So this can be manipulated with 1 hand? I doubt it. If being attacked by a animal, you're going to drop the leash so your dog you love can be mauled by said animal? I'll take my CCW over this and the magpul version any day of the week, while keeping my doggie from being eaten or killed.

If it comes down to either me or my Dog, sorry Bowser, I come first, so yeah, drop the dang leash.... Dont like the idea, dont buy it, Dont like the show, dont watch it...

A lot of what they do on the show seems like it would be illegal to use these guns outside of private property or a shooting range.

I don't think you can just go for a walk with the dog in public or even use a class 3 weapon for hunting in most states.

There's no genius residing in one more schmuck with a camera crew behind him. Are the Teutuls really geniuses or did they actually reach their wealth and stardom primarily on the backs of the networks? Think about it.

What would be the sense in making one more reality show?? It would be better television if all of the reality shows went away and script writers actually had to use their brains for a change.

Oh I get it ... if we're not being dumbed down enough then we should dummy up, right? If not "down" then "up". ;) I get it. I don't follow it, but I get it.

I'm all for making more original 30 minute sitcoms or 60 minute shows. This reality type garbage is just what it is "garbage". I mean right from the get-go in the introduction of "Sons of Guns", the owner or whoever says, "Don't try this at home." What do you mean don't try this at home?! It's shooting guns and it looks like fun! Why shouldn't I try this at home if I have enough space and can do it safely?

EVERY STINKIN' WHERE I turn on the channels it's either #1 another reality show being forced down our pipes #2 the news the Government Media Complex thinks we're entitled to #3 MTV and VH1 shows which really aren't music at all and #4 QVC/home shopping channels.

Glad to see that my $108/month cable payment is going to nothing but "the highest quality service" available.

I concur with your thoughtful post.

OK, you guys who have all the answers.

Why don't you create and produce a show that:

1. Shows custom builds on bolt-action rifles or 1911's.

2. Explains the laws every week (especially 922r)

3. If they happen to venture into NFA territory, make sure they explain those laws every week also.

4. See what kind of ratings you get

5. See how long it lasts.

This post is right on the money. The show is designed to bring in the largest audience possible, to get advertising dollars. That's it. If they had a gunsmith in the back room snorting coke off a hookers ass, that would probably bring in even more viewers. Making a show that is interesting to THR members, would be so boring, the whole thing would be a complete waste of money and time. Spouting off gun law and procedures is a complete waste of time for everyone. You already know it, so what's the point of that, other than allowing you an opportunity for mental masterbation as you validate your own knowlege ?....and those that don't know it, could give a rat's ass about it. Lose/Lose on that one.

And how 'bout "Overhaulin"? Anyone here want to step out on a limb and claim Chip Foose doesn't know how to build a car, because the producers make up the corny "stolen car" BS?

Ok, I admit it, I watch the show (but I skip through the obnoxious yammering, so it only takes me about 5 minutes per episode). Did anyone else notice that their introduction of the MG42 actually showed an MG34?

Really, the new guy building the 42 was the most impressive thing I've seen to date - assuming he actually had the skill to reweld the chopped receiver, and didn't just buy a newly made one. And it would have been more impressive if he'd built it as a semi (for a full auto one, the parts just drop right in once you have the receiver - a semi requires a lot more careful work). But still, nice to see.

Have you seen the "Ax Men" episode where the crazy swamp logger (yes the one with the duct taped BFR), who runs his own camper over with all of his guns and chainsaws inside, invites his friend to come out with him and try out his new swamp buggy? The friend throws the crazy a loaded pistol grip Mossberg from the dock to the boat; the crazy proceeds to wildly fire the gun into the water at the dock, flailing around like a cracked up monkey, pointing it at his friend and the camera guy, swings to the other side of the boat and fires the remaining rounds. All the while screaming, "yahoo!"

Slamming on Red Jacket turns into slamming Shelby? I believe most people are able to tell the difference between reality and what "TV Reality" really is. Truckers can watch "Ice Road Truckers" or the even less realistic "IRT-World's Worst Roads" and pick them apart forever, but we know a lot of stuff is added to provide drama. Perhaps the lamest concept I saw on there was how "explosive" Jet Fuel is. Having hauled fuel in the past, I feel a lot safer hauling a highly refined kerosene than I do hauling gasoline. And I'd much rather haul a load of gasoline than an empty gas tanker, the fumes are the explosive item.

Do you watch "Survivor" and actually believe they're out there all alone? That they are expected to live on minimal amounts of food and water?

I said it elsewhere, I'll say it again here. The look of sheer satisfaction on the MOH WW-II vet when he fired up that flame thrower, or the look of "I'm back" on the face of the young vet they built a ATV mounted shotgun, so he could hunt again, makes up for any amount of BS the producers put into this show.

So they act like rednecks, what exactly is wrong with that? I'd say they'd wear that badge proudly, as do I. Foxworthy describes the word "redneck" as "a glorious lack of sophistication." That ain't all that bad.

