So replace "Minuteman Event" with "Generic Event 'X' unpopular with the generic protest crowd". How would you handle getting out of this situation?

There's probably more to the story than the Times reports (as usual). I'm figuring I'd end up being arrested just like the driver was. If someone was pounding on and destroying my vehicle, I'd be thinking "LA riots and the truckdriver-whose-name-escapes-me getting pulled out of his vehicle and beaten near to death. I'd want to get out of there. I wouldn't put the pedal to the metal and smash through people, but I'd be slowly driving a few thousand pounds of steel through the crowd pushing them out of the way and I suppose hoping in vain that they realize I "outweigh" them and get out of the way. I'd be calling 911 as the incident occurred and report the damage (and hopefully point out the criminals).

That's probably silly thinking though, especially in an urban area like LA. I mean heck, they're just protesting and showing a healthy display of emotions.

Violence Erupts at O.C. Protest
Crowd gets rough and police swarm in after a Minuteman event in Garden Grove.

Times Staff Writers

May 26, 2005

Three people were injured and at least eight arrested Wednesday in Garden Grove after a motorist drove into a crowd of 300 demonstrators protesting a speech by the founder of the Minuteman Project, authorities said.

The Minuteman Project is a citizens group that patrols the U.S.-Mexico border in an effort to stop illegal immigration.

The demonstrators had gathered at the Women's Civic Club of Garden Grove on Chapman Avenue about 7:30 p.m. to protest an appearance by James Gilchrist, charging that he and his group were racist.

Gilchrist has denied those claims and insists the group is stopping only illegal immigration. His talk was sponsored by Citizens for Action Now, an anti-illegal immigration group.

The motorist had attended Gilchrist's speech and was leaving when protesters began hitting his van with placards and other objects, said Garden Grove Police Lt. David Kivler. The driver, who was not identified but spoke to a KCAL-TV Channel 9 reporter, said he gunned his car engine to get away from the crowd. The man was arrested.

Authorities said the incident occurred when 100 listeners attempted to leave through the crowd of demonstrators. Kivler said protesters gathered around one of their cars.

"They surrounded it and started beating on it," Kivler said. Then, a second car tried to get through the crowd as well.

"As he was doing so he hit at least three people," Kivler said. All three were transported to a local hospital. None had major injuries, he said.

Kivler said the crowd grew increasingly boisterous after the injuries.

He said protesters began throwing filled soda cans at the assembled Garden Grove, Anaheim and CHP officers. At least eight people were arrested on suspicion of felony assault, while others were booked for disturbing the peace.

A witness, Eric Garcia, 22, of Anaheim said the evening turned ugly about 9 p.m. after the talk.

He said some protesters were in a driveway when someone in a car tried to leave and made contact with the group. "Then all hell broke loose," Garcia said. "People started throwing things, like rocks and bricks and stuff."

Within minutes, he said, there were about 30 police cars, and dozens of officers on horseback or wearing SWAT gear.

Protester Jose Gonzales, 27, a graduate student at UCLA, said he noticed dozens of additional police officers, some of them on horseback, arriving on the scene. He said they began making arrests and dispersing the crowd, which had been marching in front of the building where Gilchrist was speaking.

"When the meeting let out … police dragged people, men and women," Gonzales said. "There were men and women and children running away…. I ran. I lost my shoe."

By 10 p.m. police ordered the crowd to disperse, saying they were part of an unlawful assembly. If they refused, police said, they would be arrested. Within half an hour, the streets were nearly empty of protesters.

Times staff writer David Haldane contributed to this report.

Protest all ya want, no problem there. Start getting violent, such as beating on another's car, not getting out of the way of someone attempting to leave and don't be suprised if ya end up getting a bit squished.

I think my response would be to drive slowly through the crowd, even if they are pounding on the car and breaking the exterior lights. UNTIL somebody pops a tire or break a window into the passenger cabin. At that point, it is a direct hostile threat to my safety so its peddle to the metel and let the ruffians look after themselves.

Sadly, it looks like this issue is really heating up. I predict a long, hot, violent summer. :(

Yep, I would be driving slow until I thought they were about to break in or get the car off its wheels, at that point it becomes a 4wd, sorry if you can't get out of the way, I'm leaving NOW experience.

Use your anti-zombie training.

Head shots only.No random spraying into the mob.

If you can squish 'em w/the truck-go for it.Zombi..er mobs..er um protesters can be strong when attacking en masse.

Remember to save the last bullet.

:D

Well, as an update, the driver was released from custody. So it looks like the local authorities now agree driving away was acceptable in this instance, though it was after the fact, and the guy now has an arrest record for doing nothing more than getting out of harm's way.

Keep your protests on the sidewalk. I don't drive the sidewalk so don't protest in the street.

What I don't understand is how this happened! I mean, these are peacful, loving people dedicated to equality and justice for all. How did they turn into a hate-filled mob? :banghead:

I had to drive through a crowd once.

It was not fun.

They were a bunch of wanna-be ganger types and pee-wees that surrounded my car and started to reach in my windows to grab stuff. Some of them were even yelling "STOP!" I didn't.

I was not going fast but there were some definite bumps and exclamations of pain. One guy had his entire arm and head in my car, Mr. Doorpost kissed him hard on the ear as I went by.

I left the neighborhood by a different route and never heard anything about it.

