Are there any issues regarding the slot where the flag on the unmodified lock protrudes? I thought I once read that there were problems when the lock mechanism was removed without replacing them with a dummy part of some sort.

The frame is slightly relieved for the flag. There are no mechanical issues as a result, but when you look at the opening for the hammer spur, you will see the relief cut for the flag. It is an aesthetic concern, as is the hole.

I always wondered if there was a way to fill both the hole and the slot with one piece. I've never personally seen one disassembled.

Do y’all think there is any hope of S&W ever re-releasing the Mdl 36 w/o the internal lock ? I don’t mind the MIM parts, nor the frame mounted firing pin; but I dislike the confounded internal lock. Or of S&W possibly re-releasing the original Centennial (Mdl 42, I think) ? I hate S&W’s numbering system.
I'm yet to see a current production exposed hammer S&W without the lock. They made some internal hammer models without the lock: 640 Pro, 642, 442. I'm sure some years ago they also reissued the all steel Model 40 Centennial without the lock but with the safety grip.
