I was checking out the local pawn shops and found a cool old fixed sighted tapered barrel GP-100. I have been looking for a good fix sighted revolver to take on my ATV rides through the desert. I wanted something fairly indestructible and was going to settle for a Model 10 S&W until I found this one. It has the SP101 grips and makes a very trim package. I am thinking about carrying it in a Bianchi 14870 UM84 flap holster when riding. I will get a Simply Rugged holster for hiking and hunting. I got a great deal on it because the pawn shop said the barrel was shot out when it was really just leaded up. After some good cleaning, it came out great. To make the deal even better, it came with the original box and sleeve.

I can't wait to make up some load to match the sights and I will be good to go. Here are some pictures.

I haven't even shot it yet and it is already becoming one of my favorites...I just love the size, feel, and look of the short shroud...

QUESTION? How to mount Weaver rail on a 4"

Would like to mount a Red Dot Sight on this GP100. I'm 73 and need all the help I can get. Would like to narrow it down from the broadside of a barn to a target! Williams sights were an improvement but need somethin better.

1) What do you own?

4" GP 100, adj sight New July 2010

2) What grips do you use?

Stock rubber Hogue's. Love them.

3) What loads do you use?

Gun Show reloads from LAX Firing Range. .38 spl FMJ & WC's to factory .357's

4) Any modifications?

Williams fire-sights.

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100?

Drill and tap holes on the 4" to mount a Weaver rail for a Red Dot sights.

6) Holster(s)

FOBUS quick draw.

7) Speed Loader(s)

Safariland 1 C2 & 1 HKS Like the C2 best

Hi,
Here is my GP100

1) What do you own: I own a stainless GP100 in 4 inch with adj sights.

2) What grips do you use? Hoque grips that came with the revolver.

3) What loads do you use? Factory 140 to 158 gr 357 magnums

4) Any modifications? Action trigger job done by a gunsmith.

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100? Nothing.

6) Holster(s): I have a shoulder rig and a Uncle Mikes IWB holster. I also use both holsters on my S&W 686

7) Speed Loader(s): HKS.

1) What do you own: I own a blued GP100 6" - brought her home on Saturday - put 100 rounds through her on Sunday.

2) What grips do you use? The Hogue grip that came on it.

3) What loads do you use? So far, I've only put Blazer 158's through it. However, Thursday we will be running some Federal in 125, and some Remington in 158.

4) Any modifications? Yes. After Sunday's day at the range, I decided to clean it up. Disassembling the revolver proved problematic. The trigger group did NOT want to come out of the frame. Even with the pin fully depressed it took a herculean effort. A quick search on the intarweb showed that truing and cleaning the action up usually involves deburring. Since I noticed a good bit of manufacturing points on the frame and in the rear of the trigger guard a that were wicked sharp, I dulled them down with the dremel. Erring on the side of caution and not removing much metal. Not only did it go back together MUCH better, but fit much tighter closing the hardly noticeable gap between trigger group and main frame. I also deburred the 4 edges of the hammer strut above the spring, as well as a super sharp casting edge on the frame just above the crane pin.

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100? I'd like them to mail me a different one every month to show their appreciation for our devoted enthusiasm. I promise to spread them out to friends creating new enthusiasts. Honest.

6) Holster(s): Not yet, but I'm open to suggestions. I am leaning towards a spring-loaded Bianchi 2100 X.

7) Speed Loader(s): Not yet. I'm considering a 5-Star Firearms because it's damn sexy.

Thank God I'm unemployed for the time being. I can't seem to want to put the new revolver down. Told my wife she needed to get one. We could name them "Sid" and "Nancy".

7) Speed Loader(s): Not yet. I'm considering a 5-Star Firearms because it's damn sexy.

Niiiiice.

1. 6inch stainless

2. Just the standard hogues, though my hands are a bit small so i'm idly browsing other options.

3. lots of 125s over h110 or hs6, though I'm switching over to 158's now (at least for the h110). As far as factory loads go I'm partial to fiocchi 142's.

