Ever since I got the CMP Catalog I've been thinking about getting a M1 Garand. I can get a pristine condition refurbished one for $995..........What do you think? I dont actually need one since I've already got a M1A, but I like those Garands--I used to drill with one back when I was a ROTC....Do you think $995 is an OK price. Should I do it you think?

Eventually these Garands are going to dissapear like the M1 Carbine, don't you think?

Ideas? Thoughts?

Which is a better rifle, the M1A or the M1 Garand?

thats a bit expensive. if you really want the collector grade status, then by all means go for it.

i love the history of the rifle, but i also love shooting it. i bought a service grade for much less than 1000 bucks, and its a VERY nice rifle. i used the savings to buy ammo from the cmp.

rod, I bought one a few years back. Oddly enough, Ive only fired it once or twice. But it's certainly a piece of history. For me it's sort of like an investment. It may not appreciate much if any, but it certainly holds its value more than just about anything else going. I think of others who sink their money into, say, electronic equipment that will be worth 20 cents on the dollar four years later. My hobby expenditures certainly beat that.

I have one of the CMP Special Grades to which you refer. The extra dollars relative to the Service Grade ($625) get you new wood, a new barrel and a refinish. The Service Grade Special ($950) has collector grade metal and a new stock.

Personally, I think the CMP Special Grade is a pretty good deal for the price. The refinished parts might be a little less sharp-edged than the metal on the Service Grade Specials, but I've made a handful of trips to the North Store and finding a CMP Special Grade with really nice metal has never been problem. It is probably the LEAST collectible of the various grades, given the new wood and barrel and mixed manuf. parts, but if you want a solid shooter with a new barrel, wood and new finished metal, it's a great rifle. True Collector Grades are pretty uncommon, and Correct Grades are now $1150 and available only in HRA manuf. If you have a chance to visit a CMP store, you can find some Correct Grades in truly amazing shape.

My son considers this rifle his most prized possession (RM1SASSP M1 Garand, Service Grade Springfield Special. Allow 30-60 days for delivery.
SA collector grade metal in excellent almost new condition. Walnut stocks and handguards and associated hardware are new manufacture. NOT original SA manufacture.
$950 Effective 1-3-2012. S&H $24.95 per rifle.):

and I agree with him.

Not trying to start a run on Garands here, but if you want one, now is the time. Here is a copy of part of an email I just sent my boss a day or two ago on the subject:

"BTW, I don't know if you saw this in the <CMP's> Ask Orest forum, but Orest posted this a couple days ago regarding being sold out of Springfield Correct grades:

"We have sold out. As we go through and inspect rifles we have in inventory we may find more. If we do, we will accumulate them until we have a few hundred and then put them up for sale again. Over the past few months we have found very few.

Less than 100 HRA correct remaining and then they will be listed as sold out. Same story - the rifles we are now working are not grading out as correct.

Best guess is that in a few months, all the Service grade specials will also be gone."

I am with Bergmen. I think the Springfield Service Grade Special is the best Garand deal going. The post war production quality that I have seen looks great and the guns are essentially brand new. Admittedly I have not handled that many, but I found the SA SGSs that I have handled had cleaner triggers, better fitting op-rods in the recievers, and better indexed barrels compared to the HRA SGSs.

I have not been too impressed with the Specials (I have owned my share) when compared to the Service Grade Specials. Some of the parts can be just old and worn, refinished yes, but worn none-the-less. Particularly the rear sight elevation pinion and the reciever ear serrations for the rear sight. While again, the Service Grade Special is essentially a brand new gun (albiet with CMP repro walnut stock).

I think $975 delivered for a M1 Garand SGS is about the best deal going in firearms today. I wouldn't even share this info except I already put in my order for one over a week ago, so I am not too worried about them drying up before I get mine.

I unfortunately can't purchase one for another two or three months since funds are short and I am not apart of a qualified organization. I am however shipping out to the military in early May (Which qualifies as a CMP affiliated organization) and hope to buy one after basic training and ship it home. Do you think they will run out of correct grade by then?

Heck, I'm more than satisfied with my $495 Field Grade I bought in 2010. Wood has...character, and I like that.

Be aware, if you get one there is a responsibility to let the younger generation put a clip through it, even if they are total strangers.

I own several and wouldn't buy an M1 anywhere else. Take one out of a case at the range, and at least one guy will come over and check it out. Every time.

Does being a veteran qualify me for purchase? Or would I need to re-join the NRA or some other shooting/gun owner's right org.?

;) i may be the the exception but inreally like shooting mine. I have a field grade hra and benched it at 2.5" at 100 for an 8 round clip! I very rarely shoot it off the bench now that i have the sights dialed in but it is alot of fun for posistion shooting and blasting!

Yes! Immediately!

Last year I got a beautiful Springfield Special from the CMP.
I was willing to pay the price since I couldn't hand-pick my own rifle. It is BEAUTIFUL.

Last summer I swung by the North Store and fondled 2 service grade Garands that I really lusted after. I left without them, and regret it to this day. I shall return!

Be sure to order ammo from the CMP too.

PS, I also have an M1A. All the more reason you should add a Garand to your collection.

Good luck and have fun.

I have purchased two Garands from the CMP and my most recent one was a Collector Grade M1 made by SA. This M1 was perfect in all ways, including nice original walnut with the proper cartouches, excellent metal finish, and a pristine properly dated barrel that just happened to be marked NM. After having said all that, any one who desires an M1 Garand, can't buy anything better than purchasing one through the CMP organization. Also consider if you live anywhere near Camp Perry, Ohio or Anniston, Al, you may purchase your's in person. In case you're wondering, my Collector Grade M1 Garand was NOT refinished. :)

YES...........I have bought three over the years, a collector grade H&R, a select grade Springfield, made the same month and year I was born, and a M1D which is like new......best money I ever spent. When they are gone from the CMP, the value will go up. Besides, they are FUN to shoot.....chris3
