I think it is a Colt prototype for a swing out cylinder revolver with simultaneous extraction and ejection. That would probably put it in the 1880's. But asking for a model number shakes my confidence, because a prototype would not have one, in the ordinary sense of a model number. It may have been in one of R. L. Wilson's lavishly illustrated books, before he got busted for plundering the Connecticut State Library's Colt collection (there's a good video about that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nhUpPbqD44 . It's about 28 minutes long.)

It's Colt's prototype for the worlds first successful double action, swing out cylinder revolver, made around 1884.
The design was never produced as other then a prototype, an improved version was marketed to the military and commercial market in 1889 as the Colt New Army & Navy models.

They probably shoulda stuck with the prototype....🙄

Now there is something entirely different, with the crane hinged at the top.
Are we going to find out? :)
