I traded this week for a Ruger No. 1-H in .458 Win Mag. Why? I would rather ask why not? It's a beautiful rifle, it will kill anything on the planet and it's a Ruger. But seriously, I've had the big bore bug for a while now and I finally got the chance to trade around and get this bad boy so I jumped on it. I love the figuring in the wood. I think I might even take a crack at a whitetail with it this season.

The first two pictures are pretty dark. The close ups of the buttstock really show the figuring.

Nice! From what I've been told, the .458 will bang-flop white tail pretty reliably without tearing up much meat at all. The people that use it, seem to love it.

You a handloader? If not then hope you have a strong shoulder and a 6 figure salary because that bad boy looks like it would be addictive.

My friend let me shoot his. You can quickly (though expensively) split firewood with these.

Love it. I want a 375 HH for the same reason, I'm just too chicken to go above a 416 Rigby/Rem...

I hope you enjoy it!

Yes I do handload and that makes it considerably more affordable. No way I would wanna pay $75 a box.

The recoil actually isn't all that bad. It's more of a hard push than a sharp kick. I've honestly shot 3" magnums that kicked worse.

I neck shoot my deer anyways. So this shouldn't make much difference. Break the neck and not ruin any meat is the way to go.

Very nice looking Model 1 with some great figuring in the stock. Don't have any use for the .458 but wouldn't mind one in .375 H&H or .45-70.

That is nice.

I have for years tried to get my wife to understand that I NEED an elephant rifle. Suppose someone called me and wanted me to go elephant hunting? Here I'd have to decline because I don't have a proper elephant rifle. ;)

Sort of like a woman not having a "little black dress."

She ain't buying it. :D

She IS pretty good about my other gun whims, I gotta admit.

Thats a nice looking rifle. I'm trying to convince myself that we have large dangerous game on our lease in South Arkansas and that I need a 416! I already have a #1 in 45-70 that is fun to shoot.

Been there, done that.

While scouting the wares at a gun show we ran across a Ruger No. 1 in 25-06. When my friend asked my opinion I told him I would rather have the 458 next to it and made the comment that you never know when a herd of elephants might come through our section of Northern Arkansas. I also volunteered to buy a box of ammo so we could shoot when we got home.

To make a long story short, he bought it, I bought the $90 box of ammo and we each shot it one time. At least I can say that I shot an elephant gun.:D

One time.

Lots of options for good .458" cast bullets that would work perfectly on whitetail without ruining much meat.

The recoil from a 458 is different than what many people think. It is a hard, slow push rather than the sharp jab you get from a 300 magnum. Mind you, it's a BIG slow push, but if you fire it from a field position you can rock back with it. I have no desire to fire one from a bench, thanks. 350 grain handloads are a lot more pleasant to shoot and very effective on deer and pigs. I shot a couple with mine, but finally got tired of lugging a rifle heavy enough for a 458 around in the woods.

You must shoot some really nasty 3" magnums if they are even comparable to a 458. My 2 oz turkey loads fired out of a 7 pound shotgun aren't even close.

Beautiful rifle, but I would think it a little overkill for any animal here in Oklahoma. Take it squirrel hunting and see how that works out, lol.

.
Congratulations, Barrett! on this acquisition. Beautiful rifle. Yes! Why not? and now you're ready. for. anything. gamewise.

I love the others' comments too. :)

Pretty stock indeed.

That Ruger action is plenty stout but always cleared my sinuses compared to a standard bolt gun.
