Seeing as I'm researching .308/7.62 semi auto rifles, I figure I should find out what brand magazines are the best for a couple different rifles.

My options that are on the table are a National Match/Super Match M1A, DSArms FAL, PTR-91 or an AR-10 type rifle set up in a sniper/tactical style.

I already know what magazines I would get for the FAL and the PTR-91 as both rifles have an easy to get supply of magazines at good prices.

My question involves the AR and the M1A. I've seen some magazines for both go for upwards of $50 a piece. I'd rather not have to pay that much for a magazine as I want to have a decent number of them on hand.

For capacity I decided that the 20 round mags are what I'd like to have and I'd rather avoid plastic magazines as I don't yet trust them. (I know a lot of you are big fans of the polymer magazines and you think it's ignorant or old fashioned to use steel/aluminum but that's what I want.)

Are there any aftermarket brand magazines for either one of these rifles that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and is reliable enough to trust to work when it's needed?

Let me know what you know/think about the different brands.

Stick with Military issue mags or with companies that make them for the military......They work the best, and tend to be the best quality.....

G3 mags are still dirt cheap.

FAL mags are not. They are much more expensive and scarce than just two years ago. Figure $20/mag for excellent to new condition. Only a handful of places selling them right now.

M1A mags - get USGI CMI brand mags from 44mag.com for 20.49 each. Best quality mag, best deal, hands down. The Korean mags are fine but are not enough cheaper to be worth the question about quality. Taiwan Type 57 mags are also OK but again only slightly cheaper for somewhat lower quality.

Armalite, Inc. type AR-10 mags: $30 or so each from Armalite in 5 or 10 packs. Palmetto State Armory has or had them around $20 each last week. By far the lowest price I've seen on them.

DPMS/Knights/original AR10 pattern mags: Magpul Pmags for $19 each, C-Products stainless mags can be found as low as $15, or DPMS mags for about $28-30 each.

Buy whichever rifle you want, mags are currently available for all of them at around the same price.

At the risk of sounding redundant, CMI mags for the M1A. I had an issue with one, and CMI jumped to make sure that it was corrected and functioned flawlessly. And, as it turned out, the issue was the loose nut behind the stock!

If you prefer aluminum for the AR use NHMTG. I bought some on sale for $10 a piece. Check 44mag as they have them for $12.99 each for the twenties currently.

Does this have something to do with .308 rifle platforms like the OP asked about?