Given that it only takes a few people to flip a car over or start it on fire or drag the driver out, I would say surrounding a car like that is assualt and the driver can defend himself in the best manner he can.

That said you have no right to drive into a crowd for any reason. If they have tyou blocked in and the area you are in is not on fire, flooding, filled with MZBs etc you have to wait until they get cleared out.

That would be Reginald Denny

If I recall correctly, suffered brain damage. I was living in LA at the time. Only good thing to come out of this (from my perspective) is, I went to the local gun shop and bought a Ruger P-94. And about two weeks later, a Mini 30. And a few weeks later...
You get the idea.

For one - I avoid crowds as much as possible.
If you don't want trouble - don't be where trouble will be.

Then again I was raised to NOT start a fight - If I got into one, I was supposed to end it.

So yeah folks burning draft cards and spitting on 'Nam Vets whom returned ...
Riots where the crowd comes to you because of your race...

Drive slow, steady and assertive. Then again having already locked the hubs is good for going over "bumps"...Old Broncos were great for getting over obstacles.

Popping into Neutral, Revving the 393, well hell , slap that Hurst like you mean it and pop that clutch...folks get the idea - right quick. Folks in front - "part" - ones in rearveiw, stepping and fetching, coughing and hacking ...

Like the man said " Grin as you emerge from the smoke - makes folks wonder just what the hell you are up to"

Why did he drive into the crowd? Doing anything in the middle of an angry mob is downright stupid. That sorta thing is a disaster waiting to happen, and is best avoided at all costs.

Hypothetically, I would think you'd want to keep moving forward and not stop for any reason. Lay on the horn to make sure everyone knows there's a moving car bearing down on them, and try not to go so fast that they splatter when they hit your bumper.

Hmm...

In these situations I think people should roll down the windows and ask the mob to move. If the mob tries to bring the violence inside the car, well...your life is in danger. How long do you think a crowd of idiots would keep assaulting a car after hearing a bunch of loud noises and seeing other members of the mob drop? No long, me thinks. Not that I'm encouraging violence.... I'm just saying that after you try to be nice, IF they decide to try to hurt you it becomes THEIR problem.

Besides, mobs can kiss my butt. I've been in at least 3 situations that turned into mobs and I never contributed - that means that rational people don't have to participate, leaving idiots in the mob. I agree with a previous poster - once harmful objects start coming inside the car (arms, fists, bricks, rocks), you life is in danger and there's no reason not to defend yourself.

If they're attacking your vehicle while it sits in your driveway, that's what cameras and phones are for.

I like the idea about rolling down a windshield. If someone grabs for your face than neck (and they will), you'll have ample justification for flooring it. Anyone you kill will be the fault of the person attacking you. Scars and bruises are your best means of avoiding prosecution.

If I were surrounded by an angry mob.....I'd wish I had not traded my Glock 31 (15 rounds) for a S&W model 65 (6 rounds).

Great responses from everyone.

I thing that that guy did the right thing, and those idiots should be thanking him for not flooring it and ending their obviously worthless lives.

GET A JOB YOU HIPPY PROTESTERS! Don't they have anything better to do with their time?

They were not hippy protestors. They were pro-illegal Mexican thugs, for the most part.
Biker

I never roll down my windows. Horns are made for alerting the unaware. My car is a POS, so beat on it all you want - won't change much...

These guys are volunteering to be speed bumps!
YOU GOT IT!

As far as bruises and bumps on me being my means of avoiding prosecution; I'm sure the scratches and dents on my car will do just as well.

My means for getting out of a 30-person mob attacking me and my vehicle:

1. Press accelerator. Increase engine speed to 4000 RPM or higher.

2. Place shifter in "First".

3. Dump the clutch.

4. Hold on. It's gonna be one Hell of a ride! :D :what: :neener:

If the sound of the screaming engine doesn't give them the clue to MOVE, then they deserve what's coming.

I'll do my best to avoid a mob, turning around and going back the other way if I must.

If a mob nonetheless surrounds my car, rocking it, hitting it, trying the doors, etc., then by the process of surrounding me, they are actively trying to prevent my retreat . . . at that point, they are no longer an annoyance, but a real, immediate DANGER.

The only reasonable response - in an effort to get away, of course - is heavy application of my right foot to the accelerator pedal.

If some are injured/maimed/killed by my effort to break contact and withdraw from their unprovoked assault, too bad. I will NOT become the next Reginald Denny.

(BTW, did anyone check the immigration status of the protestors, especially those arrested?)

Gee, first I'd try to make sure I didn't drive into a mob in the first place. If possible, I'd reverse my course. Situational awareness helps here. Not getting into that situation is the first priority.

If I was somehow ambushed by protesters jumping out the bushes, instantly boxing me in on all sides, sure I'd drive through them without a second thought. If possible, I'd drive through a lawn to avoid running people over, even if they deserve it. (I'd be sure to pay for the lawn and apologize to the owners of said property.)

I don't start fights. But I'll end them real quick. Considering I often keep medival weapons in my vehicle... They probably would run once I exitted my vehicle with a battle axe and/or hand and a half longsword, screaming "Valhalla awaits!" and other Odinistic phrases. I'm seriously considering switching over to two medium weight war hammers, but I think that topic should go over in "Non-firearm weapons".

I laid eyes on a "war hammer" at Warwick castle in Britain--beautifully simple.