4. A little polishing on the internals, looking towards a wolff spring kit at some point.

5. Maybe a slightly better overall finish, but I prolly wouldn't trade it for the price point so.....

6. No holster yet, although I like the look of the simply rugged ones.

7. See the post above mine. I suddenly need those.

It's my first handgun and overall it's been great, loads of fun to shoot and accurate too. It's singlehandedly convinced several of my non-gun owning friends that they need a revolver. On the down side it's turned me into a bit of a ruger fan boy, S&W's don't have the same appeal (which is a bit of a pity since diversity is the spice of life. And as we all know, the spice must flow). And even worse, the gp's been so much fun that I'm now forced to scrimp and save so I can buy a redhawk. Poor poor me. :D

I have had my Ruger GP100, .357magnum, 3" barrel stainless, with fixed sights and the "smaller standard grips" for about 5 or 6 years.
I only carry it for CCW once in awhile. My regular every day carry is a Ruger SP101,
2.25", .357, which I've had for almost 10 years.
I do also, on odd occasions, carry a Ruger LCR, .38special.
You can't beat Rugers.
ETA.....I train with and fired my revolvers DA only........

I have a pair of 6" GP100's in SS, both wear Hogue grips. A pair of SP101's in .357 keep them company. I load everything with 158 gr. HP.

I got a 4 in blued adjustable sights, had her for a year now, shes my field gun when hikin, huntin, or fishin, i love her so much my ole lady gets mad at me cause i hold it more than her haha,:D my guns! 018.jpg

Not much love for the .327 in here, huh? Too bad, I'm very impressed with it and looking forward to someone (anyone?) offering a lever carbine.

Hello again,

I can't let these Smith owners get away with a 686 club without us GP100 users having something as well! Feel free to answer some questions:

1) What do you own: I own a stainless GP100 in 4 inch with adj sights.

GP100 stainless 6 inch bbl

2) What grips do you use? I think the Hogue Grips are absolutely the best on the market for this gun. They completely cover the backstrap, whereas, the hogue grips for a 686 do not (Sorry for the jab Smitty owners!) It makes a difference with full power loads.

Original rubber with wood inserts, much prefer this over Hogues

3) What loads do you use? I use a variety for plinking, with winchester 110, 125 being the most common. I also shoot Blazer .357 and Winchester 130 grain .38.

For woods carry I am ether carring Winchester 180 Partition Gold or corbon 200 HC.

158 grain JHP over 14 grains 2400, 158 grain LSWC (Lee TL mold) over 4.3 700X

4) Any modifications? I have none other than the Hogue grips.

Nope, why mess with a good thing?

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100? Nothing really, I am so pleased with mine. However, i would love to see another run of the Target Grey to match my SP101 2 incher. Maybe even an 8 inch version for hunting. I plan on the purchase of a 6 inch for hunting, but the 8 would be even better! The tigger seems to consistely get better with the new Ruger right out of the box.

Nada

6) Holster(s): I carry mine in a cheap but effective Uncle Mikes OWB (As if anything will really fit IWB!)

We are not allowed to carry in Canada. I know, its stupid but true. I do have a Safariland open front IPSC type and a few pancakes for when I get my holster certification at my club

7) Speed Loader(s): HKS and Bianchi.

Safariland CompIII

My wife and I have GP 100's. My wife has a 3", and mine is a 4". They look like the one in EVCMatt's pictures. These are our "ranch" guns. When we are fixing fence and such those are what we carry.

I use to be a S&W revolver man. Heck I've carried a S&W J,K,L,N frame as duty guns from 76 to about 92 when the dept switched to autos. However after trying the GP 100 I was sold.

Blued 6" bbl

stock Hogue monogrip - love it for the range, but can complicate holster draw with as it can stick to bare skin and some clothing

The vast majority of rounds are hand loaded 158gr LSWC, just because they cost about $0.12 each. For woods carry I'll use a 158gr semi-jacketed soft tip. SD I use Hornady critical defense (per legal advice I've kept the original packaging for this ammo in the nightstand safe).

I've polished the trigger and hammer with a dremel. Also dry fired it a LOT. Much smoother and consistent pull than when new. I'm hesitant to mess with spring weight, as this gun's main feature is durability - why compromise that even theoretically?

I wish the finishing work was a little nicer out of the box. I also wish the rear sight was a little more stable.

Simply Rugged - love it. Holds this hog leg close to my hip, and with the right belt works great for woods carry.

