So around 4 people on the planet, give or take 1 person, actually wanted them to reintroduce a SL-8 and they go and do it.. :what:

Why? Why? Why? SMH

S&W still offers 3Gen autos made in Hougton ME on contracts, maybe HK had one come up and decided if the line is running then make extra.

German manufacturers of firearms are intensely micromanaged and even get prosecuted or sued for selling guns to countries that the goverment assumes shoudn't be allowed to have them - after the fact Off go the cops to arrest management beeb burb beeb burb and it's just another day in Deutschland. .

SIG USA is quite a bit it's own corporation with much less jerking around by Germany.

I figured the conversions are a reason they are introducing them.

However, if the international demand is falling off, they may want a place to send excess production until they build something else. I figure they will sell them all.

Are the SL-8's made in Germany? If so, that's why we get those instead of semi G36's, due to "sporting purpose" import restrictions. H&K certainly isn't going to build a production line in the U.S. merely to sell a few hundred, or a few thousand, civilian G36's.

The laws are likely one reason behind it, but the SL8 is really just a repackaged semi-auto G36 but with a few differences to make them incompatible with real G36 magazines. But really, the choices back then were because the Assault Weapons Ban was still in effect. There really is no reason to continue building them the way they did unless they just had that many parts kicking around that they thought they could make enough to justify the expense.
If you were to reintroduce them today, it would seem to make more sense to just use all the common G36 parts you can and ship it with low capacity double stack magazines and the big goofy thumbhole stock. If American owners want to put the guts into G36 look-alike stocks and get standard capacity magazines, then that's on them.
