Pump shotguns aren't so slow

I shoot pumps for skeet, trap doubles, and trap report doubles and have no problems "running em". Hold my own against O/Us, Autos, and don't give it a thought. Of course, I've been shooting my 870TB for 45 years and my M12 for fifteen.
Skeet average this year is 92% and I only shoot eight weeks, one round per week. Pumps rock.

This thread caught my eye because a lot of Winchester model '97s are seen at a cowboy action shoot. Not only can pump guns be fired quickly, they can be loaded quickly too, although the technique is not what you might expect. Here is a video of one of our champion level shooters, Deuce Stevens from Michigan, setting the world record for 4 shots from a '97, starting with the gun unloaded on a table, hands off gun and ammo. He gets his four shots off in 2.48 seconds:

How about loading and firing 6 shots in under 5 seconds:

You might think that the old double barreled shotguns with external hammers would be painfully slow to shoot. Here is a video of the second fastest record time by T-Bone Dooley in Texas, shooting 4 shots in 3.58 seconds. (The video of the world record time of 3.21 seconds is not playing for some reason.)

So when shooting fast is the main goal, creative shooters can find a way to get it done!

I shoot trap just about every week with this 1948 Model 12 all year long. 99.99% of the time I am shooting standard 16 yard singles.

I tried shooting it in doubles once. I know that before semi-automatics became popular doubles trap was shot with pumps like this all the time. But I found that working the slide made the barrel wobble, disturbing my sight picture and I did not do very well on the second shot. Probably if I practiced for a while I would get better. But for now, I only shoot singles with it.

I pay particular attention to keep my finger off the trigger when I work the slide because a Model 12 WILL slamfire it the bolt is closed with the trigger held back. For what it's worth, I have three Model 12s, the other two are much older than this one. I would not dream of playing around trying to slam fire guns that are close to 100 years old just to see how fast I can shoot them.

rudy etchin shot 100 straight doubles with a 870 12ga and years later he did it again with the same 870. eastbank.