So far I just have a couple HKS speed loaders. A big lesson learned, these simply don't work well with LSWC or any flat tip rounds. Thankfully my self defense ammo is tapered and slides right in. I think I'd prefer a "push in" release rather than the twist style HKS uses.

I bought mine about four months ago. I instantly called Ruger and ordered the six pack of go sights and the wood insert grips. Did not like the feel of the factory stock rubber things. Now it is a shooter from hell.. I also reload so am searching for the 'perfect' round, both in 38 and 357.Most all my weapons are Ruger with the exception of my Taurus PT-840 ,Remington 12 ga. pump. and Marlin 30-30 AC 336C

Only been shooting 2 years so I am catching up.. No action changes in the GP-100 Smooth as silk out of box. Oooops forgot 4" SS GP-100

OK gots to go

Buffalo,

Welcome to the forum. Not exactly sure what "perfect" load means to you. One of the most accurate bullets I've found is a 158gr lead semi-wad cutter. Obviously that's not a multi-purpose projectile, but one of the best for making holes in paper.

I've recently had fun with some odd powders like Winchester Autocomp and IMR Trailboss. Cheers.

Mine is a 4" s/s that I purchased in 2001 new. I also bought an HKS Speed Loader and a Galco Phoenix holster which it still rides in.

When I carry it in the woods it's loaded with Buffalo Bore 180gr. LFN-GC. At home it's filled with Buffalo Bore +P .38 spl. 158gr. LSWHC-GC.

Got 3" stainless.. Great gun.. Had to install Power Custom cylinder shims to restore cylinder gap out to .004. Cylinder would stick after every fired round. Also polished internals with a dremel ,felt wheel, and polish per the instructions from the Ruger book of knowledge. Replaced trigger return spring with spring from super redhawk 454 to speed it up a bit. Best thing about it is it shoots to point of aim.. no left or right.. just up and down. More than I can say for my vaquero. Favorite backpackin loads are with 180gr Horn XTPs. It is enough gun for anything you will find hiking around in southern California. Here is a pic with the shims next to it.

I did my research for a LONG time before selecting my Ruger GP100 with six inch barrel.

I have ordered a set of rosewood Hogue grips; but they have not yet arrived.

I swapped out the black ramp front sight with the ruger red ramp front sight. I find this to be a considerable improvement. What a great piece that allows the user to do this so easily! Incidentally, when I swapped out the front sights it did not alter my sight zeroing one iota.

Here is the piece just home from the gunshop:

_DSC3792.jpg

1) What do you own: Stainless GP100, 4", adjustable sight.

2) What grips do you use? Checkered Rosewood Combat Grips from Eagle

3) What loads do you use? for plinking, i use bulk .38 reloads. For home defense, I use Gold Dots, and for backwoods carry I use Corbon 200grn HC.

4) Any modifications? Just the grips.

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100? I would like a high visibility colored front sight, and a rounded trigger.

6) Holster(s): I've tried quite a few, and my favorite is the Galco Fletch. It distributes the weight well, and after an 8 hour shift wearing this gun that can mean quite a lot.

7) Speed Loader(s): I have two HKS speedloaders, but I don't really use them. I can reload faster with loose cartridges, so I carry my spares in a Simply Rugged ammo pouch.

now, for a picture and some history:

DSCF0573.jpg

The GP100 was my first handgun purchased as an adult. I was fresh out of the service and looking to take up shooting again, and to have something for home defense. My dad suggested looking for a used Model 10, since there's a store a couple hours away that often gets big lots of them from law enforcement and security company trade-ins. I had already planned on getting a double action revolver in either .38 or .357, but I wasn't exactly sure on make or model.

I happened to stop by a local store, and this big shiny revolver caught my eye. It felt great in my hand, nice and heavy. I bought it then and there without haggling price. It's been true love ever since.

Great looking gun. Love the grips.

I would like to see a GP100 in 45 ACP and maybe a .22 also bring back the old grips.......the new ones are awful! - gene

Let's bump the club back to the front page.
Any one ever have trigger work done? or should I just keep dry firing to smooth it out?

I have found that after a fair amount of firing and dry-firing, and a little lube around the trigger and hammer, my GP100 (stock trigger) is all I can ask for.

I particularly like the snap that you get on double action just prior to the hammer dropping. I find that if I fire from this position the GP100 is dead-on easy to fire and accurate on double action.