Glen/Flem built his own personal semi-auto MG-42 several months earlier. If you can build a semi 42, a post sample is no problem. He is the Tig welder of the group.

if that magpul knockoff had a waterproof solar powered GPS and an emergency thanksgiving turkey dinner in it, you'd have something negative to say about it haha...

First, i hope people really don't think im pissed off about this show. More in shock if anything. I also work in the film industry and know how editing works and catch a whole lot of BS going on behind the scenes that im sure not even Will had any idea they were doing.

The difference is that i would actually like to own the Magpul version because they aren't trying to sell it as some BS "Survival" tool... not to mention the Magpul is at least based off of a very reliable firearm opposed to their VCR looking hunk of steel.

I think it annoys me because they took Magpul's work and engineering and built it in a week and did a piss poor job doing it and claiming it was their new idea.

Im not mad these guys are making money, they found a nitch and exploited it. I would of done the same thing! It would just be nice if credit was given where credit is due and call it for what it really is.... a cool toy and NOT a survival tool.

a .22 that fits into the butt stock is a survival tool. This is just a toy just like the Magpul version.

What annoys me is that watching the whole season of this show, it IMO portrays guns and owners poorly. They make it look as if anyone can buy a full auto or short barreled gun. It would of been fantastic if they just introduced SOME LAWS that would show the generic non-gun person how ridiculous the laws are. I just saw such promise and a grandstand that could really of made a difference and help the firearms community in a whole and they totally missed it.

Jeez guys.....would you please stop comparing the SOG gun to the "original" Magpul gun? Magpul ripped it off from the Russian PP90. Why didn't you attack their ass when they copied the Russian gun? And that is not even the only fold up SMG that came out before the Magpul unit. There have been others as well. Magpul was far from "first".

I guess what really gets me about the show isn't Red Jacket at all - everything I've seen of there's off the show has looked really great. It's the attitude of whoever is putting the show together that they have to ignore everything technical and hype up (or flat out invent) any negative aspect of everyone's personality. That they have to put an artificial deadline on everything, and pretend to get all stressed out over meeting them. That they have to dumb the whole thing down to appeal to the lowest common Jersey Shore denominator.

When we start posting build videos at Forgotten Weapons (hopefully within the next year), there's going to be none of that. We're going to specifically focus on the technical aspects of our work, and just revel in the fact that we have the opportunity to be building really cool guns. Our shop is much better equipped than what they show of Red Jacket's, and we'll be doing a heck of a lot more work from scratch, or close to it. Now THAT will be gunbuilding TV worth watching, you'll just have to watch it on YouTube instead of cable.

First, let me admit that I am not a NFA expert, nor do I play one on television. I watch TV to be entertained. I don't believe everything I see and hear on TV. Check the channel guide to see what else is on at the same time as SOG. I think it's far from the worst choice to a person could make. I enjoy the show, but I don't use it for a machine gun reference guide any more than I use Man vs Food as a guide for nutrition.

I think it annoys me because they took Magpul's work and engineering and built it in a week and did a piss poor job doing it and claiming it was their new idea.

Just to be clear, the Magpul design (based on the Russian design, which was based on an American design) is a polymer gun which required many hundreds of thousands of dollars to develop in CAD work, mold-flow analysis, and the making of the injection molding tooling. The Red Jacket "thing" was likely a response to the producer saying "make something cool" and they got their welders out.

One thing I don't get about Fleming's MG42 build is that it would require good welding skills. In the show he admits he can't weld very well and has problems with some basic tasks (they say he's TIG welding but it looks like MIG to me).

Anyway, it all gets down to the fact that it is TV. I'm pretty convinced they have a huge trashcan full of scrap metal and when it is time to film the shop scenes everyone grabs a piece and starts grinding on it with a Dremel.

As many of us can attest, Red Jacket has done quality work for us in the past and it sure doesn't look like what they show on TV.

Somebody came to Will and made him an offer he can't refuse. If someone wanted to come into my life and pay me obscene money to film my days, while asking me to pose doing some silly things, I'd be right there.

I watch the show from time to time and one thing that strikes me is the customers. For example, the episode with the dual watercooled M16's. Supposedly this was for the....Navy? As I'm sure anyone who has served understands you don't just go out and issue an inquiry for a new weapons system. There are so many things wrong with that scenario.

1. The guy in cammies was supposedly a Colonel but they other guy kept referring to him as "LT".
2. Guy in cammies had no rank insignia, name or service patches. (nor were there any telltale signs they were ever there)
3. The boat they were using looked like somebodys duck boat from the back shed.

Nevermind the fact they Navy has access to all the weapon systems they need and would never purchase a new system that has been through zero qualification trials. Frankly those guys looked more "militia" to me. Then there was the episode with the Browning .30 cal. I'm sorry, but am I the only one who thinks that was total BS? How on earth would you be able to afford that on a cop salary? I can only guess at what a transferable .30 would cost.

