Shooting out the barrel of a 10/22

I've shot out a 10/22 barrel...

I bought my 10/22 used about 10 years ago. It was WELL used. I know I put at least 30,000 rounds through it since then. I would regularly take a brick of ammo from wally world and shoot it in one sitting. I would do this at least three times a week.... sometimes 6 or 7 times.

I was cleaning it one day and I found a 3" spot in the barrel where there was no resistance when pushing the patch or brush through. I asked around and everybody said I shot out the barrel. It was still extremely accurate, but I didn't like the idea of the smooth section in the barrel.

I bought another used barrel from a gun show for $10. It is still as accurate as it ever was.

ETA: I only use copper jacketed ammo. No LRN for me!!

Anyone who thinks that shooting a prairie dog is any more noble is just freakin ignorant!!!

i agree, at least prarie dogs are cute :D

i guess there are a few people on here that beleve they can say what is a varmit and what is not a varmit. :barf:

YES, xd45gaper, the one I never ever clean at all is a single shot bolt action... but then there are a few Remington Nylon guns around here that ain't never ever been cleaned, and they NEVER malfunction! Though I DO clean the actions on my 10/22's, I NEVER clean the barrels... matter of fact, the ONLY .22 that I have CURRENTLY that get the barrel cleaned are my .22 Hornets... (jacketed non-lead bullets, dontcha know)

NOW, go to my poll on the .22-250, and vote, in a little while, I'll have a SECOND .22 centerfire to clean!

The turtles you are killing are sinking to the bottom of the pond, rotting, and releasing methane and other green house gasses. Al Gore is on his way to your house right now to collect your global warming causing 10/22 so you won't have to worry about the barrel any longer. Personally, I thank you for your efforts to make my PA home oceanfront property. As they say at the Univ of MD- "Fear the turtle".

I wish I had your job. :D

10/22 well minus the barrel band i broke about 8 years ago lol
Just curious. How did you brake the barrel band?
Had a 10/22 years aggo. I bought it very used. Could't hit ship with it.
I thought the rifling might be bad...Sound like that wasn't the problem.
I heard years aggo thet the barrel band can affect accuracey on 10/22s.
Don't know if its true.

By the way...I hope your not near west chester Pa. A turtle is the college mascot. hope you didn't get em

i dropped it on the concrete in my garage one morning before going to check my traps! i beleve i had a cheap sling on it and as i was walking out the nylon slipped form the buckle and bang there went the barrell band. it was made of cheap pot metal anyways.

i would assume that the barrell band would affect the accuracy once you got your rifle heated up mine shoots well with out it although i do put thread lock on the main take down bolt just to keep it tight all the time and keep the whole assymbly from moving around in the stock. (it is a mass produced firearm lol)

I have a 10/22 that my Dad bought for me in November 1973. It is still going strong and must be approaching 100k rounds through it. I should have stock in .22 ammo companies with all the ammo that I’ve used over the years. BTW it is still using the original barrel!

well, you answered your own question. To 'burn ' a bbl out, you need heat, and lots of it. I don't see how ever anyone could burn out a 22 bbl, those littles carts just don't generate enough heat for the job.

lol.I know someone who has one in his garage that has never been shot out and he's had that thing for as long as I can remember. The receiver's all beat up from riding on his tractor during hay season.Id say its had at least 200k rounds put through it because everyone that goes over there, that happens to see a groundhog, gets that old gun out.Its been that way for many years.

..and he never cleans it and it still works. Its an abomination to my eyes to even look at it.

10/22 from mid-60s

My dad bought me a USED 10/22 in the mid 60s. It's in the 8500 serial number range. It shot OK a a kids gun, but I wasn't experienced enough to evaluate the accuracy. I liked it.

I swapped the trigger group parts for Volquartzens three years ago, changed the barrel to a Titan competition and the stock to a Hogue overmoulded. I also scoped it with a BSA Platinum 8X32 to set it up for Metallic Silhouette shooting and so I could use it as kid gun at the range and not have to give up a spotting scope.

Works well. It would be a heck of a turtle gun. It shoots about 1 1/2 MOA at 100 yards with Wolf Match Target .22 LR.

1022 Barrels

XDGaper, First in regards to turtle shooting i used to shoot all of them i could in the stock ponds down in Texas. They can devastate the fish population (small fry) and are considered a nuisance. I no longer live in that area and do not hunt anything i do not really intend to eat. Here in southeastern Washington State we have coyote problems. Many people hunt them and have yet to put a dent in their population. Regarding the 1022 you have if you want to replace the barrel Clark Custom Guns sells a nice factory taper barrel which you do not have to inlet the stock or any modifications. I would check into that if i were you . As far as actually shooting out a 22 rimfire barrel i have heard quotes by target shooters that they never clean their 22 barrels but may run a chamber brush in to clean the chamber. I would agree with many on this forum that most barrels are ruined by cleaning them improperly. Also i want to add that i shoot a TC Classic 22 long rifle which can hold an 1 1/2 group at 100 yards and rag out a hole at 50 yards. It is a stock rifle . This is not done with bulk or run of the mill ammo. I shoot Eley Club with the orange colored lid. CCI Standard velocity also comes very close to yielding the same results. If you look around all of the target ammo that i have seen has unplated bullets. They are lead with a coating on them. Plated bullets are swaged undersize from what i have read in order to plate them but most of them vary in size and shoot inconsistent at extended ranges. I would try to good ammo in the gun if i were you and also check that the barrel band you installed is sitting correctly. Perhaps dropping the gun caused a shift in where the barrel sits in the wood channel. Good shooting and appreciate all the good comments.

Question...

If you put a BULL barrel on the gun, then it won't shoot turtles any more, only bulls, right? Or is it for "shooting the bull"? I think you should try to find a turtle barrel, or a bottle barrel, maybe a paper target barrel. No wait..a "fish barrel" barrel, from what I hear that's as easy as... :neener:

oh my barrel band is LONG gone! lol i used to have problems with the main take down screw backing out ever so slightly with use and that would cause the whole action/barrel to shift if you pushed on it but i started using threadlock on it and havent had a problem since!

I tried a box of Federal Match with it and was truly impressed with the accuracy out to 50 yards. 100 yards was a diffrent story with iron sights!
it still blows my mind about all these target shooters that NEVER clean there guns and have no problem with accuracy! maybe im just imagining things when im shooting paper and after a couple hundred rounds it doesnt seem quite as acurate.

im still kicking around upgrading to a bull barrel. i think if i do any upgrades it will defently be to the trigger group (even though i beleve its WELL broke in now and is prolly actually match grade lol) I do want to get the little thing that locks the bolt back after the last shot though i always find it annoying if i dont count rounds and get the dry fire!

I agree with you on the turtles also! im orginally from KS and we used to ALWAYS shoot turtles off ponds. not only helps out the fish in your bass ponds it also makes you a good shot! you really have to be on point to hit those little suckers when all thats sticking out of the water is there tiny head! lol Its hard to become a proficent shot by ALWAYS shooting at the bench same angle EVERY TIME. shooting offhand and differnt angles, distances and on un level ground is what makes you a good shot ;) why do you think all the farm boys are normally the best marksmen in the military :D

xd45gaper

I happened to notice in the most recent discount booklet from Midway USA they have a fluted bull barrel and adjustable stock combo for $175-ish. Since I don't own a 10/22 any longer and don't follow the aftermarket products too well both items may be less than desirable but the price sure seemed reasonable.

Best,

S-
