered a CMMG (I think) Barrel and bolt for an AR he is going to build, he called me today with pics of the barrel but bolt is not here yet. He is going to order a Vortex scope from the same place I did, I think. Now I am getting him hooked on rim fire also. He is a BIG fan of the AR platform, I can't wait till he can feel my B14r and shoot it, heck I can't wait to shoot it also:)

I like both a lot, and really like the scope. I've shot it on a Dasher in PRS and a Vudoo in NRL-22, works great. I gave the Bergara to a nephew in law, but it's a great "Rem 700 compatible" rifle at its price point. The Vudoo will out shoot it, but not by a lot. The factory trigger is nice, but the Trigger Techs, BixNAndys, Timney "The Hit" triggers are really nice, and "drop in". I'm a BixNAndy Tacsport Pro fan.

THANKS!

The B14R and the PST, along with rings and 30MOA base are en route. Used some Scheels gift cards to the the "bite" out of the B14R.

Now to scrounge some ammo to test. I'll probably go with the Trigger Tech Diamond, I used one of their triggers in my last rifle and am very happy with it.

I tried SK Standard Plus, SK Rifle Match, SK Long Range , Lapua Center X……

Just have to see what it likes. Some of the Eley ammo is another good choice to try.

Mine liked Standard Plus better than Rifle Match….ymmv. Liked Center X best of those. Practice with the cheaper SP or LR

Well the "good" news is, availability is shrinking the field.. a lot. I managed to find:

SK Long Range Match
Lapua Long Range

That's about it in the premium lines. I'll test those next weekend when the parts come together. I'm going to do some more searches and see what I can find. I read your B14R ammo test thread, well done!

I haven’t tried the Lapua Long Range in the Bergara I had, but it shoots very well in my Vudoo and Jeff’s Bergara. We both bought some because Center X was nowhere to be found.

I do still have a little over 1K of Center X, so I’m good there for a little while. Almost bought some more LLR the other day, but bought a trigger instead. I have 1500+ of it. It can go quickly through.

Finally received some rings, not 40moa but I will use these until I find something else I like, just a mockup, I haven't tightened anything up yet. I ordered some more ammo to test, Grafs had a sale last weekend, ordered Monday and received today, Free shipping and fair prices I thought. I modified a bipod to work with an Arca Swiss rail, I'll see if it holds up. I will try to get it sighted in this weekend and play with some different ammo, between the 15 different types I have and these I hope to find something that works.. 20230622_163345[1].jpg