As I'm sure anyone who has served understands you don't just go out and issue an inquiry for a new weapons system. There are so many things wrong with that scenario.

You don't even have to be a veteran to understand that. Anyone who has worked for the government understands putting out bids etc. etc.

After reading all of this I have come to the conclusion that watching Sons of Guns can be like dating or fishing. If you’re not getting the results you want you may need to lower your standards and fish on the bottom. Ya see, you’re expecting it to be like Ohio Ordinance Works. You want to see them machine out a 1918 BAR receiver, put it together with a parts kit, make it work AND look beautiful. What you have in reality is Troy Landry from Swamp People working with Shelby the swamp logger from Ax Men wielding a hacksaw and dremel tool on a sewer pipe to re-invent an existing product into a piece of junk while yelling “Weeee Haaaaa Choot ‘Em, Choot ‘Em”.
And we wonder why we rubber neck at accident scenes…….

So they act like rednecks, what exactly is wrong with that?

They are reinforcing the image of gun owners that the antis love to portray in cartoons on the editorial page. THAT is what's wrong with it. How many threads here back in the days when we still allowed political discussion do you think there were whenever the Washington Post, New York Times and USA Today published a cartoon by Olyphant or one of the other ant gun cartoonists portraying the NRA as overweight, bumpkins with a half dozen teeth in their heads braying about gun rights do you think you'd find if you searched the archives here and at TFL? I can guarantee you that there certainly wasn't any support for that portrayal of the gun culture in those threads.

This show is 1000 times worse for our cause then all of those editorial cartoons put together. Millions more people who know nothing about guns, shooting and the gun culture are exposed to this portrayal of all of us then ever paid attention to the cartoons on the editorial page.

They hype, the dramatics, the blatant unsafe acts are giving the non-shooting public who watch the show a completely skewed view of the gun culture.

As far as I am concerned Discovery Channel can trash some other activity to sell advertising and leave the gun culture alone! We are not doing ourselves any favors by supporting this show.

The fight to secure our second amendment rights is not over by a long shot. We have many battles yet to fight and do we ant the non-gun owning public whose support we are going to need to keep our second amendment rights to have this show as their example of what we are all about?

Man, it's like listening to a bunch of women. If you don't like the show then don't watch it. Simple as that. Don't watch it just so you have something to complain about. There's 100 threads in this forum that are legit questions asked by people who want your opinions and expertise, and the Sons of Guns hate thread is one of the biggest I've seen so far here. I don't like jersey shore, so guess what, I don't watch it. I bet you haters have seen every episode huh?

And the issue with gun rights isn't how they are portrayed, it's how the stupidity is a stronger force than those of us fighting for gun rights.

This has been exactly my point for several pages in this thread - only done much better than I could put it.

I wonder what reaction the owner of Red Jacket has received at other forums and what his response has been? It seems to me, he should have an influence on the portrayal the show makes.

Exactly Jeff! Note that there isn't a whole lot of controversy about the Outdoor Channel shows. They are realistic and common sense.

You don't see Pincus going into a room and firing off a string of blanks as a laugh.

I also brought up the point that the acquisiton processes and buyers look a touch off. How many ships are now sailing off Somalia with that rocket launcher?

Remember Tales of the Gun? That was a neat show to watch with techy details of many firearms.

I don't hate it, I just think they could do more with it
If they at least spent 5 minutes each episode to explain how areas with ccw permit holders have seen a decrease in crime since citizens started carrying firearms. Or something the least bit helpfull to the gun culture. I know that isn't exiting, but just one or two sentences each week. Or a story while they were working about an old person who was able to fend off an attack , or a robbery, rape, etc, because they had their firearm.
It would be better for everyone. I know it isn't what their demo is after, but throwing a positive message out there now that you have the platform isn't going to change the show, just help the image of gun owners who watch the thing.
Someone may say, wow I never knew that, maybe we should get one I never realized that crime would go down, instead of up like they been telling us.
I don't hate the show, it just could be done better, and it wouldn't take anything away from the format they seem to want to persue.
I think it's silly, overdone, and many more adjectives, but that is just my opinion, if you like it then it's good, I like "Justified", another silly show, but entertaining. Plus he gets to shoot the bad guys. If your going to make stuff up, may as well do it jackass style, like Johnny Knoxville. Strap a rocket to someones butt and throw 8 m4's on it and a set of water skiis, now I would watch that. It is what it is.

I wonder what reaction the owner of Red Jacket has received at other forums and what his response has been?
Since you are a self-proclaimed 'forum junkie' I figure you could answer that?

I know earlier in the thread I posted that Will said his emails have been 95% positive.

Of course, this may be like on 'gun rights' issues: only a few actually write letters to their Representatives. The rest go on forums to whine and moan...

Did anyone get a final count for how many muzzle sweeps we saw this season?
